Srinagar, July 21 (NVI): The Meteorological Department on Tuesday said moderate to heavy rainfall is continuing across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir and warned that the prevailing weather activity is likely to persist for the next three to five hours, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides and shooting stones in vulnerable areas.
Director of the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said moderate rain is being recorded at many places, while isolated heavy to intense showers have been reported from parts of Budgam, Kupwara, Baramulla, Ganderbal, south Kashmir and the Chenab Valley.
He said the ongoing spell of rain and thundershowers is expected to continue over many areas during the next three to five hours, with brief spells of intense rainfall likely at a few locations.
According to the MeT Department, heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms over north-west and central Kashmir, the Pir Panjal range, the Chenab Valley and the Jammu plains could trigger localized flash floods, mudslides and landslides.
The department also warned of shooting stones and rockfalls at vulnerable locations in hilly districts.
People have been advised to stay away from nallahs, streams and landslide-prone areas and to follow advisories issued by the authorities until the weather improves, the MeT Department said.(NVI)
