Chill is back : Srinagar freezes at -5.1°C as Drass records -22.4°C

Srinagar, Jan 12(NVI): Srinagar recorded a freezing -5.1°C today, continuing its spell of icy cold nights, while Drass in Ladakh, often referred to as the “coldest inhabited place in India,” plunged to an extreme -22.4°C.

The cold wave persists across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, with several places experiencing sub-zero temperatures.

In the Kashmir Valley, Sonamarg was the coldest at -9.8°C, followed closely by Larnoo (-8.8°C) and Pahalgam (-8.4°C). Popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Qazigund also shivered at -6.5°C and -6.4°C, respectively. Other districts, including Anantnag (-6.2°C), Pulwama (-5.3°C), and Shopian (-8.3°C), faced equally biting cold.

In the Jammu region, relatively milder conditions prevailed, with Jammu city recording 7.2°C. However, places like Banihal (-0.6°C) and Bhaderwah (-0.4°C) faced near-freezing temperatures. Padder in Kishtwar district stood out with a frigid -8.0°C, highlighting the stark contrasts within the region.

Ladakh remains the coldest region overall, with Kargil dropping to -12.7°C and Leh recording -9.0°C. The extreme cold weather is affecting daily life and travel, emphasizing the need for precautions during this severe winter spell.

As temperatures continue to plummet, residents brace for the challenges of harsh winter conditions, while the scenic beauty of snow-clad landscapes attracts tourists to these icy destinations (News Vibes of India)
