Srinagar, Dec 24(NVI):The Kashmir Valley is reeling under a severe cold wave with temperatures plummeting to sub-zero levels across the region.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a bone-chilling low of -6.6°C, marking one of the coldest nights of the season.
Shopian emerged as the coldest place in the valley, with the mercury dipping to -8.8°C, followed closely by Pulwama and Sonamarg at -8.5°C. Zojila Pass recorded an extreme low of -23.0°C, reflecting the harsh conditions in the high-altitude areas.
Other parts of the valley also witnessed freezing temperatures, including Pahalgam (-7.8°C), Khudwani (-7.1°C), and Anantnag (-8.3°C). Meanwhile, towns like Baramulla (-6.0°C) and Budgam (-7.0°C) continued to shiver under icy conditions.
In Jammu region, the plains remained comparatively warmer, with Jammu city recording 7.6°C. However, higher reaches like Padder (-5.7°C) and Banihal (-2.0°C) reported significantly lower temperatures.
Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of -9.2°C, while Kargil and other parts of the region remained equally frigid.
The ongoing cold wave has intensified frost formation, disrupted water supply due to frozen pipes and affected daily life across the Kashmir. Locals brace for further dips as the harshest winter period, locally known as the “Chillai Kalan” has tightened its grip over Kashmir from December 21 ( News Vibes of India)
