Coronavirus cases surge past 53.8 mn globally; death toll mounts to 1.3 mn

New Delhi (NVI): More than 53.8 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, with over 13,10,400 deaths reported, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.

Over 36 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

In the US, the total number of coronavirus cases have reached more than 10.8 million. The total number of fatalities have surpassed 2,45,570 in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases has surpassed 5.84 million, while the country accounts for the second highest number of fatalities at 1,65,658.

The health ministry of Mexico reported 5,860 new cases of coronavirus and 635 more deaths, bringing the tally to 10,03,253 and the official death toll to 98,259.

France the fourth worst-affected country registered 32,095 fresh infections to push the tally to 1,9,15,713. Deaths in hospitals rose by 359 in the past 24 hours to reach a total of 44,600 so far.

Meanwhile, Austria will enter a second national lockdown on Tuesday for at least two and a half weeks, after its target infection rate of COVID-19 exploded to 10 times higher than expected.

Apart from this, North Dakota became the 35th state of US to require face masks be worn in public mandatory, while Virginia announced new curbs starting from Sunday.
