PM unveils 'Statue of Peace' in Raj

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today unveiled the ‘Statue of Peace’ in Rajasthan’s Pali district via video-conferencing to mark the 151st birth anniversary celebrations of Jain monk Acharya Shree Vijay Vallabh Surishwer Ji Maharaj.

The 151-inch-tall statue, made of “ashtadhatu” (eight metals with copper being the major constituent) was installed at the Vijay Vallabh Sadhana Kendra, Jetpura, in Rajasthan’s Pali.

“India has always shown the path of peace, non-violence and fraternity to the whole world. The world gets inspiration for these ideals from India. Today, the world is once again looking at India for this guidance,” he said.

While paying tributes to the Jain monk, PM Modi said Acharya Vijay Vallabh started the campaign of making India self-reliant in the field of education.

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the death of seven people in a road accident in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district in wee hours today.

“News of a road accident in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi has caused immense grief. Govt is involved in relief and rescue operations. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the dead,” PMO tweeted in Hindi, quoting PM Modi.

Reportedly, at least seven people were killed and one suffered serious injuries after a vehicle fell down from a bridge in Suketi Khad water stream near Pullghrat area of Mandi district at around 3 am today.

The victims were from Bihar who were coming to Himachal’s Mandi district to work as labourers.

Meanwhile, the district police have registered a case under IPC sections 279 (rash driving), 338 (causing grievous hurt to any person) and 304 A (causing death by negligence).

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed the 88 lakh-mark and stands at 88,45,127 after 30,548 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

This is the lowest increase in daily coronavirus cases in past four months.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,30,070 after 435 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases increased to 17,47,242, followed by Karnataka with 8,61,647 cases, and Andhra Pradesh with 8,54,011 cases.

Japan’s economy rebounds 5% in the third quarter

New Delhi (NVI): Japan’s economy expanded by 5 per cent in the third quarter of 2020 as the country’s rebound from Covid-19 produced its first quarter of growth in a year.

The results also beat economist expectations of 4.4 percent growth, and analysts said the recovery was likely to continue into the final quarter of the year.

A rise in domestic demand as well as exports helped drive the quarter-on-quarter growth, after the coronavirus pandemic and a consumption tax hike slammed the economy into reverse earlier in the year.

The positive figures come after three quarters of contraction in the world’s third-largest economy, with revised data showing the economy shrank 8.2 percent in Q2, more than the previously estimated 7.9 percent.

That was the worst figure for Japan since comparable data became available in 1980, exceeding even the brutal impact of the 2008 global financial crisis.

The nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), the broadest measure of economic activity, grew 5.0 per cent in the third quarter from the preceding three-month period. It expanded at an annualized pace of 21.4 per cent.

The results exceeded expectations. Economists had expected a quarterly increase of 4.2 per cent and an annualized 18 per cent jump, according to a survey by Nikkei affiliate QUICK.

The rebound marks the fastest pace of growth since the fourth quarter of 1968.

The July-September performance was led by growth in exports, such as autos to the U.S. and semiconductors to China. Demand for semiconductors has been helped by a shift to work-from-home and the need for cloud-computing services.

So far, Japan has recorded more than 1,18,000 cases of coronavirus meanwhile nearly 1,900 deaths have been reported.

Delhi’s air quality improves after light spells of rain

New Delhi (NVI): A day after receiving light spells of rain and favourable wind speed, the air quality in Delhi improved and remained in “very poor” category this morning.

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the air quality index (AQI) in the national capital improved to 300 at around 9 am, which falls in the ‘poor category’, from 467 around the same time yesterday.

The AQI in neighbouring cities of Faridabad (256), Ghaziabad (292), Greater Noida (302), Gurgaon (314) and Noida (312), was also recorded in ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ categories.

Officials at the air monitoring stations said that, Delhi had recorded the worst pollution levels on Diwali in the past four years due to the combined effect of stubble burning, firecrackers and unfavourable meteorological conditions.

The air quality on the day after Diwali this year was also the poorest since 2016. The city recorded an overall AQI of 414 on Saturday. The 24-hour average AQI stood at 435, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the temperature will start falling in Delhi due to the impact of western disturbances and it may fall by 3-4 degrees Celsius from Monday.

“The wind speed will be favourable for dispersion of pollutants today as well,” it said.

Apart from this, Ministry of Earth Sciences’ air quality monitor, SAFAR, had also predicted that pollution levels may recede to the ‘poor category’ in case of enough rains and washout.

However, the air quality is likely to stay in the ‘very poor’ category on Tuesday and Wednesday, it added.

UK PM Johnson self-isolating after MP tests Covid positive

New Delhi (NVI): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is self-isolating after a meeting with a Member of Parliament who later tested positive for COVID-19.

Johnson was notified by the National Health Service (NHS) Test and Trace that he came in contact with someone who has tested positive and he must self-isolate, the prime minister’s spokesperson said on Sunday night.

“Today I was notified by NHS Test and Trace that I must self-isolate as I have been in contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19,” UK PM tweeted.

“I have no symptoms, but am following the rules and will be working from No10 as I continue to lead the government’s pandemic response,” his tweet further read.

Johnson on Thursday spent about 35 minutes with Ashfield MP Lee Anderson who has since tested positive.

Under the NHS Test and Trace rules, his self-isolation should run for 10 days and end on November 26.

The Prime Minister had spent three nights in intensive care at St. Thomas’ Hospital in central London in April after testing positive for COVID-19.

Coronavirus cases surpass 54.3 mn globally; US confirms 1 mn cases in a week

New Delhi (NVI): More than 54.3 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll is nearing 13,17,131, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 34.9 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The US has passed 11m coronavirus cases, just one week after confirming its ten-millionth case. More than a million cases were recorded in the country over the last week, which saw four days in a row of world record infection totals.

The current US total is 11,003,469. At least 2,46,000 people have died in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus infections have surpassed 5.8 million while the number of fatalities have exceeded 1,65,000 in the country.

Japan’s economy grew at the fastest pace on record in the third quarter, rebounding sharply from its biggest postwar slump, as improved exports and consumption helped the country emerge from the damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Italy has reported 546 Covid-related deaths, up from 544 the day before, the health ministry said on Sunday. The country also registered 33,979 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, down from 37,255 on Saturday.

Algeria imposed new coronavirus restrictions on Sunday, closing sport and cultural centres as well as beaches after a spike in infections. Algeria has registered more than 68,000 infections and at least 2,100 deaths, according to the ministry of health, with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune hospitalised in Germany with the virus last month.

The Chinese mainland reported no new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases on Sunday, the National Health Commission has reported. No new deaths related to the disease were reported.

Australia has done a remarkable job in suppressing Covid-19, and reducing community transmission of the virus to single digit figures. But a new outbreak in the state of South Australia – now up to 17 confirmed cases – after a full seven months without a community case, has put the state back on high alert.

New Delhi (NVI): All religious places across Maharashtra reopened for devotees from today, after several months of closure amid COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement to reopen religious places in Maharashtra was made by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). “All religious places including temples, shrines, churches, dargahs, etc in the state will be allowed to reopen for devotees from November 16,” CMO said.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi government said that the decision was taken as the number of coronavirus patients is low.

According to the standard operating procedures (SOP) by the state government, the rules will be the same for all the religious places. The use of face masks, sanitizers would be mandatory and social distancing is very important.

However, religious places located in the containment zones have not been allowed to reopen.

The entry of all devotees aged above 65, kids below 10 and people with comorbidity, pregnant women not advisable. Only asymptomatic people will be allowed inside places of worship.

Also, devotees are not be allowed to touch idols and no offering or sprinkling of holy water, the guidelines said.

Meanwhile, the worst-affected Maharashtra has recorded 17.47 lakh coronavirus cases, while the death toll stands at 45,984 in the state.

New Delhi (NVI): India has registered 30,548 cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall tally to 88,45,127, according to the Ministry of Health.

This is the lowest increase in daily coronavirus cases in past four months.

The country’s death toll due to the virus rose to 1,30,070, with 435 patients succumbing to the infection since yesterday.

So far, 82,49,579 patients have been cured an recovered all over the country, while the active cases remained below 5-lakh mark and stood at 4,65,478.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases increased to 17,47,242, followed by Karnataka with 8,61,647 cases, and Andhra Pradesh with 8,54,011 cases.

Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of fatalities at 45,974 followed by 11,529 in Karnataka and 11,478 in Tamil Nadu.

The other worst affected states are Tamil Nadu (7,58,191) Uttar Pradesh (5,11,304), Kerala (5,24,998) and Delhi (4,85,405).

The death toll in the national capital rose to 7,614, while 4,37,801 patients in Delhi have recovered so far, the healthy ministry data shows.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, more than 12.56 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to November 15. Of these 8,61,706 samples were tested yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Jharkhand government said that Chhath puja in water bodies including public ponds, lakes, rivers, dams, reservoirs shall not be permitted this year in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

New Delhi (NVI): The Central government has assured that 750 ICU beds will be arranged at a DRDO centre and daily testing will be scaled up to 1-1.25 lakh, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said today after a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to review the Covid situation in the national capital.

Amit Shah took stock of the situation in Delhi after the recent spike in the cases in the national capital.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain and senior officers of the central government also attended the meeting.

While interacting with media after the meeting, Kejriwal said that it is very important for all agencies and governments to work together to deal with the situation.

He further said that the shortage of ICU beds is among the key problems Delhi is facing now. He said that cases are increasing in Delhi after October 20 and there was sufficient amount of Covid beds but the scarcity is with ICU beds.

The CM added that the Centre will also help the Delhi government in getting BiPAP machines to increase the number of ICU beds at Delhi government facilities.

The daily tests will also be scaled up from around 60,000 to 1-1.25 lakh per day. Kejriwal said that the central government will help in this as Delhi government facilities are now working in full capacity.

This was the second time that Shah intervened after spike in the number of Covid-19 cases in Delhi. He had held a series of meetings in June-July when a major hike in Covid-19 cases was being recorded in the city. He had also visited several Covid-19 facilities at that time.

On Friday, Kejriwal said that the COVID-19 situation in the national capital should come under control in 7 to 10 days.

Terming pollution as the “biggest reason” behind the spike, the chief minister said the situation was under control in the city till October 20.

“COVID-19 cases have been increasing for the last few days. I am also concerned about it.

Delhi reported 7,340 new Covid-19 cases and 96 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the bulletin released by the state government. With this, total cases in the national capital has reached 4,82,170.

Currently, there are 44,456 active cases in Delhi while 7,519 deaths have been reported.
