Srinagar (NVI): J&K’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today walked almost half-a-kilometer to reach Tarkassi village in Rajouri district where he met the family members of three youth killed in a fake encounter on July 18 in Amshipora, Shopian, and assured the parents of slain youth that justice will be delivered to them at any cost.

Official sources said that LG Sinha first addressed a public gathering in a Rajouri village and later walked almost half-a-kilometer to reach Tarkassi village where he visited the house of Muhammad Yousuf, the father of one of the slain trio.

“Other two families were also present at Yousuf’s house. LG Sinha gave heard the demands put forth by the families of the three youth killed and assured them all the possible help,” officials said.

They said the family members of Imtiyaz Ahmed, 26, Ibrar Ahmed, 20, and Ibrar Ahmed, 16, demanded justice from the J&K LG and compensation, stating that so far the J&K government and police has been very cooperative with them.

“The LG assured all three families that justice will be delivered and there would be no laxity. He asked the families to let the probe complete first and hailed their patience,” officials said, adding that the family members expressed gratitude to J&K LG for walking on foot to meet them.

On October 2, the bodies of three youth killed on July 18 at Amshipora in Shopian district of South Kashmir were exhumed after their DNA samples matched with the three Rajouri families.

The Army had earlier admitted that its men had exceeded powers under AFSPA and action was being initiated against the men who took part in the encounter. Police probe had found nothing adverse against the slain trio.

The bodies of three youth were later laid to rest in their native village in Rajouri on the same day. However, a probe by the Army is still in the last phase.

Indian economy may contract by 9.6% in FY20: World Bank

Representational Image

New Delhi (NVI): The World Bank today said that India’s economy, the largest in South Asian region, is expected to contract by 9.6 per cent in the fiscal year (FY) that started in March 2020.

However, India’s growth is projected to rebound to 5.4 per cent in FY 22, mostly reflecting base effects, assuming COVID-related restrictions are completely lifted by 2022.

Furthermore, weak activity, domestically and abroad, is also likely to depress both Indian imports and exports, the Bank added.

Faced with an unprecedented downturn, India needs to continue with critical reforms to reverse the sudden and steep impacts of COVID-19 on its economy, the World Bank said in its regional update.

In its South Asia Economic Focus report, it forecasts a sharper than expected economic slump across the region, with regional growth expected to contract by 7.7 per cent in 2020, after topping 6 percent annually in the past five years.

The pandemic has also brought to the forefront new economic opportunities where digital technologies can play an essential role, providing new growth levers for South Asian countries, including India.

“The response of the Government of India to the COVID-19 outbreak was swift and comprehensive. The government implemented a national lockdown to contain the health emergency. This was followed by a comprehensive policy package to mitigate the impact on the poorest through various social protection measures as well as liquidity and financial support for small and medium enterprises. The World Bank is partnering with the government to strengthen policies, institutions, and investments for building back better,” World Bank Vice President for the South Asia Region, Hartwig Schafer said.

Three-quarters of all workers in South Asia depend on informal employment. While the poor have faced rising food prices, the COVID-19 crisis has also affected informal workers in the middle of the income distribution who experienced sharp drops in earnings, a release by the World Bank stated.

Informal workers are not generally covered by social insurance and few have savings or access to finance. Recognizing these challenges, India is reworking its social protection architecture to protect its workers, particularly informal sector workers, hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemi, the Bank added.

Junaid Ahmad, World Bank Country Director in India, said, “India is undertaking far-reaching reforms in its safety nets program. This will help the country to preserve its hard-won gains against poverty as nearly half of all households are vulnerable and the majority of the workforce lacks formal social security benefits. We are also encouraged by the recent amendments to India’s social security laws that will help provide coverage to groups of people who were earlier left out from government-assisted programs.”

“COVID-19 will profoundly transform South Asia for years to come and leave lasting scars in its economies. But there is a silver lining toward resilient recovery: the pandemic could spur innovations that improve South Asia’s future participation in global value chains, as its comparative advantage in tech services and niche tourism will likely be in higher demand as the global economy becomes more digital,” said Hans Timmer, World Bank Chief Economist for the South Asia Region.

Two brothers from Kashmir’s Budgam develop TikTok alternative

Abid Bashir

Srinagar (NVI): After developing alternatives for the banned Chinese applications SHAREit and Cam Scanner, two brothers in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district have now come up with a substitute to TikTok.

The duo has become a sensation for the younger lot as young boys and girls are flooding the house of Tipu Sultan Wani and his brother Farooq Ahmed Wani to get new apps and to learn their functioning.

The 33 MB app, which is now available on Google Play Store, titled ‘Nucular-Start Your Amazing Short Video Reactions’ was developed by Tipu Sultan and his brother Farooq Wani as an alternative to TikTok.

It may be recalled that the Centre had banned TikTok, Cam Scanner, SHAREit and 57 other applications across India in the wake of Indo-China face-off in the Eastern Ladakh.

Speaking to NVI, Tipu Sultan said Nucular is not just a TikTok clone but they have opted for a more unique design to mark their product as an alternative and not as a clone to TikTok.

“We have designed the App keeping in view the 2G internet services in Jammu and Kashmir. We have used video compression and cache to help load a video faster and quicker. This helps those who use this app on slow internet networks like 2G and 3G,” said Sultan.

He said that they have used the latest technology and they will keep adding more and more filters and editing tools as they grow. “The user can upload any video of length between 5 seconds to 60 seconds and can edit, cut, add music to any video file,” Sultan said.

Tipu’s brother  Farooq Ahmad Wani said that that future updates to the new app will include user-uploaded music files, searchable music files, live streaming, rewards (people can earn money for every video for every like, follower and share they generate) and much more.

“We will run a contest in the coming days wherein people with more than 5,000 followers can get a chance to earn Rs 2,000 worth voucher,” Farooq said, adding that he along with his brother have worked hard to develop an alternative to the TikTok.

Govt to increase number of domestic airlines to 75% soon: Puri

Tourist
Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri

New Delhi (NVI): Central Government is likely to increase the number of flights allowed to up to 75 per cent of pre-COVID levels in another week to ten days, Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said today.

“The increase in the number of passengers taking domestic flights is encouraging and the need is to further increase the number of flights allowed. We are currently in discussions and may increase it to up to 75 per cent in a week to ten days,” Puri said while addressing a media briefing.

Airlines, which were grounded due to the lockdown during the months of April and May, were allowed to restart operations from May 25.

The airlines were, initially, allowed to operate only 33 per cent of pre-COVID flights, which was increased to 45 per cent and then to 60 per cent during the first week of September.

“The future of international flights is now depending on the availability of a vaccine,” Puri added.

Answering a question on whether travel bubble arrangements will continue till March-April, the minister said, “It is difficult to say as there is no country which has completely opened its borders for all. It depends on the availability of a vaccine as countries will feel more confident once a vaccine is there.”

Air bubbles are specific arrangements between countries to allow airlines of both the countries to carry passengers.

The minister hinted that this suspension is likely to be in place till March-April. “There are basically three issues to consider before resuming regular international flights. One, resuming domestic connectivity connecting bigger cities to smaller town, which we have already done. Second, the nature of the virus on which I can’t comment and the third is international restrictions. Every country wants their people to return, but for others there are plenty of restrictions,” Puri said.
