Srinagar Police solve extortion case, arrest 3 accused

Srinagar, Jan 01 (NVI) Srinagar Police have solved an extortion and physical assault case with the arrest of three individuals involved in the crime.

The incident was reported on December 23, 2024, when Gh Mohiuddin, a sanitation worker from Firdous Abad Batamaloo, approached Police Station Maisuma in an injured condition. According to his complaint, he was attacked by a group of men near Budshah Chowk around 2:00 AM on the night of December 21-22. The attackers physically assaulted him, forcibly took cash from his wallet, and fled the scene.

Based on his complaint, a case (FIR No. 30/2024) was registered, and a thorough investigation was launched. Using CCTV footage and other technical evidence, the police identified and arrested the accused individuals:

Ishfaq Ahmad Dar alias Ish Mut, a resident of Nishat Khaki Mohalla, Srinagar.

Tahir Ahmad Mir alias 90, originally from Bangladesh Colony Rainawari, currently residing in Palpora Noorbagh, Srinagar.

Arsalan Mushtaq Wandroo alias Karihul, a resident of Hasibath Rainawari, Srinagar.

The police lauded the efforts of the investigating team for their swift action, which ensured the resolution of the case in a timely manner. Project Sampark marks 50 years of excellence: Special cover, bridge compendium unveiled

Jammu, Jan 01 (NVI) Project Sampark, a flagship initiative of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), celebrated its Golden Jubilee today, marking 50 years of unparalleled service in building and maintaining strategic road infrastructure across the challenging terrains south of the Pir Panjal ranges.

Established on January 1, 1975, with an initial road network of 500 kilometers and a modest budget of Rs 3.4 crore, Project Sampark has grown exponentially, now managing over 3,000 kilometers of critical road networks with an annual budget of Rs 1,400 crore.

To commemorate this milestone, a special cover was unveiled by DG Border Roads, Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, VSM, in a ceremony attended by Maj Gen MK Khan, VSM, ADG Army Postal Service (APS), and Brig Neeraj Madan, Chief Engineer of Project Sampark, among other senior officials. The event also saw the release of a “Bridge Compendium,” showcasing five decades of exceptional achievements in bridging some of the most challenging obstacles in the region.

The compendium celebrates the project’s role in fostering connectivity and development in border districts like Jammu, Kathua, Doda, Udhampur, Rajouri, Reasi, and Poonch. Beyond infrastructure, Project Sampark has been a beacon of socio-economic growth, uniting remote communities with the rest of the nation while embodying the ethos of BRO: “Connecting, Caring, and Contributing.”

DG Border Roads lauded the relentless efforts of Project Sampark’s personnel, past and present, who have worked under extreme conditions to tame the region’s harsh terrain. BSF opens Fire to thwart suspicious movement along border at R.S.Pura sector in Jammu

Jammu, Jan 01(NVI): The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stationed at the International Border (IB) in the RS Pura sector of Jammu opened fire early this morning after detecting suspicious movement originating from the Pakistani side.

According to officials, the alert BSF sentry noticed unusual activity and immediately took action to deter any potential infiltration. Over a dozen rounds were fired to neutralize the perceived threat.

Following the firing incident, BSF troops launched a comprehensive search operation in the forward areas to ensure the border’s security. Officials confirmed that the situation is under control and the operation is ongoing to rule out any breach of security.

Kashmir reels under intense cold as Shopian plunges to -10.2°C, Drass freezes at -18.3°C

Srinagar, Jan 1(NVI):The cold wave has gripped Kashmir one again with temperatures plummeting across the valley.

Shopian recorded a frigid -10.2°C, the coldest in the region, while Drass in Ladakh froze at an icy -18.3°C, maintaining its reputation as one of the coldest inhabited places. Gulmarg registered -8.8°C, Anantnag -8.1°C, and Srinagar -4.4°C.

In contrast, the Jammu region experienced milder weather, with Jammu city at 8.4°C and Ramban the warmest at 10.4°C. Ladakh continued to endure extreme cold, with Leh at -8.2°C and Kargil at -14.4°C.

Year Ender : Jammu Police neutralizes 14 Terrorists, busts 13 modules in Landmark Progress on Security, Crime Control in 2024

Jammu, Dec 31(NVI): The year 2024 has emerged as a transformative one for the Jammu Zone, with law enforcement agencies making remarkable progress in safeguarding public safety and addressing critical issues such as terrorism, drug trafficking, and general crime,through intensified surveillance, strategic operations, and robust community engagement, authorities have delivered significant results across several domains.

Anti-Terror Successes

Security forces successfully neutralized 14 foreign terrorists this year, dealing a decisive blow to terror networks seeking to disrupt peace in the region. Furthermore, 13 terror modules were dismantled in key districts, including Rajouri, Poonch, and Doda, showcasing the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and swift action.

Crackdown on Overground Workers (OGWs)

In a major effort to weaken the support infrastructure for terrorism, action was taken against 827 overground workers (OGWs) in 2024, a sharp rise from 282 in the previous year. Additionally, 180 individuals were detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), bolstering efforts to maintain regional stability and deter anti-national activities.

Combating the Drug Menace

The fight against drug trafficking saw significant success, with 476 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Notable seizures included nearly 10 kg of heroin recovered in the Nowshera Sector near the Line of Control and 33 kg seized from the Jammu bus stand.

To combat the rising challenge of drug abuse, a modern Drug De-addiction Centre was inaugurated in Jammu. Equipped with advanced facilities and staffed by professionals, the center provides detoxification, counseling, skill-building, and reintegration programs to support individuals battling addiction.

Sharp Decline in General Crime

The Jammu Zone recorded a substantial decline in general crime, with total cases dropping from 15,774 in 2023 to 13,163 in 2024. Property theft cases fell from 1,321 to 944, with motor vehicle thefts also seeing a decline from 653 to 507. Additionally, bovine smuggling cases saw a significant reduction, falling from 2,600 in 2023 to 1,770 in 2024.

Modernizing Crime Control Efforts

In a strategic move to address the growing threat of cybercrime, 67 police personnel underwent specialized training, and 10 Cyber Cells were operationalized across all districts in the Jammu Zone. These fully functional cells have already resolved several cases of online fraud, recovering Rs 4.75 crore in assets.

The milestones achieved in 2024 highlight the Jammu Zone’s dedication to fostering a safer environment and its commitment to innovative policing methods. Bahu Fort Aquarium cum Oceanarium to become prime tourist atttraction in Jammu : Javed Dar

Jammu, Dec 31(NVI) Bahu Fort Aquarium cum Oceanarium to become prime tourist atttraction in Jammu: Minister Javed Dar, has expressed confidence that the Bahu Fort Aquarium Cum Oceanarium will soon emerge as one of the top tourist attractions in the Jammu region.

He made these remarks during his visit to the Aquarium Cum Awareness Centre at Bahu Fort to review the progress of work on Phase-II of the project.

The Minister was briefed that the Aquarium Cum Awareness Centre project is being executed in two phases, with Phase-II works currently underway under the Public Works Department (PWD) through Smart City Limited, at an estimated cost of Rs 18.57 crores.

Highlighting the significance of the Oceanarium, Dar stated that it would be a first-of-its-kind facility in North India and the third such project in the country. The Oceanarium will feature a glass tunnel housing various marine fish species, with a holding capacity of approximately 400,000 liters of water. He emphasized that the facility will not only be a major attraction but also a key element in the development of the region’s tourism sector.

“The Oceanarium at Bahu Fort will be a game-changer for tourism, offering a unique experience to visitors,” said Dar, stressing the need for expediting the work to ensure its timely completion.

Additionally, the Minister instructed for the upgradation and facelift of existing structures at the site, aiming for completion before the Oceanarium opens. He also directed department officials to ensure the implementation of private sector schemes in strict adherence to guidelines and achieve targets within the set timelines.

Dar emphasized the vast employment potential in the Fisheries sector and urged local youth to take advantage of the schemes offered by the department. He called for a focused effort to expand fish culture initiatives and cover as many beneficiaries as possible.

During the inspection, the Minister was informed that the technical work on the Oceanarium is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed within two months. The Phase-I of the project, which opened in 2007, has already attracted a steady stream of visitors. The center features a Multimedia Hall where educational lectures on fish culture are conducted, and 24 Aqua-caves displaying over 120 species of fish.

The Minister was accompanied by Director Fisheries Abdul Majeed Tak, Joint Director Fisheries (Central) Jammu Masood Hussain Sheikh, Joint Director Fisheries (Chenab Valley) Jammu Gopal Krishan, and other senior officials from the department.(News Vibes of India)

Mughal Road Maintenance: Bufliaz to Pir Ki Gali stretch handed over to BRO

An official statement said that the transition, facilitated by District Development Commissioner Vikas Kundal, was completed with all necessary formalities.

The Deputy Commissioner of Poonch confirmed the successful handover and highlighted the significance of maintaining this key road stretch. He emphasized the need for the BRO to bolster infrastructure support, particularly during the winter months, to ensure smooth access for both civilian traffic and security forces operating in the region.

“The BRO has the necessary workforce, resources, and expertise to manage this stretch effectively, especially in challenging weather conditions and rough terrain,” the Deputy Commissioner noted.

These remarks came during his visit to Jagti Township in Nagrota, where he reviewed essential services and engaged with the Kashmiri Pandit community.

Accompanied by senior officials, including the Relief Commissioner (Migrants), Director Health Services Jammu, Director General Floriculture, and Director Food Supplies Jammu, the Deputy CM emphasized the government’s ongoing initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Kashmiri Pandit families. “We are committed to addressing the concerns of Kashmiri Pandits, ensuring their well-being through targeted programs, a strong support system, and a variety of welfare schemes,” he said.

Choudhary highlighted that efforts are being intensified to provide better living conditions for the residents of Jagti Township and the wider Kashmiri Migrant community. “Our commitment to their rehabilitation is unwavering,” he said.

During the visit, the Deputy CM conducted a detailed review of the available facilities, including health and education infrastructure, drinking water supply, and other essential services. In particular, he inspected healthcare services at the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) in Jagti, directing the Director Health Services to ensure the uninterrupted provision of high-quality medical care. This figure reflects a 10% increase compared to 2023, highlighting the region’s growing popularity among both domestic and international travelers. The surge in tourist numbers has been attributed to targeted government initiatives, improved infrastructure, enhanced connectivity, and a renewed focus on promoting the region’s diverse attractions.

Speaking to NVI, Director of Tourism Raja Yaqoob expressed optimism about the sector’s growth. “This milestone is a testament to Jammu and Kashmir’s unmatched beauty, cultural richness and adventure offerings. It also showcases the success of our efforts to create a safe and welcoming environment for tourists,” he said.

The year also witnessed a notable rise in foreign tourist arrivals, signaling Jammu and Kashmir’s growing global appeal. International travelers were drawn to the region’s picturesque valleys, serene lakes, and snow-covered peaks, alongside its vibrant festivals and unique handicrafts. ACB registers 87 FIRs, Chargesheets 32 Cases in J&K amid crackdown on Corruption in 2024

Srinagar, Dec 31 (NVI): In a major anti-corruption drive in 2024, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Jammu and Kashmir registered 87 FIRs—42 in the Jammu division and 45 in the Kashmir division—while successfully charge-sheeting 32 cases in court.

According to an official statement, the ACB launched a focused crackdown on corruption, registering 23 trap cases and 13 cases related to disproportionate assets during the year. The agency also issued 42,521 vigilance clearances via its online Vigilance Clearance Portal for purposes such as promotions, retirements, and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for travel abroad.

In its fight against the land mafia and corrupt revenue officials, the ACB registered 16 FIRs targeting the illegal usurpation of custodian land in areas like Asarwan, Mishriwala, and Bhalwal in Jammu district. This nexus reportedly involved revenue officers, the land mafia, and police officials.

The ACB also emphasized improving investigative skills through specialized training programs at the CBI Academy in Ghaziabad and internal workshops, aimed at strengthening case investigations and evidence collection.

Various complaints were addressed through the Satrak Nagrik Mobile Application, WhatsApp helpline, email, and other channels. Of the 2,772 cases referred to Departmental Vigilance Officers (DVOs), 2,434 were resolved. Additionally, six DVO conferences—three each in Jammu and Srinagar—were held to monitor pendency and expedite matters.

Throughout 2024, the ACB observed UT Vigilance Awareness Week, National Vigilance Awareness Week, and International Anti-Corruption Day to promote awareness of anti-corruption laws and foster good governance.(News Vibes of India)
