MCL CMD BN Shukla

Subrat Kumar Sarangi

Bhubaneswar (NVI): Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), an Odisha-based subsidiary of Coal India Limited, while seeking cooperation of employees, today appealed to the trade union leaders to re-consider the decision of resorting to strike.

The workers demands pertain to policy decisions beyond the purview of the company and reiterated that no coal block allotted to Mahanadi Coalfields is going to be auctioned.

“At present, MCL has 48 Coal Blocks having mineable resource of 29,100 MT, which can meet the requirement of thermal coal for another 100 years and another miscellaneous 22 projects are in pipeline, which includes washeries, coal gasification, solar power, CHP etc,” the CMD, B N Shukla said.

He also added in his appeal, that company aims at achieving coal production of 263 million tonne (MT) by 2023-24.

In the current financial year, MCL has been assigned with a target of 173 MTs of coal. However, “MCL, at present, is lagging behind in its production and overburden removal targets,” the CMD added, emphasising that any further stoppage of work will not be in the interest of company.

Even during the lockdown due to pandemic the production and dispatch continued at full pace. Shukla said, stoppage of work is never in our agenda and all our differences/ grievances are resolved in an atmosphere of mutual trust and co-operation.

He also appreciated the efforts of trade unions in motivating the employees to work for the nation during the lockdown.

Central trade unions/federations have served notices for resorting to a three-day-long-strike in Coal India and its subsidiaries from July 2, 2020, in support of their charter of demands.

However, this matter has been referred to Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner (C) of Bhubaneswar which has been seized under conciliation by Dy. CLC (C) Kolkata, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, as per the provisions of Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

Srinagar (NVI): Another infiltration bid was foiled at Parkian Gali sector in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on the intervening night of June 29 and June 30, the Army said today.

Defence Officials said that a group of at least six to eight infiltrators were challenged at Parkian Gali along LoC but they fled away taking advantage of darkness.

“On night of 29/30, suspicious movement of 6-8 persons was observed in two groups in Parkian Gali Sector, Kupwara (J&K) along the LoC. Own troops challenged the infiltrators with fire. Infiltrators ran away taking help of darkness. Details awaited,” the Indian Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar corps tweeted.

Apart from that, the Tanghdar and Nougam sectors in Kupwara district have witnessed unprovoked ceasefire violation since last night as Pakistan fired mortar shells and small arms. Top Police and Army officers have been maintaining that frequent ceasefire violations were aimed at pushing militants into this side of the LoC.

Earlier on June 1, a major infiltration bid was foiled by the Indian Army at the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowshehra sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, as three heavily armed terrorists were killed.

In early April this year, the Army foiled a major infiltration attempt at LoC in north Kashmir’s Keran sector, killing five terrorists while losing five of its soldiers from elite forces in an operation.

COVID-19 pandemic is speeding up, far from over, warns WHO

COVAX
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

New Delhi (NVI): The coronavirus pandemic is not even close to being over and is in fact speeding up in some parts of the world, said World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus adding that about 1,80,000 people worldwide have tested positive in the last 24 hours.

Tedros noted that, six months after China first alerted the WHO to a novel respiratory infection, the grim milestones of 10 million confirmed infections and 500,000 deaths had been reached.

“We all want this to be over. We all want to get on with our lives. But the hard reality is that this is not even close to being over. Although many countries have made some progress globally, the pandemic is actually speeding up,” WHO chief said while addressing a virtual media briefing.

“Some countries have now experienced a resurgence of cases as they start to reopen their economies and societies,” Tedros said. “Most people remain susceptible. The virus still has a lot of room to move.”

He further added, “For many of our countries to really not hunt down this virus is our failure in contact tracing, because we have lame excuses, saying it’s too many and it’s too difficult to trace.”

Tedros also said that the WHO would be sending a team to Wuhan next week to investigate the potential animal source of the new coronavirus.

As per the latest data by Johns Hopkins University, a total of 10,199,798 coronavirus cases and 5,02,947 deaths have been reported so far around the globe.

New swine flu strain with ‘pandemic potential’ found in China

New Delhi (NVI): Scientists in China have discovered a new type of swine flu with “pandemic potential”, a study published in the science journal PNAS has said. The flu is genetically descended from the H1N1, which caused hundreds of thousands of deaths in 2009, and is named G4.

G4 originated in Mexico and caused a worldwide epidemic in 2009.

Scientists at Chinese Universities and China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention have observed that G4 viruses have all the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus. The tests have also shown that any immunity that humans gain from exposure to seasonal flu does not provide protection against G4.

Named G4 EA H1N1, the virus was detected after analysing 30,000 nasal swabs from pigs in slaughterhouses in 10 Chinese provinces between 2011 and 2018.

“Of concern is that swine workers show elevated seroprevalence for G4 virus,” the researchers note. They have said that controlling the prevailing G4 EA H1N1 viruses in pigs and close monitoring in human populations, especially the workers in swine industry, should be urgently implemented.

“Pigs are considered as important hosts or “mixing vessels” for the generation of pandemic influenza viruses. Systematic surveillance of influenza viruses in pigs is essential for early warning and preparedness for the next potential pandemic,” the scientists have said in the research article.

Swine flu was first recognised in the 1919 pandemic and still circulates as a seasonal flu virus. Swine flu is caused by the H1N1 virus strain, which started in pigs.

In 2009, the WHO declared H1N1 a pandemic. The infection is similar to seasonal influenza and symptoms include fever, chills and sore throat.

In India, the H1N1 virus outbreak had previously occurred during the 2009 flu pandemic. The virus killed 981 people in 2009 and 1,763 in 2010. However, the mortality decreased in 2011 to 75. It claimed 405 lives in 2012 and 699 lives in 2013. In 2014, a total of 218 people died from the H1N1 flu and India recorded 837 laboratory-confirmed cases in the year.

In 2015, India saw a significant swine flu outbreak, with nearly 30,000 confirmed cases and almost 3000 deaths by March 2015, according to the Ministry of Health. The worst affected states were Rajasthan, Gujarat and Delhi.

The indigenous, inactivated vaccine has been developed and manufactured by Bharat Biotechs, BSL-3 (Bio-Safety Level 3) high containment facility located in the Genome Valley, in Hyderabad.

Clinical trials under Phase I and Phase II of the vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, approved after pre-clinical studies demonstrated safety and immune response would start across the country next month.

Apart from Bharat Biotech, many other Indian firms are also working to make a vaccine that has had a disastrous impact across the world affecting health and wealth of millions of people.

Meanwhile, a number of drug manufacturers across the world are also working to find a cure for coronavirus, but no pharmaceutical firm has won the race yet.
