2 civilians injured, houses damaged in Pak shelling along LoC in J&K’s Baramulla

Abid Bashir

Srinagar (NVI): Two civilians were injured in intense shelling while several residential houses were damaged in an unprovoked ceasefire violation by Pakistan in Hajipeer , Nambla and Rustum post sectors in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police officials said.

Officials said that Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing small arms, mortars and other weapons this afternoon.

“A few mortar shells exploded near the residential houses injuring two civilians,” the officials said, adding that the injured civilians were identified as Ahmed Shiekh (60) and Maqbool Mangral (20). “The injured were immediately evacuated to a nearby primary health centre for first-aid and their condition was stated stable.”

Defence officials said that the Indian Army responded effectively to Pakistan’s action and a befitting response was given. There are reports pouring in that a few residential houses have also suffered damage. “Once the shelling would stop, teams will go to the spot to assess the damage,” they said.

The intense shelling between the two sides triggered panic in almost a dozen villages close to LoC in Uri as many residents were seen running for safety besides taking their livestock to the safer places.

Imtiyaz Ahmed, a resident of Uri told NVI over phone that people in his village witnessed intense shelling from across and when the same was responded by the Army, it looked a war like situation.

“We took our livestock to safety and asked the people of our village to stay indoors and take safety precautions. Since there are a very few underground bunkers, people assembled in one place and took refuge in them,” Ahmed said, adding that fear gripped children and women as none of them have ventured out of their homes since morning while the livestock was also locked in cowsheds and other places.

This year, a record number of 1,645 ceasefire violations have been recorded in J&K along the LoC where Pakistan Army has used small arms to mortal shells besides indiscriminate gunfire, as per security officials.

“Every time Pakistan resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation, the Army has given them a befitting reply by retaliating effectively,” a defence official said.

NVI has recently reported that many border residents in Kashmir are planning to move to safer places if the situation doesn’t improve in the coming days.

Those who tried to transgress were taught a lesson, says PMO amid questions on PM’s remarks

New Delhi (NVI): With questions being raised over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that “neither is anyone in our territory nor has any of our posts been captured”, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) today issued a clarification, saying the observation pertained to “the situation as a consequence of the bravery of our armed forces.”

It said, “The words of the Prime Minister: ‘Those who tried to transgress our land were taught a befitting lesson by our brave sons of soil’, succinctly summed up the ethos and the values of our armed forces.”

The Prime Minister had made the remarks at an all-party meeting convened by him yesterday on the situation at the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh where 20 Indian soldiers were killed and 85 injured in a bloody face-off with Chinese troops in Galwan Valley on June 16.

After Modi’s remarks that “neither is anyone inside our territory nor has any of our posts been captured”, the Opposition has questioned why and where then did 20 Indian soldiers die.

“Attempts are being made in some quarters to give a mischievous interpretation to remarks by the Prime Minister at the All-Party Meeting (APM) yesterday,” the PMO said in a statement.

It said the Prime Minister was “clear that India would respond firmly to any attempts to transgress the Line of Actual Control (LAC). In fact, he specifically emphasized that in contrast to the past neglect of such challenges, Indian forces now decisively counter any violations of LAC (“unhe rokte hain, unhe tokte hain”).”

The PMO said the APM was informed that “this time, Chinese forces have come in much larger strength to the LAC and that the Indian response is commensurate. As regards transgression of LAC, it was clearly stated that the violence in Galwan on 15 June arose because Chinese side was seeking to erect structures just across the LAC and refused to desist from such actions.

“The focus of the PM’s remarks in the APM discussions were the events of 15 June at Galwan that led to the loss of lives of 20 Indian military personnel. Prime Minister paid glowing tributes to the valour and patriotism of our armed forces who repulsed the designs of the Chinese there. The Prime Minister’s observations that there was no Chinese presence on our side of the LAC pertained to the situation as a consequence of the bravery of our armed forces. The sacrifices of the soldiers of the 16 Bihar Regiment foiled the attempt of the Chinese side to erect structures and also cleared the attempted transgression at this point of the LAC on that day.”

It said the Prime Minister further emphasised, “I want to assure you, that our armed forces will leave no stone unturned to protect our borders”.

Regarding questions over the status of Galwan Valley, the PMO said, “What is Indian territory is clear from the map of India. This Government is strongly and resolutely committed to that. Insofar as there is some illegal occupation, the APM was briefed in great detail how over the last 60 years, more than 43,000 sq.km has been yielded under circumstances with which this country is well aware. It was also made clear that this Government will not allow any unilateral change of the LAC.”

PMO added, “At a time when our brave soldiers are defending our borders, it is unfortunate that an unnecessary controversy is being created to lower their morale. However, the predominant sentiment at the All Party Meeting was of unequivocal support to the Government and the armed forces at a time of national crisis. We are confident that the unity of the Indian people will not be undermined by motivated propaganda.”

Govt invites global owners to flag their ships under Make in India policy

New Delhi (NVI): The government has invited ship owners from around the globe to flag their ships in India to take advantage of the Make in India policy, the Ministry of Shipping said.

“With a modern maritime administration, continuous supply of trained seafarers, ship management skills already available, ship owners worldwide are invited to now flag their ships in India to take advantage of the Make in India policy of the government in respect of transportation of government cargoes,” Shipping Ministry said in a statement.

Minister of State for Shipping, Mansukh Mandaviya, reviewed the readiness of Indian shipping for implementation of the Government’s Cargo Transportation Policy.

Furthermore, it is estimated that the Make in India policy will provide an opportunity to double the number of Indian flag vessels.

For the immediate term – from the present approximately 450 to at least 900 and more over a period of 3 years, the ministry added.

The Ministry also said that Government of India has recently revised its Make in India policy for public procurement, among others, of all services.

Under the revised policy, no global tender enquiry shall be issued, except with the approval of the competent authority, for the procurement of all services with estimated value of less than Rs 200 crores, ministry added.

Neither has anyone entered our borders, nor is any of our post occupied: PM

New Delhi (NVI): In the all-party meeting convened today to discuss the India-China border face-off, Prime Minister Narendra Modi denied any Chinese intrusion in Indian territory along Line of Actual Control (LAC), while reassuring the leaders that the armed forces are capable of defending borders and have been given a free hand to take all necessary steps.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister clarified that “neither is anyone inside our territory nor is any of our post captured.” He said that 20 brave Indian soldiers “made the supreme sacrifice for the nation in Ladakh but also taught a lesson to those who had dared to look towards our motherland.”

“The nation will forever remember their valour and sacrifice,” he added.

“Be it deployment, action or counter-action, through land, sea or air, our forces are taking the necessary steps to protect the country,” the PM said. He emphasized that the country today has such capability that no one can even dare look towards an inch of our land.

He said that today, Indian forces are capable of moving together across sectors. While on the one hand, the army has been given freedom to take necessary steps, India has also conveyed its position clearly to China through diplomatic means, he said.

The PM also underscored that India wants peace and friendship, but upholding sovereignty is foremost. He highlighted that the government has given primacy to development of border area infrastructure to make the borders more secure. “Provision has also been made for fighter planes, modern helicopters, missile defence systems and other such needs of our forces,” he said.

He further stated that through the recently developed infrastructure, patrolling capacity at LAC has also increased, adding that through this, the government is better informed about the developments at LAC and is able to monitor and respond better.

“The movement of those which used to take place without any disruption earlier is now checked by our jawans, which at times leads to build-up of tension,” he said.

The prime minister emphasised that through better infrastructure, supply of material and essentials to the soldiers in the difficult terrain has become comparatively easier.

Among those present in the meeting were TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee, JDU chief Nitish Kumar, Congress Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and BSP President Mayawati.

20 Indian troops were killed in a violent face-off with the Chinese army in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley while the de-escalation process was underway on June 15-16 night.
