PM speaks to Trudeau over Covid-19

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, to discuss the prevailing global situation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the conversation, PM Modi thanked the Canadian Prime Minister for the assistance and support extended to the Indian citizens present in Canada, especially students.

PM Modi also assured him that India’s productive capabilities in the pharmaceutical sector would remain available for assisting the citizens of the world, including those of Canada, to the best of India’s abilities.

Justin Trudeau also appreciated the support provided by Government of India for Canadian citizens in India.

Furthermore, the two leaders agreed on the importance of global solidarity and coordination, the maintenance of supply chains, and collaborative research activities.

 

Both the leaders also agreed that the partnership between India and Canada could contribute meaningfully to the global effort to fight the pandemic, especially through collaboration in research and technology aimed at finding a vaccine or therapeutic solutions to COVID-19.

In a tweet, PM Modi said, “Had a warm exchange with PM @JustinTrudeau. Thanked him for looking after Indian citizens in Canada in these difficult times.”

“Collaboration and partnership between India and Canada is vital to fighting the pandemic including through medical research and supply chain management,” he added.

List of names of 169 tropical cyclones for 13 countries released by IMD

New Delhi (NVI): The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a list of 169 names of upcoming tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

The tropical cyclone names for India include Gati, Tej, Murasu, Aag, Vyom, Jhar, Probaho, Neer, Prabhanjan, Ghurni, Ambud, Jaladhi and Vega.

In addition to this, some of the names for Bangladesh are Nisarga, Biparjoy, Arnab and Upakul.

The Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC), New Delhi, provides tropical cyclone and storm surge advisories to 13 member countries of World Meteorological Organization (WMO)/ESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific).

The 13 member countries are India, Bangladesh, Iran, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

IMD is one of the six Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres (RSMC) recognised worldwide and is mandated to issue advisories and name tropical cyclones in the north Indian Ocean region.

The list comprises of names of 13 cyclones each for the 13 member countries, totaling to 169.

It should be noticed that the naming of the cyclones helps the scientific community, disaster managers, media and general masses in all. It helps to identify each individual cyclone. It further helps to create awareness of its development, remove confusion and rapidly and effectively disseminate warnings to much wider audience.

New Delhi (NVI): On the 15th day of the extended nationwide lockdown, COVID-19 cases keep on increasing, with total confirmed cases at 31,332 and 1,007 deaths so far, according to the Union Health Ministry.

After the first confirmed coronavirus case in India, which was reported in the state of Kerala on January 30, the virus has tightened its grip across the nation.

US coronavirus cases surge past 1 million

New Delhi (NVI): The total confirmed coronavirus cases in the US passed one million mark today, accounting for a third of cases worldwide, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The US death toll is now over 57,000 people.

Meanwhile, the total number of people confirmed to have coronavirus has gone up to 3.1 million and at least 2,15,000 people have died so far around the globe.

However, more than 9,20,000 people have recovered from the deadly virus worldwide.

In addition to this, the French PM Edouard Philippe presented plans to unwind a nationwide lockdown from May 11 conditional on the number of new cases dropping below 3,000 per day, accoding to media reports.

China’s National Health Commission said that 22 new cases of coronavirus were reported in the last 24 hours, all but one of them in people who had returned from overseas.

Covid-19 cases in India rise to 31,332; death toll at 1,007

New Delhi (NVI): The death toll due to coronavirus in India rose to 1,007 while the total number of positive cases increased to 31,332, the Union Health Ministry said this morning.

In the last 24 hours, 1,897 cases were reported in the country, it said.

At least 73 people lost their lives, resulting in the steepest rise in COVID-19 deaths in India in one day.

With 9,318 confirmed cases of COVID-19 so far, Maharashtra remains worst-affected state, followed by Gujarat with 3,744 cases and Delhi with 3,314 cases.

Meanwhile, the recovery rate of COVID-19 patients has as such improved to 23.3 percent of total cases, as per Health Ministry.

At least 7,696 people have been discharged or cured in the country.

Rs 50 L compensation for port employees in case of death due to Covid-19

New Delhi (NVI): The government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50 lakh for port employees/workers in the event of loss of life due to COVID-19.

In a statement today, the Ministry of Shipping said that it has decided that all the “Major Ports may grant compensation/Ex-Gratia in the event of loss of life due to COVID-19 to the dependent members/legal heirs of the port employees.”

The amount of compensation applies to all Port employees including Contract Labourers employed directly by the port as well as Other Contractual Labourers.

the monetary compensation has been declared to cover the risk of life due to COVID-19 contamination while discharging the Port related duty, the ministry said.

“Port Chairman is the competent authority for the settling claims/disbursement of the compensation/Ex-Gratia and verifying authority for the cause of death from COVID-19. This compensation is applicable only for the pandemic of COVID-19 and shall be in force up to30.09.2020, subject to review thereafter,” it added.

No evidence to support plasma therapy as Covid-19 treatment yet: Centre

New Delhi (NVI): There are no approved therapies for COVID-19 currently including plasma therapy, the Union Ministry of Health said today while making it clear that it is one of the many therapies which are being experimented with.

“There is no approved therapy for Covid-19 in the country including Plasma therapy. Plasma therapy is being experimented with and there is no evidence to support it as a treatment. It is only at an experimental stage. If not used properly, it can create life-threatening complications,” said Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary in Health Ministry, during the daily media briefing today.

So far there is no evidence to support it as a treatment, the ministry said in a statement today, adding that ICMR has also started a National Study to evaluate the efficacy of the therapy.

“However, it needs to be clarified that until ICMR concludes its study and robust scientific proof is available, it should not be used except for research and trial purposes. In fact, use of plasma therapy may have life threatening complications. ICMR has already issued detailed guidelines in this regard for the use of plasma therapy outside the study purposes,” the health ministry statement read.

The government’s clarification regarding the therapy comes amid media reports that it is helping in the recovery of virus-infected patients.

Apart from that, the Health Ministry said that as of today, there are 17 districts in the country where earlier cases had come, but now no new case has been reported for the last 28 days.

“The number of these districts has increased by 1 (two new districts have been added whereas one has been dropped from the previous list) since yesterday. The districts that got added to the list are Kalimpong (West Bengal) & Wayanad (Kerala). The district which was removed from this list is Lakhisarai (Bihar),” the ministry said in a statement.

As of now, 6,868 people have been cured with a recovery rate of 23.3%. A total of 29,435 people have been confirmed positive as of now for COVID-19 in India, according to the ministry.

J&K’s Covid tally climbs to 566 after 20 more test positive

Srinagar (NVI): Twenty more people have been tested positive for the deadly coronavirus virus in Jammu and Kashmir, pushing the total tally to 566.

Officials said that ten cases were tested positive at SKIMS Laboratory while ten more were tested positive at CD hospital, Srinagar. Among them, eight are from Anantnag, five are from Baramulla, four from Shopian, two from Pulwama and one from Kupwara.

Dr GH Yatoo, Nodal officer for COVID-19 at SKIMS said that out of 630 samples tested today, 10 were found positive for the Covid.

Dr Salim Khan, Nodal officer for COVID-19 at GMC Srinagar said that out of 377 samples tested, 10 were tested positive. Among them, 8 are from Anantnag while as 2 are from Pulwama, he added.

He further said that 689 samples were received today while the results of 180 samples are awaited.

As per the daily COVID bulletin, Bandipora is topping the list of positive cases in Kashmir with 127 cases. “Srinagar has 86, Shopian 71, Baramulla 72, Anantnag 62, Kupwara 49, Ganderbal 14, Budgam 15, Kulgam 6, and Pulwama 5,” the bulletin read.

In the Jammu region, the bulletin stated that Jammu has 26 cases, Udhampur 20,  Samba 4, Rajouri 4, Kathua 1, Kishtwar 1 and Ramban 1.

“The total number of positive cases in J&K is 565 of which 381 are active cases. 167 people have recovered and eight people have died so far,” the bulletin read.

It stated that 66,977 people have been enlisted for observation while as 6,364 have been kept under home quarantine. “381 people are in hospital isolation and 255 are under hospital quarantine. Surveillance of 52,172 people has been completed. 9,082 persons are under home surveillance,” the bulletin read.

2 militants killed, soldier injured in encounter at Shopian in south Kashmir

Srinagar (NVI): Two militants were killed while a soldier was injured in an encounter in Mehloora village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, a police official said.

The encounter took place after joint teams of Army, Police and CRPF launched a massive search operation on receiving a tip-off about the presence of militants in village Mehloora, Zainpora, in Shopian district, police sources said earlier.

“As the security forces zeroed in on the suspected house where militants were believed to be hiding, the militants fired indiscriminately triggering off an encounter. Heavy exchange of fire is going on from both sides,” a police official said.

“One militant has been killed. The operation is underway,” defence spokesperson in Srinagar, Rajesh Kalia told NVI earlier.
