Srinagar shivers at -2.1° C : A signal to harsh winter

NVI Correspondent

Srinagar, Nov 28 (NVI): Srinagar experienced a significant drop in temperature, with the mercury touching -2.1°C (night temperature) signaling the onset of harsh winter conditions
in the Kashmir Valley.

The night-time chill intensified across the region with the southern district of Shopian emerging as the coldest place, recording a bone-chilling low of -5.5°C.

This dip in temperatures is prelude to the Chillai Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period in Kashmir that typically starts from December 21.

During this phase, the region witnesses intense cold, frequent snowfall, and frozen water bodies, including parts of the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar.

These cold conditions often disrupt daily life. Such temperature variations highlight the stark weather conditions of the valley, where the nights are freezing and even daytime temperatures struggle to rise above freezing levels in many areas.

Residents and authorities are bracing for further drops in temperature and the challenges they bring, particularly in remote and higher-altitude areas like Shopian. (News Vibes of India)

Goodwill gesture: Traffic police distributes free helmets to children travelling with parents

Traffic police distributing free helmets to children travelling with parents on two wheelers in Srinagar

NVI Correspondent

Srinagar, Nov 26(NVI): In Srinagar, traffic authorities have launched a unique initiative aimed at enhancing road safety for children travelling with their parents.

As part of this effort, the traffic cops were seen distributing free helmets to children who were traveling on two-wheelers with their parents.

This move highlights the growing concern about the safety of young passengers, particularly given the higher risks they face in the event of road accidents.

“The distribution of helmets is part of a broader strategy to promote awareness about the importance of wearing helmets and ensuring that all passengers, especially children, are protected during their journeys,” a Traffic cop told NVI at Moulana Azad Road Srinagar.

He said by providing the helmets free, the traffic police are making it easier for parents to adhere to safety regulations without financial burden, which is especially important for lower-income families.

In addition to the helmet distribution, the traffic police in Srinagar have been vocal about their approach to enforcing traffic laws concerning non-Jammu and Kashmir (JK) registered vehicles.

In a statement, the traffic department clarified that they would not indiscriminately seize vehicles registered outside the region. Instead, vehicles from other states would only be seized if their drivers were found to be habitual offenders or if they repeatedly violated traffic laws. This policy reflects a more lenient approach to non-local and local drivers driving non J&K registered vehicles.

“The decision to target habitual offenders rather than non-local vehicles in general shows a shift toward more measured enforcement,” Imtiyaz Ahmed, another traffic cop said. It also addresses concerns from the public and visitors regarding the inconvenience and potential hardships faced by out-of-state drivers.

Today’s gesture by the Srinagar traffic police demonstrates a balanced approach to promote safety and fairness, a move widely hailed by parents. (News Vibes of India)
