Massive Protests rock Katra over proposed rope way to Vaishnodevi Shrine

NVI Correspondent

Jammu, Nov 25 (NVI): For the fourth consecutive day, traders, Palki wallas (pony operators)and other groups opposing the proposed ropeway project along the pilgrimage trek to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine atop Trikuta hills in Katra, Jammu, staged a massive protest demanding immediate cancellation of the rope way project stating that it would hit their livelihood.

The ropeway project, aimed at reducing travel time for devotees and improving accessibility to the shrine has faced significant opposition from various stakeholders.

Witnesses told NVI that on the fourth straight day, the protesters argued that the project could lead to widespread unemployment among those who depend on traditional modes of transport, such as pony rides, palanquins and small businesses catering to pilgrims along the route.

Moreover, there are concerns about the potential environmental impact of the project, including deforestation and disruption of local ecosystems.

These grievances snow- balled into a heated demonstration, during which protestors resorted to stone pelting to voice their dissatisfaction and draw attention to their plight.

The situation quickly escalated, prompting the authorities to dispatch additional security forces to the area to restore order and ensure the safety of pilgrims and local residents.

Officials have appealed for calm and assured protesters that their concerns will be addressed through dialogue. (News Vibes of India)
