Srinagar, Jan 16(NVI): Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Central Kashmir, Rajiv Omprakash Pande, today urged the youth to embrace fitness as a proactive way to combat the growing drug menace in the Valley.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for a cycling expedition from Srinagar’s iconic Lal Chowk to Kanyakumari, DIG Pande highlighted how physical activity can transform lives and steer young people away from harmful habits. The expedition, he noted, not only promotes personal health but also advocates for a cleaner, greener India.

“Drug abuse is a major challenge among our youth, but adopting fitness can be a game-changer,” DIG Pande said. “When you commit to a fitness journey, negative habits like drug use naturally take a backseat. Fitness builds discipline, purpose, and a sense of accomplishment.”

He commended the cyclists for their determination, emphasizing that such initiatives inspire others to prioritize health and channel their energy positively. He also called on parents, teachers, and communities to encourage the younger generation to engage in activities like cycling and sports to lead healthier, drug-free lives.

Vital Roads closed amid Rain, Snow forecast in Jammu & Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 16(NVI): Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have temporarily closed several key roads, including Gurez-Bandipora, Mughal Road, and Sinthan Top, as a safety measure following adverse weather predictions.

These closures come in light of forecasts warning of rain and snow in the region, which could lead to hazardous road conditions.

An official confirmed that the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway is currently open for traffic. However, commuters are being advised to follow lane discipline to prevent congestion and ensure smooth movement. “Travelers should plan their journeys during daylight hours and avoid unnecessary stops, especially in vulnerable areas like Ramban and Banihal, where there is a high risk of landslides and shooting stones due to the weather,” the official said.

Additionally, traffic on the strategic SSG (Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri) road will only be allowed after clearance from the Border Roads Organization (BRO). Other key routes, such as the Bhaderwah-Chamba road, Mughal Road, and Sinthan Top, remain closed due to snow accumulation. However, the Karnah-Kupwara road has been cleared and is open for travel.

The Meteorological Department has forecast light rain and snow at scattered locations across Jammu and Kashmir from January 16 to January 19. With the possibility of further snowfall and deteriorating road conditions, travelers have been urged to stay updated on the latest advisories and exercise extreme caution.

Rajouri deaths: No disease detected from samples of deceased, Says Sakina Itoo

Srinagar, Jan 15(NVI): In a significant development regarding the mysterious deaths in Budhal, Rajouri, the Health Minister Salina Itoo today confirmed that all medical tests conducted on the deceased and those who fell ill in the area have ruled out the presence of any disease.

Since December 2024, over a dozen unexplained fatalities have been reported in Budhal, including three recent deaths that have further alarmed the local community.

Speaking on the matter, the Health Minister said the seriousness of the issue and called for a comprehensive investigation. “All medical examinations have confirmed that no disease is responsible for the deaths. However, this is a serious concern, and a thorough probe is essential to provide answers to the people,” she stated.

Local residents remain anxious as the mystery deepens. “We are glad to know there’s no disease, but we still need to understand what is happening,” said a Budhal resident.

Innova Captab Pharma Company starts operation in Jammu

Jammu, Jan 15 (NVI) Pharma company Innova Captab Limited has commenced commercial production at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Kathua district of Jammu, the firm announced.

The facility comprises four dedicated manufacturing blocks including General, Cephalosporin, Penicillin and Penum with a capability to manufacture a diverse range of products in oral solid dosages, dry powder injectables, dry syrup, BFS, large volume parenterals and respiratory respule products, it said.

With this expansion, the company, at a consolidated level, have total five manufacturing facilities with nine independent manufacturing blocks.

Commenting on the recent development, the company’s Managing Director Vinay Lohariwala said, “This marks a significant milestone in our growth journey, enhancing both our production capacity and product basket. This will also enhance our ability to meet the evolving needs of our customers.”

He said the expansion is a strategic step in line with the company’s long-term vision to strengthen its market position and fuel sustainable growth.

The facility has been established with a total capital outlay of more than Rs 450 crore and with the start of commercial production, the company is poised to benefit from the Central Government’s ‘New Central Sector Scheme’, for Capital Interest Subvention of 6% per annum and GST-linked incentive of 300% of investment made in plant and machinery in 10 years. Srinagar Police detain 6 for inciting sectarian unrest

Srinagar, Jan 15(NVI): Six individuals were today detained and lodged at the Central Jail in Srinagar after being charged under sections 126 and 170 of the BNSS for inciting sectarian unrest through derogatory remarks.

The Srinagar Police took swift action following the suspects’ involvement in spreading content aimed at fueling division and disturbing public harmony.

In a press release, the police emphasized the gravity of such unlawful activities and issued a stern warning to the public. The authorities made it clear that any individual found engaging in similar acts, including the posting or sharing of sectarian content intended to disrupt peace, will face severe consequences.

The move comes as part of ongoing efforts by the police to maintain social harmony and prevent any efforts to disturb the region’s stability. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any such activities to the authorities.

J&K Students Association appeals for urgent action, inquiry into health crisis in Rajouri district

Srinagar, Jan 15(NVI): The Jammu & Kashmir Students Association has called on Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda to intervene in the ongoing health crisis in Rajouri, where a mysterious illness has claimed the lives of over 16 individuals, including 11 children.

The outbreak, which started in Badhaal village of Kotranka sub-division of Rajouri district in early December last year, had caused widespread panic among residents.

Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of the association, described the rapidly escalating situation, with recent cases of severe illness predominantly affecting children from previously impacted families. The disease manifests symptoms such as fever, vomiting, dehydration, and episodic loss of consciousness. Despite the efforts of expert teams to conduct field studies and collect samples, the exact cause of the disease remains unidentified.

“The absence of conclusive findings and the lack of clear communication from the administration have intensified the distress among the affected communities,” said Khuehami. He called for the immediate deployment of medical experts, epidemiologists, and necessary resources to address the outbreak and support the affected families.

Khuehami also urged the Health Ministry to expedite the laboratory analysis of the samples and ensure timely, transparent communication with the public to curb misinformation and reduce panic. Additionally, the association has demanded a high-level inquiry to determine the cause of the outbreak and ensure accountability.

“The tragedy in Rajouri highlights the urgent need for better healthcare infrastructure in remote areas,” Khuehami said. “Swift action is crucial to prevent further loss of life and restore confidence in the region’s healthcare system.”

Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime Kashmir, emphasized that platforms are being closely monitored for malicious content. “Strict legal action will be taken against violators under relevant laws,” the statement read.

The SP further appealed to the public to act responsibly while engaging online, stressing the importance of collective efforts in maintaining peace and unity.

“Cyber Police Kashmir is dedicated to creating a safe online environment. Citizens are encouraged to report any objectionable content via the official helpline or email,” the advisory added.

Army Day 2025: Army chief highlights security gains in J&K, says Focus on modernization

Srinagar, Jan 15(NVI): Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi today stated that violence in Jammu and Kashmir has significantly declined due to sustained efforts by security forces.

He pointed to the peaceful conduct of Assembly polls, Lok Sabha polls, and the Amarnath Yatra as evidence of the region’s improved security situation.

“In the hinterland of Jammu and Kashmir, stringent measures by security forces have resulted in a considerable reduction in violence. The peaceful completion of key events reflects a better environment in the region,” the Army Chief said, addressing the 77th army day function in New Delhi.

Commenting on the situation along the northern and western borders, Gen Dwivedi described the northern border as “stable but sensitive,” with focused efforts on enhancing critical infrastructure. On the Line of Control (LoC), he noted that while the ceasefire agreement is holding, infiltration attempts continue to be a challenge.

Highlighting the Army’s modernization initiatives, the Chief said, “India is progressing toward becoming a developed nation, and a secure environment is vital for this growth. The Indian Army is committed to evolving into a modern, agile, and technology-driven force to meet future challenges.”

For the first time, the Army Day parade was held in Pune, celebrating the region’s historic significance as a bastion of military resilience since the time of the Marathas. The parade also featured a special performance by the Nepali Army band and showcased the increasing role of women in the Army, with their participation in both officer and non-officer capacities.

Intense cold in Kashmir: Srinagar shivers at -4.8°C, Drass coldest at -22.0°C

Srinagar, Jan 15(NVI):Srinagar recorded a bone-chilling minimum temperature of -4.8°C today, as the ongoing cold wave continues to intensify across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The freezing temperatures have gripped both urban and rural areas, disrupting daily life and amplifying concerns about essential services during this harsh winter season.

The entire Kashmir region remains in the throes of a severe cold spell. Qazigund was colder than Srinagar at -5.4°C, while Pahalgam and Gulmarg, known for their scenic beauty, froze at -8.4°C and -7.4°C, respectively. Sonamarg emerged as the coldest location in Kashmir, recording an icy -9.3°C. Other districts like Pulwama (-5.8°C), Shopian (-7.9°C), and Larnoo (-8.8°C) are also experiencing severe sub-zero conditions.

Meanwhile, Budgam, Kupwara, Bandipora, Kokernag, and Baramulla reported minimum temperatures between -3.4°C and -4.7°C, leaving no respite from the freezing weather. Reports from Anantnag are yet to come in, but Khudwani recorded a frosty -6.6°C.

In the Jammu region, the plains are comparatively warmer, with Jammu city recording a minimum of 6.0°C, followed by Katra at 6.8°C. However, the upper reaches, including Banihal (-1.5°C), Bhaderwah (-0.7°C), and Padder (-8.1°C), are witnessing sharp drops in temperatures. Ramban, Reasi, and Udhampur recorded lows between 3.4°C and 4.7°C, while Kathua remained slightly warmer at 6.3°C.

Ladakh, known for its harsh winters, is facing extreme cold. Leh recorded -12.2°C, while Kargil plummeted to -13.7°C. Drass, the second coldest inhabited place in the world, remained the coldest in the region at a staggering -22.0°C.

The biting cold has led to frozen water pipes, slippery roads, and disruptions in public transport in several areas. The drop in temperatures has also increased reliance on traditional heating methods, causing a spike in firewood and kerosene demand. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, especially during nighttime and early mornings when roads are most prone to frost.

The Meteorological Department has predicted no significant weather disturbances over the coming days, but the mercury is expected to dip further in some areas. Residents across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are advised to stay warm and take necessary precautions against the cold. (News Vibes of India)

Kargil tragedy: 5 dead, 2 critically injured in fatal head-on collision

Srinagar, Jan 14(NVI): A devastating road accident in Kargil’s Shilikchey area today claimed five lives and left two others critically injured when a Scorpio and a tipper collided head-on.

The impact was so severe that both vehicles plunged into a deep gorge, prompting an immediate rescue operation by locals and authorities.

According to officials, the victims were rushed to the nearest hospital, where five were declared dead on arrival. The two injured individuals remain in critical condition and are receiving intensive medical care.

The deceased includes three locals identified as Mohd Hassan, son of Mohd Hussain, a resident of Stakpa; Liyaqat Ali, son of A.K. Raza, a resident of Choskore; and Mohd Ibrahim, son of Haji Mohd, a resident of Badgam, Kargil. The identities of the other two victims, who are believed to be non-locals, are yet to be ascertained.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred on a steep and narrow stretch of the road, which may have contributed to the vehicles losing control after the collision. Rescue efforts were challenging due to the vehicles falling into the gorge.

Authorities have registered a case, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Initial reports suggest speeding or reckless driving may have played a role in the tragedy.
