Boris Johnson invites PM Modi to attend G7 Summit

New Delhi (NVI): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has invited PM Modi to attend the G7 summit to be held in English region of Cornwall in the United Kingdom from June 11 to 13 this year.

UK PM Boris Johnson will use the first in-person G7 summit in almost two years to ask leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to seize the opportunity to build back better from coronavirus, uniting to make the future fairer, greener and more prosperous, the British High Commission said in an official statement.

This year, the UK has also invited leaders from India, Australia and South Korea to attend as guest countries to deepen the expertise and experience around the table. The Prime Minister’s ambition is to use the G7 to intensify cooperation between the world’s democratic and technologically advanced nations. Between them the 10 leaders represent over 60% of the people living in democracies around the world, the BHC said.

As ‘pharmacy of the world’, India already supplies more than 50% of the world’s vaccines, and the UK and India have worked closely together throughout the pandemic. Our Prime Ministers speak regularly and Prime Minister Johnson has said he will visit India ahead of the G7, it said.

The High Commission further said the invitation to India, Australia and South Korea is testament to the UK’s commitment to ensuring multilateral institutions better reflect today’s world.

“The UK was the first P5 member to support a permanent UNSC seat for India and the first G7 member to invite India to a G7 Summit in 2005. As current BRICS President and G20 President in 2023, India will play a key role driving in multilateral cooperation helping to build back better around the world,” the BHC said.

“As the most prominent grouping of democratic countries, the G7 has long been the catalyst for decisive international action to tackle the greatest challenges we face. From cancelling developing world debt to our universal condemnation of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the world has looked to the G7 to apply our shared values and diplomatic might to create a more open and prosperous planet,” the UK PM was quoted as saying by BHC.

“Coronavirus is doubtless the most destructive force we have seen for generations and the greatest test of the modern world order we have experienced. It is only right that we approach the challenge of building back better by uniting with a spirit of openness to create a better future,” he added.

Prime Ministers and Presidents from the world’s leading democracies will come together in the UK in June to address shared challenges, from beating coronavirus and tackling climate change, to ensuring that people everywhere can benefit from open trade, technological change and scientific discovery, BHC said.

The G7 – which is made up of the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the USA and the EU – is the only forum where the world’s most influential and open societies and advanced economies are brought together for close-knit discussions.

The UK will also host a number of meetings throughout the year between Government Ministers from the G7, both virtually and in different locations across the UK. These ministerial summits will cover economic, environmental, health, trade, technology, development and foreign policy issues, The British High Commission said.

Notably, 2021 marks a crucial year of international leadership for the UK. In addition to the G7 Summit, during February the UK will assume the Presidency of the UN Security Council, and later this year the UK will host COP26 in Glasgow and a global education conference aimed at getting children in the developing world into school.

PM flags off eight trains for better connectivity to Statue of Unity in Gujarat

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off eight trains facilitating seamless rail connectivity between different regions of the country and Kevadiya, home to the Statue of Unity dedicated to Vallabhbhai Patel, in Gujarat via video-conferencing.

PM Modi had yesterday said that the Kevadiya railway station is India’s first with green building certification.

“Now, more reason to visit the ‘Statue of Unity!’ This iconic statue, a tribute to the great Sardar Patel is connected via railways to different regions of India. 8 trains will be flagged off tomorrow, 17 January at 11 AM. Do watch the programme live,” PM said in a tweet.

Following are the trains that will connect parts of the country to Kevadiya:

Apart from that, several other projects relating to the railways has also been inaugurated during the event. These include the new station buildings of Kevadiya, Dabhoi, and Chandon.

One of the trains is the Jan Shatabdi Express between Ahmedabad and Kevadia which will have Vistadome coaches, PM Modi said while posting some pictures of the train coaches.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that the regions of the country that are unconnected and left behind are being connected through railways connection.

PM Modi underlined change in approach in railways infrastructure development in recent times. “This change has led to unprecedented progress in modernization in Indian Railways,” he said.

He said that earlier focus was limited to keeping the existing infrastructure running and there was little attention on new thinking or new technology.

“It was imperative to change this approach. In the recent years, work was done on comprehensive transformation of entire railway system and it wasn’t limited to tinkering with budget and new train announcements. The transformation took place on many fronts,” he said.

The PM also gave example of the present project of connecting Kevadiya where multi-pronged focus led to completion of the task in record time.

He also presented Dedicated Freight Corridor as an example of change in approach from earlier times. The Prime Minister dedicated the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors recently. This project was under progress and between 2006-2014 work was done only on papers with not even a single kilometre track laid. Now a total of 1100 Kilometre are about to be completed in next few months.

Norway: 23 people die within days of getting first COVID-19 vaccine dose

Pfizer

New Delhi (NVI): At least 23 people have died in Norway within days of receiving first dose of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine with 13 of those deaths apparently related to the side effects of the shots, according to the Norwegian Medicines Agency.

All 13 were nursing home patients and at least 80 years old.

“The reports suggest that common adverse reactions to mRNA vaccines, such as fever and nausea, may have contributed to a fatal outcome in some frail patients,” Sigurd Hortemo, chief physician at the Norwegian Medicines Agency said.

“For those with the most severe frailty, even relatively mild vaccine side effects can have serious consequences,” the Norwegian Institute of Public Health warned. “For those who have a very short remaining life span anyway, the benefit of the vaccine may be marginal or irrelevant,” it added.

As a result, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health has updated the covid-19 vaccination guide with more detailed advice on vaccinating the elderly who are frail.

Even in France, a frail patient had died within two hours of getting vaccinated. However, authorities ruled out that it was due to the side effect of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Pfizer and BioNTech are working with the Norwegian authorities to investigate the deaths in Norway.

However, according to Pfizer, the regulator discovered that the number of incidents so far is not alarming and in line with expectations.

More than 30,000 people in Norway have received the first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus vaccine since December 27.

The total number of coronavirus cases reported in Norway is 58,202, while the death toll stands at 517, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In south Kashmir, majority of health workers refuse Covid-19 vaccine shots

Neyaz Elahi

Srinagar (NVI): As the Covid-19 vaccine administration was launched in Kashmir, most of the health workers have refused to take the vaccine shots in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The behavior of the health workers puzzled top officials who believe they did not take vaccine shots out of fear.

To administer Covid-19 vaccine to some 4,000 health workers, the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir had chosen 90 locations across the Valley.

While health workers in other locations administered shots without any disturbance, in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, majority of the health workers showed reluctance.

Sources said that authorities had set up two locations in the district. 100 health workers each were supposed to get COVID-19 vaccine at Government Medical College and Sub-District Hospital Bijbehara respectively.

Insiders said that out of 100, only 29 health workers were administered vaccine at Sub-District Hospital Bijbehara.

Out of the people who were administered vaccine, only 6 were doctors.

“They are frontline workers with top-priority access to the Covid-19 vaccine, but they are refusing to take it. I am shocked. I believe, they are doing this out of fear,” Chief Medical Officer Anantnag, Dr Muktar Ahmed said.

A medico who willingly took vaccine shot said that the scientific evidence is clear regarding the safety and efficacy of the vaccines after trials. “May be we can say skepticism remains there.”

Another health worker suggested that authorities can persuade reluctant workers by using instructional videos and ensure them this vaccine is safe and secure.

Sources said that at some other locations too, health workers declined to take the vaccine.

Principal, Government Medical College, Anantnag, Dr Showkat Jeelani said that he is himself surprised and is on his way to these hospitals to ascertain the facts.
