J&K Rajouri DM bans public movement, construction in flood-hit Bela areas for 60 days

Rajouri, July 23 (NVI): The district administration in Rajouri has imposed a 60-day ban on public and vehicular movement besides suspending all construction activities in the flood-affected Bela Market and Bela Colony areas following the recent flash floods, officials said on Thursday.

An order issued by the District Magistrate and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Rajouri, said the restrictions were imposed after flash floods in the Rajouri Tawi River caused extensive damage to shops, commercial establishments, vehicles, public infrastructure and the local bus stand in the affected areas.

According to the order, technical inspections conducted by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department and other engineering agencies found the affected zone to be highly vulnerable, posing an imminent threat to human life, public safety and property.

The administration has prohibited all public and vehicular movement in the identified flood-hit zone and suspended construction, excavation, dumping and related activities for 60 days pending a detailed hydrological assessment and final demarcation by the competent authorities.

The order also directed the authorities to barricade or close approach roads, link roads and pedestrian tracks leading to the affected stretches of Bela Market, Bela Colony and the Rajouri Tawi River. Concerned departments have been asked to jointly survey and demarcate the vulnerable area, stop any ongoing construction works and submit a compliance report within 24 hours.

Emergency services, including police, SDRF, NDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, medical teams, executive magistrates, revenue and municipal officials, and personnel engaged in authorised flood protection and restoration works have been exempted from the restrictions.

The Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, has been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the order through police deployment, checkpoints and joint patrols to prevent unauthorised entry into the restricted zone.

The administration appealed to residents to stay away from the affected areas and cooperate with the authorities, warning that violations of the order would attract legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Disaster Management Act, 2005.—(NVI)

Four chargesheeted in Rs 2.5 crore shawl fraud case in Kashmir

Srinagar, July 23 (NVI): The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday filed a chargesheet against four persons in connection with an alleged Rs 2.5 crore shawl fraud case, officials said.

According to the EOW, the chargesheet was filed before the Court of Sub Judge (Small Causes), Srinagar, in connection with FIR No. 55/2022 registered under relevant provisions of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).

The accused have been charged with allegedly cheating a trader by inducing him to supply shawls worth over Rs 2.5 crore on the promise of profitable returns but failing to make the payment.

Officials said the investigation revealed that the accused had allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy to obtain the shawls through fraudulent means.

During the course of the investigation, 338 shawls valued at around Rs 68 lakh were recovered and handed over to the complainant under court directions, they said.

The EOW said the investigation has been completed and the chargesheet has been filed before the competent court for trial.

The agency also urged people to remain vigilant against economic frauds and report suspicious financial activities to the authorities.(NVI)

Security forces continue search operation in Kashmir after policeman’s killing

Srinagar, Jul 23 (NVI): Security forces on Thursday continued a cordon and search operation in and around the Lal Chowk area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, a day after a policeman was killed in a terror attack, officials said.

Joint teams of the police, Army and paramilitary forces are conducting the operation to track down the attackers involved in Wednesday’s attack, the officials said.

Security has been intensified across the area, with additional deployment and heightened surveillance as the search operation continues, they said.

The officials said the operation was underway till the filing of this report and appealed to residents to cooperate with the security forces during the ongoing searches.(NVI)

Day After Cop’s Killing, Houses of Two LeT Terrorists Demolished in Kashmir

Srinagar, July 23 (NVI): Authorities today demolished the houses of two alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, a day after a policeman was killed in a terrorist attack, officials said.

Officials that the newly-constructed house of Adil Ahmad Thoker was demolished in Guri in Anantnag district.

In another action carried out during the intervening night, the single-storey residential house of Haroon Rashid Ganai was demolished in Bijbehara.

According to the officials, Ganai has been an active terrorist affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba since 2018.

The demolition was carried out jointly by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army’s 1 Rashtriya Rifles and 90 Battalion CRPF, they said.

The action comes a day after Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi was killed in a terrorist attack in Anantnag district, for which a proxy group of Pakistan-based LeT claimed responsibility.

Soldier Injured After Fall During Anti-Terror Operation in J&K’s Rajouri

Rajouri, July 22 (NVI): A soldier was injured after slipping from a height while returning from an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Wednesday, officials said.

The injured soldier, identified as Sepoy Gurpreet Singh, is suspected to have suffered a head injury after the fall, they said.

He was immediately evacuated from the area and shifted to the Army’s 150 General Hospital in Rajouri for treatment.

Officials said the incident occurred while the soldier was returning from an anti-terror operation. His condition was being monitored, while further details were awaited.(NVI)

DRDO signs two contracts for AEW&C Mk-II programme

New Delhi, Jul 22 (NVI): The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday signed two major contracts with industry partners for the Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) Mk-II programme, aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous airborne surveillance capabilities.

According to the Defence Ministry, the Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS), a DRDO laboratory, signed a contract with AI Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) for converting six Airbus A321 aircraft from commercial to green configuration for the AEW&C Mk-II programme.

In a separate agreement, CABS signed a contract with Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited (ADSTL) as the Development-cum-Production Partner for the mission systems of the programme.

The agreements were signed in the presence of Defence Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi.

Under the programme, CABS, with support from ADSTL, will integrate the mission systems onto the modified A321 platform. The aircraft will subsequently undergo flight testing in coordination with the Indian Air Force before certification by the concerned military airworthiness agencies, the ministry said.

The AEW&C Mk-II system is expected to provide enhanced endurance, advanced airborne surveillance, secure communication, improved situational awareness and stronger command-and-control capabilities, significantly boosting the country’s air defence preparedness.

The ministry said the participation of domestic industry in the programme reflects the government’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.(NVI)

Anantnag terror attack: Massive crackdown across Kashmir, over 2,000 suspected OGWs detained

Srinagar, July 22 (NVI): Security forces have launched an extensive crackdown across the Kashmir Valley following the killing of a police head constable in a terrorist attack in Anantnag district, with more than 2,000 suspected Over Ground Workers (OGWs) detained for questioning, officials said on Wednesday.

According to officials, joint teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces carried out coordinated raids at multiple locations across the Valley as part of intensified counter-terror operations in the wake of the attack.

They said over 2,000 suspected OGWs have been picked up for questioning, while search and cordon operations have been stepped up, particularly in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, to trace those involved in the attack.

Head Constable Ashiq Hussain, who was deployed for Amarnath Yatra security duty, was shot dead by terrorists at Lal Chowk in Anantnag on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a massive security response.

Following the incident, security forces sealed the area and launched a large-scale manhunt to track down the assailants.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, describing it as a cowardly act, and expressed condolences to the family of the slain policeman.

Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, accompanied by Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) V.K. Birdi and other senior officers, visited the attack site to assess the security situation and oversee the ongoing operations, officials added.(NVI)

The officers laid floral wreaths and observed a Guard of Honour in memory of the slain policeman, who laid down his life in a terrorist attack at Lal Chowk, Anantnag.

CM Omar Abdullah reviews flood preparedness, directs restoration of essential services within 24 hours

Srinagar, Jul 22 (NVI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to review flood preparedness, restoration works and relief measures across the Union Territory following incessant rains and flash floods, directing officials to restore essential services, particularly drinking water and electricity, within 24 hours.

Chairing the meeting at the Civil Secretariat here, Abdullah stressed the need for maintaining a high state of preparedness to tackle flood-like situations arising from erratic weather conditions.

He directed the concerned departments to minimise loss of life and property, prioritise restoration works in vulnerable areas and intensify efforts to trace missing persons.

The chief minister also asked the divisional commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu to assess the situation in the worst-affected districts and ensure that adequate funds are placed at the disposal of deputy commissioners for immediate relief, rehabilitation and restoration of damaged infrastructure.

Reviewing rescue operations in the flood-hit districts of Poonch and Rajouri, Abdullah directed the district administrations to ensure that relief camps are equipped with food, drinking water and medical facilities.

Officials informed the meeting that rescue and relief operations involving the civil administration, police, SDRF, NDRF, Army, BRO and other departments are continuing in the affected areas.

The chief minister also directed the Power Development Department to restore electricity in the worst-hit districts within the stipulated timeline, saying restoration of drinking water supply largely depends on power supply.

Officials said the Kashmir division has identified 654 vulnerable villages with an estimated 7.22 lakh population at risk. Around 1,505 people have already been shifted to designated rescue centres as a precaution, while evacuation plans remain in place for other vulnerable locations.

The meeting was informed that 744 rescue centres, 108 SDRF boats, 25 Army boats, 98 satellite phones and 102 identified helipads have been kept ready to strengthen emergency response.

Officials further said water levels in the Jhelum river remain below the warning level at all monitoring stations and essential services, including healthcare, drinking water supply and telecommunications, are functioning normally.

In Jammu division, authorities have identified 363 vulnerable locations, activated round-the-clock emergency operation centres, conducted 142 mock drills and earmarked 138 functional helipads for emergency operations, officials said.(NVI)

Srinagar, July 22 (NVI): Security forces on Wednesday intensified counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district following the terror attack in neighbouring Anantnag, detaining hundreds of suspects for questioning and stepping up searches, officials said.

Officials said those detained include suspected overground workers (OGWs), who are being questioned and their antecedents verified as part of the security exercise.

Based on intelligence inputs, police and security forces also conducted raids and search operations at multiple locations across the district, they said.

Security has been tightened across Shopian, with additional personnel deployed at vulnerable locations and vehicle checking intensified at various checkpoints to maintain strict surveillance.

Officials said area domination patrols, enhanced surveillance and coordinated operations involving police and other security agencies are underway to prevent any attempt by militants or their supporters to disrupt peace and law and order in the district.

The heightened security measures come in the wake of the terror attack in Anantnag earlier in the day in which a police head constable was killed.(NVI)
