New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed 1 crore-mark and currently stands at 10,099,066 after 23,950 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,46,444 after 333 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases crossed 19-lakh mark and stands at 19,02,458 followed by Karnataka with 9,11,382 cases, and Andhra Pradesh with 8,79,339 cases.

Coronavirus cases surge past 77.3 million worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): More than 77.9 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 17,16,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 43.9 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 18 million and currently stand at 18,218,466, while the number of fatalities caused due to the deadly contagion have exceeded 3,22,000 in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 73 lakh-mark and stands at 7,318,821 while the number of deaths have surged past 1,88,000 in the country.

Meanwhile, Singapore has banned entry from the UK from Wednesday night, which has significant implications for anyone who has flights booked through that destination as a stopping point to another country.

Peru surpassed 1 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus, health officials said on Tuesday, as concerns about a potential second wave of infections began to grow in the hard-hit Andean nation. The country has also recorded 37,218 deaths, according to a daily briefing on the pandemic.

Furthermore, South Korea reported 1,092 new coronavirus cases as of Tuesday midnight, the second highest since the start of the pandemic, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said.

The Philippines has announced that it will suspend all flights to the UK from December 24. The Philippines joins a list of more than 40 countries who have restricted entry from the UK because of a new variant of coronavirus that has taken hold.

China reported 15 new Covid cases on December 22, the same as a day earlier, the country’s national health authority said on Wednesday. The total number of confirmed cases in China now stands at 86,882, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,634.

India, World Bank sign $500 mn pact to develop safe, green highway corridors

New Delhi (NVI): India and World Bank have signed a pact of USD 500 million project to build green and safe national highway corridors in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.

The Green National Highways Corridors project will enhance the capacity of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in mainstreaming safety and green technologies, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.

It will support MoRTH construct 783 km of highways in various geographies by integrating safe and green technology designs such as local and marginal materials, industrial byproducts, and other bioengineering solutions, the statement added.

This project will also help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the construction and maintenance of highways.

The agreement was signed by C S Mohapatra, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance on behalf of the government of India and Sumila Gulyani, Acting Country Director, India on behalf of the World Bank.

After signing of the pact, Mohapatra said that the government is committed to environmentally sustainable development in its infrastructure projects. This project will set new standards in the construction of safe motorable roads.

The ultimate objective of transport infrastructure is to provide seamless connectivity and reduce logistics costs, the statement said.

It added that, the government has launched many investment programs in road sector infrastructure to strengthen and improve logistics performance. This project will support analytics to map the freight volume and movement pattern on the National Highway network, identify constraints, and provide innovative logistics solutions.

“Historically, the transport sector in India has offered limited employment opportunities for women,” the statement noted.

In addition, the project will support the ministry with an in-depth analysis of gender-related issues in the sector along with help in creating jobs for women by training women-led micro enterprises and women collectives to implement green technologies in the highway corridors.

World Bank Country Director (India) Junad Ahmad also said, “Connectivity for economic growth and connectivity for sustainable development are two important aspects of a country’s development trajectory. This operation brings these two priorities together in support of India’s growth strategy.”

“This project will provide efficient transportation for road users in the four states, connect people with markets and services, promote efficient use of construction materials and water to reduce the depletion of scarce natural resources, and help lower GHG emissions,” he added.

The national highways of India carry about 40 percent of road traffic. However, several sections of these highways have inadequate capacity, weak drainage structures and black spots prone to accidents.

The project will strengthen and widen existing structures; construct new pavements, drainage facilities and bypasses; improve junctions; and introduce road safety features, the statement further said.

As it is imperative that the infrastructure investments are climate resilient, disaster risk assessment of about 5,000 km of the National Highway network will be undertaken under the project along with support to ministry for mainstreaming climate resilience aspects in project design and implementation, it added.

Meanwhile, the USD 500 million loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), has a maturity of 18.5 years including a grace period of five years.

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India increased to 10,099,066 with a single-day rise of 23,950 fresh cases in the past 24 hours, Union Health Ministry confirmed.

The country’s death toll due to the virus rose to 1,46,444, with 333 patients succumbing to the infection since yesterday.

At present, 96,63,382 patients have been cured an recovered across the country, while the active cases remained below 3-lakh mark and stands at 2,89,240.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases crossed 19-lakh mark and stands at 19,02,458 followed by Karnataka with 9,11,382 cases, and Andhra Pradesh with 8,79,339 cases.

The other worst affected states are Tamil Nadu (8,99,014), Kerala (7,15,341), Delhi (6,18,747) and Uttar Pradesh (5,76,832).

Meanwhile, of the total deaths, Maharashtra tops the tally with 48,876 fatalities, followed by Karnataka with 12,029 deaths.

The death toll in the national capital surpassed to 10,329, while 5,99,683 patients have been cured and recovered so far, the healthy ministry data shows.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, over 16.42 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to December 22. Of these, 10,98,164 samples were tested yesterday.

Furthermore, the Puducherry government yesterday said there would be no ban on new year celebrations in the UT and the beach road would be open for the public. But there should be strict adherence to COVID-related safety norms of social distancing and wearing of masks

EESL signs MoU with RINL to provide energy efficient solutions

New Delhi (NVI): EESL has signed an MoU with Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) to provide energy-efficient solutions for industrial lighting, Air Conditioners (ACs) and motors.

“We’ve signed an MoU with @RINL_VSP to provide #energyefficient solutions for industrial lighting, super-efficient ACs and energy efficient motors,” Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) said in a tweet.

RINL is a corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, a Navratna Power Sector Enterprise (PSE) under the Ministry of Steel.

EESL, a joint venture by Power PSUs, is engaged in its efforts to build a sustainable India through its several initiatives.

Yesterday, EESL signed an agreement with Gwalior Municipal Corporation in Madhya Pradesh to install 52,000 LED streetlights in the city, under its Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP).

Class 10, 12 board exams after Feb

New Delhi (NVI): The class 10 and 12 board exams will be held after February only, considering the Covid-19 pandemic and exact dates would be announced soon on the basis of the situation, Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said today.

In a live interaction with teachers, the Education Minister said that the decision has been taken after receiving requests from students and teachers to postpone the exams.

“I received a lot of requests from various #students & #teachers to postpone @cbseindia29 board #exams for Class 10 & 12. Keeping the #COVID19 pandemic in mind & after various consultations, we have decided that #board exams will not be held in February,” the Minister said in a tweet.

“Exact dates will be announced soon. Our govt is in favour of #students,” he added.

Nishank further said that the board exams will have 33 per cent internal choice as well. Apart from that, 30 per cent of the syllabus has been reduced and other state boards are also expected to follow the same, he said, adding that there could be an alternative to practical exams owing to the pandemic.

Rajnath discusses security situation in Indo-Pacific region with Japanese counterpart

New Delhi (NVI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke to his Japanese counterpart Kishi Nobuo over telephone and the two leaders exchanged views on bilateral issues, with focus on a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Rajnath also congratulated Nobuo Kishi on his appointment as Japanese Defence Minister and expressed satisfaction at the ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries in spite of the limitations imposed by COVID 19, PIB’s Defence Wing said in a statement.

“The two Ministers exchanged views on security situation in the region and the need for a free and open maritime order based on the rule of law,” read the statement. The telephonic conversation between the two leaders also comes amid the prevailing tensions between India and China due to a border stand-off along LAC in Ladakh region for over past eight months.

During the conversation, both the leaders welcomed the successful conduct of joint maritime exercise JIMEX 2020, MALABAR 2020 and also the recent successful visit of Chief of Staff, JASDF to India.

They expressed satisfaction at the signing of the Agreement on Reciprocal Provision of Supplies and Services in further promoting defence ties between the two countries.

During the telephonic conversation, the Ministers reviewed the progress on various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives and expressed commitment to further elevate engagements between the Armed Forces under the framework of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, according to the statement.

The Ministers agreed that in the recent past, both countries have made notable strides in Defence Industry and Technology cooperation and look forward to even greater cooperation in this field.

Notably, India and Japan are part of QUAD grouping of nations; the other members are Australia and the US. The four countries have also participated in joint naval drills in the Indo-Pacific region recently to counter the growing assertiveness of China.

Malaysia to obtain 6.4 mn doses of Covid vaccine from AstraZeneca

New Delhi (NVI): Malaysia has signed a deal with AstraZeneca to secure 6.4 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.

In a televised address, the Malaysian PM said, “The government is also in final negotiations with China’s Sinovac, CanSino Biologics and Russia’s Gamaleya Research Institute, part of a plan to get supplies to cover more than 80% of the population, or 26.5 million people.”

The country expects to spend $504.4 million on the shots, he added.

Earlier in November, the government had signed a to secure 12.8 million doses from Pfizer-BioNTech covid vaccine and is also sourcing vaccines from the World Health Organization’s COVAX programme.

Under the Pfizer deal, Malaysia expects to receive one million doses in the first quarter of 2021, with vaccinations expected to begin in February. The remaining doses of the vaccine, which requires ultra-cold storage, will arrive in subsequent quarters.

After keeping the coronavirus in check for much of the year, Malaysia has been battling a third wave of infections, which accelerated after a state election in the Borneo state of Sabah in September and then spread to Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding areas.

So far, the country has reported 95,327 coronavirus infections and 438 people have died from the deadly contagion.

No need to panic, new coronavirus strain not detected in India so far: Govt

New Delhi (NVI): The new coronavirus strain found in the United Kingdom has not been detected in India so far and there is no need to panic, the Union Government said today.

While addressing a presser here, NITI Aayog member, Dr VK Paul said, “There is no cause for concern, no need to panic, as for now. We need to stay vigilant.”

“The new strain of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom has increased transmissibility. This mutation is not affecting the severity of the disease,” he said.

“Case fatality is not affected by this mutation,” Paul added.

Earlier today, Union Health Ministry issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for passengers arriving from the UK, which states that people coming from the country should undergo RT-PCR test and isolate themselves in a separate unit of an institutional facility if found positive.

Furthermore, India has suspended all passenger flights connecting the United Kingdom from Wednesday till December 31 or till further orders in the wake of the emergence of a mutated strain of the virus there, joining several other countries that have imposed a similar flight ban.
