New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India crossed 97 lakh-mark and currently stands at 97,03,770 after 26,567 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,40,958 after 385 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In the worst-affected Maharashtra, COVID-19 confirmed cases increased to 18,55,341 which include 47,774 deaths. The active cases in the state stand at 76,852 and 17,30,715 recoveries.

Students affected by COVID-related school closures soared by 38% in Nov: UNICEF

New Delhi (NVI): The students affected by COVID-19-related school closures worldwide increased by 38 per cent in November, damaging the learning and well-being of over 90 million children, according to the UNICEF.

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has also called on governments around the world to prioritize the reopening of schools and put measures in place to make them as safe as possible.

According to the data by UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as of December 1 classrooms are closed for nearly one in five schoolchildren globally, or 320 million. It’s an increase of nearly 90 million students in one month from 232 million.

UNICEF Global Chief of Education Robert Jenkins said, “In spite of everything we have learned about COVID-19, the role of schools in community transmission, and the steps we can take to keep children safe at school, we are moving in the wrong direction—and doing so very quickly.”

“Evidence shows that schools are not the main drivers of this pandemic. Yet, we are seeing an alarming trend whereby governments are once again closing down schools as a first recourse rather than a last resort. In some cases, this is being done nationwide, rather than community by community, and children are continuing to suffer the devastating impacts on their learning, mental and physical well-being and safety.”

Moreover, the agency cited a recent study using data from 191 countries, which showed no association between school status and COVID-19 infection rates in the community. It added that there is a little evidence that schools contribute to higher rates of transmission.

UNICEF also noted that, when schools close, children risk losing their learning, support system, food and safety, with the most marginalized children who are the most likely to drop out altogether paying the heaviest price.

“As millions of children remain out of their classrooms for more than nine months, too many schools are closing unnecessarily and not enough emphasis has been placed on taking the necessary steps to make schools safe from COVID-19,” the agency said.

It further added that the re-opening plans must include expanding access to education, including remote learning and education systems must also be adapted and rebuilt to withstand future crises.

The UN agency, together with the UN educational agency UNESCO, the refugee agency UNHCR, the UN World Food Programme and the World Bank, has published a Framework for Reopening Schools, with practical advice covering areas such as policy reform, financing requirements, safe operations and reaching the most marginalized children.

“What we have learned about schooling during the time of COVID is clear: the benefits of keeping schools open far outweigh the costs of closing them, and nationwide closures of schools should be avoided at all costs,” Jenkins added.

PM Modi congratulates Invest India

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated Invest India for winning the 2020 United Nation’s Investment Promotion Award.

“Congratulations to Invest India for winning the 2020 United Nations Investment Promotion Award given by UNCTAD. This is a testimony to our government’s focus on making India the world’s preferred investment destination & improving ease of doing business,” PM Modi tweeted.

The UNCTAD has declared ‘Invest India’ as winner of the 2020 United Nations Investment Promotion Award, according to a release by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

“Invest India” is the National Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency of India.

It is a non-profit venture set up in 2009 under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

US adds Pakistan among nations of concern for religious freedom violations

New Delhi (NVI): US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, announced that the United States has designated Pakistan and nine other nations as ‘Countries of Particular Concern’ for violation of religious freedom.

Pompeo added that Myanmar, Eritrea, Iran, Nigeria, North Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan were also placed in the blacklist for engaging in or tolerating systematic, ongoing egregious violations of religious freedom.

According to an official statement, four other countries, namely Comoros, Cuba, Nicaragua and Russia have also been added to a Special Watch List as the governments in these countries have engaged in or tolerated severe violation of religious freedom.

Pompeo also said, “The US is unwavering in its commitment to religious freedom. No country or entity should be allowed to persecute people with impunity because of their beliefs. These annual designations show that when religious freedom is attacked, we will act.”

In an official statement, the Secretary of State also informed that, religious freedom is an unalienable right, and the bedrock upon which free societies are built and flourish.

“Today, the United States, a nation founded by those fleeing religious persecution, as the recent Commission on Unalienable Rights report noted, once again took action to defend those who simply want to exercise this essential freedom, ” he added.

Under the US law, nations on the blacklist must make improvements or face sanctions including losses of US government assistance. However, the administration can waive such actions.

Pompeo further said, our work is far complete, adding that the “United States will continue to work tirelessly to end religiously motivated abuses and persecution around the world, and to help ensure that each person, everywhere, at all times, has the right to live according to the dictates of conscience.”

Coronavirus cases surpass 67.5 mn worldwide; recovered cases top 43.4 mn

New Delhi (NVI): More than 67.5 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 15,44,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 43.4 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 14.9 million while the number of fatalities due to the deadly contagion have crossed 2,83,000.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 66 lakh-mark and stands at 6,623,911 while the number of deaths have surged past 1,77,000 in the country.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong will ban evening dining at restaurants and close fitness centres, as part of new measures aimed at stemming a fourth wave of coronavirus infections.

South Korea has signed a deal to buy Covid-19 vaccines for 44 million people, Yonhap news agency has reported, signing deals with four companies: Pfizer, Astrazeneca, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson.

South Korea reported 594 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday as the government prepared to outline its plans to secure enough vaccine candidates to potentially vaccinate millions of people next year.

China reported 12 new Covid-19 cases on December 7, down from 15 cases a day earlier, the national health authority said on Tuesday.

Mexico’s health ministry on Monday reported 6,399 new cases of coronavirus infection and an additional 357 fatalities, bringing the country’s totals to 1,182,249 cases and 110,074 deaths.

New Delhi (NVI): India has registered 26,567 new infections of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall caseload to 97,03,770, according to the Ministry of Health.

This is for the first time since July when daily coronavirus cases is less than 27,000 in a day.

The country’s death toll due to the virus rose to 1,40,958, with 385 patients succumbing to the infection since yesterday.

Notably, a total of 91,78,946 patients have been cured or discharged so far, while the active cases remained below 4-lakh mark and stands at 3,83,866, as per the ministry data.

In the worst-affected Maharashtra, COVID-19 confirmed cases increased to 18,55,341 which include 47,774 deaths. The active cases in the state stand at 76,852 and 17,30,715 recoveries.

Maharashra is followed by Karnataka (8,94,004), Andhra Pradesh (8,72,288), Tamil Nadu (7,91,552), Kerala (6,39,664) and Uttar Pradesh (5,56,397).

Meanwhile, the national capital has registered 5,93,924 COVID-19 cases, while 9,706 people have died of the virus in Delhi.

Over 14.8 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to December 7. Of these 10,26,399 samples were tested yesterday, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday said that the country will not have to wait too long for the coronavirus vaccine even as he cautioned people that there should be no laxity as far as prevention of the infection is concerned.

New Delhi (NVI): Two new zoos, one each in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were granted recognition by the Central Government today.

Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar approved the recognition of these two new zoos at the 37th General Body meeting of Central Zoo Authority chaired today, chaired by him.

“Congratulations to Rajgir Zoo Safari at Nalanda and Shaheed Ashfaque Ullah Khan Prani Udyaan in Gorakhpur. Approved their recognition in the Central Zoo Authority meeting today. The state-of-the-art facilities in these zoos will help bring people closer to nature,” Javadekar said in a tweet.

The two new zoos are the Rajgir Zoo Safari in Nalanda, Bihar and Shaheed Ashfaque Ullah Khan Prani Udyaan in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

On the occasion, the Environment Minister also applauded the good progress in developing a 10-year Vision Plan for the up-gradation of 15 select zoos in the country to global standards which is hoped to ‘twin’ top Indian and foreign zoos and also bring in the corporate sector to invest in modernization as part of this project.

The Minister also said that early next year an investors summit will also happen to take this agenda forward.

Rajgir Zoo Safari in Bihar is established exclusively comprising on only safari enclosures which, on contrary to conventional enclosure, offer larger space for captive animals.

There are five safari enclosures and a walk-in proposed in the zoo. The zoo proposes to house Lion, Bear, Tiger, Leopard and a mixed safari of common herbivore species such as Spotted Deer, Sambar among others.

The zoo is located close to the historically important Nalanda and is expected to have a high footfall. The establishment of the zoo was personally monitored by the Chief Minister of the state. The zoo will display wild animals in naturalistic safari enclosures and promote awareness of towards wildlife conservation.

Shaheed Ashfaque Ullah Khan Prani Udyaan in Gorakhpur, is the ninth zoo in U.P. The establishment of the zoo is personally monitoring by the Chief Minister of the state.

The zoo is situated in the spiritual land of Gorakhpur and has a high visitation. The zoo features enclosures for a range of birds, herbivores and carnivores. The zoo aims to create awareness through naturalistic enclosures and create long-lasting visitor experience through state-of-the-art visitor facilities like 4D Theatre, battery-operated train and accessibility to Divyangjan.

New version of Super Hornet fighter perfect for Indian Navy: Boeing

New Delhi (NVI) American company Boeing says its latest version of F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet fighter jet, being manufactured for the US Navy, is the world’s most lethal aircraft and it can enable the Indian armed forces to challenge the next generation of adversaries, if procured.

The Block III version of the jet can perform virtually every mission in the tactical spectrum, including air superiority, day/night strike with precision-guided weapons, fighter escort, close air support, suppression of enemy air defence, maritime strike, reconnaissance, forward air control and buddy refuelling, according to the Boeing.

Significant technology insertions in the form of advanced cockpit, new computing & advanced data link, conformal fuel tanks, increases airframe life and ability to carry wide variety of weapons makes F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet most lethal platform for Air Force and Navies of the world, it says.

Pointing out that more than 700 F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets are in operation today, the Boeing said F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet will offer superior economics to the Indian armed forces in the form of low cost of acquisition, operations and high mission readiness.

“The F/A-18 Super Hornet Block III offers the Indian Navy a unique and differentiated capability in the form of an advanced, combat proven, multi-role naval fighter that is fully compatible with the Indian Navy carriers and would boost the growing maritime and defense relationship between the United States and India,” it says.

Designed as a carrier-based fighter for high-loading, high-stress operations, the F/A-18E/F Block III Super Hornet requires minimal support equipment and will offer impressive low cost per flight hour with high mission readiness.

The F/A-18E/F Block III Super Hornet can act as a force multiplier for the Indian Navy as it interfaces with assets such as the P-8I, which is already in use by the force.

France, TN sign MoU to boost investments, promote ease of doing business

New Delhi (NVI): An MoU was signed between the French government and Tamil Nadu’s Industrial Guidance and Export Promotion Bureau and the Indo-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry today to boost mutual investments and promote ease of doing business.

The development took place during the visit to French envoy to India Emmanuel Lenain to Chennai today. The French ambassador is on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu from December 7-8.

During his visit, Lenain held talks with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and discussed how French companies can contribute to Tamil Nadu’s goals in industry, R&D and sustainability, as well as opportunities in the Indo Pacific. They also discussed people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

“Proud to witness @Guidance_TN & Indo-French Chamber of Commerce @IFCCI1 signing an MoU that will foster investments & promote ease of doing business. A great step forward to harness the many business opportunities between France and #TamilNadu!,” the French envoy said in a tweet.

Lenain also visited the main factory of Royal Enfield motorbike company. Pertinent to mention here that Royal Enfield has established a site in France to cater to the European market.

“Royal Enfield’s motorbikes are truly iconic. We are proud that @royalenfield has chosen France to further expand its presence in Europe. As the top FDI destination in EU, France can be the gateway to Europe for Indian investors. #ChooseFrance,” he said in another tweet.

The French envoy also visited French company Air Liquide’s medical system facility manufacturing medical ventilators. He said in a tweet that the French company chose Tamil Nadu to set up an advanced medical systems facility.

“France’s @airliquidegroup chose Tamil Nadu to set up an advanced medical systems facility. During the worst of the pandemic, they ramped up production to supply 1000 ventilators to Tamil Nadu’s hospitals, mirroring the support that Flag of France & Flag of India lent each other during this crisis,” he tweeted.

In another tweet, Lenain said: “#TamilNadu shares special ties with France through its 5000-year culture and unique geography. It is also one the most dynamic and innovative places in India. My visit to #Chennai aims to boost our partnership and discuss new Flag of France investments in Tamil Nadu’s priority sectors.

Notably, Tamil Nadu, which attracts a significant share of all French investments in India is home to more than 140 French companies in automotive, healthcare, industry, digital technologies, services and energy space.

16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to be held virtually on Jan 9

New Delhi (NVI): The 16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in a virtual format on January 9 next year in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the convention.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention is the flagship event of the Government of India and provides an important platform to engage and connect with the overseas Diaspora. The theme of PBD 2021 is “Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

The website for the 16th PBD 2021 will be inaugurated by Minister of State for External Affairs, V. Muraleedharan on tomorrow, launching the commencement of online registration for participation in the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention 2021.a

In run up to the 16th PBD Convention, five PBD Conferences are being held virtually in 2020-2021.

The winners of Bharat ko Janiye Quiz will also be announced in the inaugural session. The PBD Convention will include two Plenary Sessions – (i) ” Role of Diaspora in Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, and (ii) “Facing Post Covid Challenges – Scenario in Health, Economy, Social and International Relations”.

This will be followed by the Valedictory Session where the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Awards will be announced to honour eminent overseas Indians for their contributions to various fields both in India and abroad. Hon’ble Rashtrapati ji will deliver the Valedictory address to the diaspora.
