at 2:39 pm

New Delhi, Nov 5 (NVI): Two people were killed and another Injured after a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Chawri Bazaar area of Old Delhi on Thursday, while rescue operations are underway to search for people feared trapped under the debris.

DCP Central District Rohit Rajbir Singh said the building was under construction and had reached the third floor, with further work in progress.

According to the DCP, the structure reportedly collapsed while a concrete slab was being laid, causing a major portion of the building to cave in.

He said three people have so far been rescued from the debris with significant assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Of the three rescued, two were declared dead at the hospital, while the third sustained injuries and is stated to be out of danger.

The DCP said these were the only confirmed casualties so far, while the rescue operation was continuing.

He added that residents of neighbouring buildings had been evacuated as a precautionary measure. The adjacent structure has also been rendered vulnerable, raising concerns as debris is being shifted towards that side.

Teams from Delhi Police, the fire department, NDRF and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been deployed at the site.

Rescue and debris-clearing operations are continuing to ascertain whether any more people remain trapped beneath the rubble.—(NVI)
