Srinagar, July 22 (NVI): In a terror attack, a policeman was killed today in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.
The incident took place at around 12.30 pm in the Lal Chowk in the heart of Anantnag district, officials said.
Constable Ashiq Hussain sustained critical injuries was immediately shifted to a hospital, where doctors declared him “brought dead”.
CCTV footage recovered from the site showed Hussain leaving a shop and being followed by a man, wearing a mask and black clothes.
The unidentified terrorist had a white cloth over his arms, apparently hiding his weapon with which he fired a few quick rounds at Hussain who collapsed instantly.
Two men standing outside the adjacent shop immediately ran inside when they saw Hussain being shot and collapsing.
After shooting Hussain from behind, the assailant ran away.
An unknown outfit, claiming to be ‘United Liberation Council’, later issued a social media post, owning responsibility for the attack.
Officials said it was a proxy name used by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terror outfit.
Security forces have launched a search operation.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident, the officials added. (NVI)
