Budgam, Nov 3 (NVI): Senior National Conference leader and Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Tuesday announced his decision to quit the party and resign from the Lok Sabha, citing differences with the leadership over political commitments and issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir.
Ruhullah made the announcement while addressing a public gathering at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam on the death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi.
He accused the National Conference leadership of betraying the public mandate and failing to honour its electoral commitments, particularly on issues concerning the restoration of Article 370, constitutional rights, reservation and the release of prisoners.
Ruhullah said his decision was guided by principles and political commitments rather than personal grievances or disappointment over not being given any position within the party.
He said he was unwilling to compromise on the issues on which the NC had sought people’s support during elections.
Clarifying his political position, Ruhullah said his objective was not merely to leave one party and join another, but to bring together honest and committed youth from Jammu and Kashmir who understand the pain and aspirations of the people.
He appealed to parents to encourage their children, whom they have raised through honesty and hard work, to come forward and contribute towards bringing about social and political change.
Ruhullah said he wanted to build a platform of sincere and dedicated young people committed to public welfare and the betterment of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Srinagar Lok Sabha seat will fall vacant only after the Lok Sabha Speaker accepts his formal resignation. A by-election to the constituency will be held thereafter in accordance with the applicable legal provisions.—(NVI)
