Srinagar, July 15 (NVI):- Thousands of Shia Muslims participated today in the 8th Muharram procession here for which special arrangements were made by the administration.
Clad in black clothes, the devotees beat their chests to mourn to martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
There was no untoward incident as the procession moved on the traditional route in Srinagar city.
IGP (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar Birdi, who distributed water to the mourners, told reporters that the procession is being taken out peacefully and mourners have been cooperating very well.
He said they have kept volunteers who have been cooperating with police to ensure peaceful procession.
He said that permission for the procession was given on the certain conditions like last year to ensure peaceful environment.
Asked whether permission would be granted for the 10th Muharam procession, he said the district administration is looking into it and any decision will be taken after taking into account all parameters.
