Shivam Bakshi Poonch, July 20 (NVI) : At least seven people were killed after a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall struck the Loran-Dumilan area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Monday, officials said.
The landslide occurred amid continuous heavy rain, causing extensive damage in the affected area, they said.
Officials said seven bodies have been recovered so far, while search and rescue operations are continuing to trace any other persons who may be trapped under the debris.
Residents said announcements were made through mosque loudspeakers to alert people as heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides continued to pose a threat in the area.
Teams of the police, civil administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local volunteers rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations.
Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage even as rescue efforts remain underway.
The latest tragedy comes a day after flash floods triggered by torrential rain claimed at least 12 lives and left several others missing in parts of the Jammu division, particularly Poonch and Rajouri districts, causing widespread damage to houses, public infrastructure, livestock and agricultural land.(NVI)
