New Delhi (NV): The administration of Jalandhar imposed night curfew in the district from today till further notice, to tackle upsurge in daily coronavirus cases.

The curfew in Punjab’s Jalandhar will remain in place from 11 pm to 5 am, according to the order issued.

“Observing the hike in the COVID-19 cases in Jalandhar district, night curfew has been imposed from 11 pm to 5 am from March 6 and will be applicable till further notice,” read a order issued by the office of Jalandhar District Magistrate Ghanshyam Thori.

The night curfew has been imposed under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973 and the National Disaster Management Act, 2005, the order added.

This announcement comes as Punjab has been witnessing an upsurge in the number of fresh COVID-19 cases for nearly a month now.

Jalandhar had reported the maximum 134 new COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours, taking the total active cases to 856. So far, the state has registered 1,86,189 cases and 5,898 deaths, the Health Ministry data shows.

Earlier last month, the Punjab government had authorized deputy commissioners (DCs) to impose night curfew if required in COVID-19 hotspots in their districts.
