Srinagar, Apr 27 (NVI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday stressed the need to develop a strong startup culture in the Union Territory, saying efforts are underway to create a robust ecosystem to support innovation and entrepreneurship.
Speaking to reporters Omar said that while several states have already moved ahead in promoting startups, J&K is working to catch up by learning from their experiences. “It is very important to have a startup culture. Many states have started this before us. We are a little behind them, but we can learn from their experience and avoid repeating their mistakes,” he said.
The Chief Minister highlighted that a startup policy was introduced in 2024 and budgetary support has already been allocated. He added that the government is now focusing on building infrastructure, including incubation centres. “Government College of Engineering Technology has sought an incubation centre, and we will work on it this year,” he said.
Responding to a question on a recent attack on former US President Donald Trump, Omar said violence has no place in politics. “Thank God he survived. No one wants such incidents to happen. No matter the disagreements, they should be expressed verbally, not through harm,” he remarked, adding that Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed such violence in the past and it must not be repeated.
On international developments, he expressed hope for peace and said conflicts should be resolved through dialogue. “There is no justification for war. Efforts must be made to ensure lasting peace,” he said.
Commenting on rail connectivity, the Chief Minister said increased train capacity between Jammu and Srinagar will benefit tourism. “Earlier, only 8-coach trains were operating, now 20-coach trains will run. More passengers will travel, which is a positive development. We want further increase in frequency and capacity,” he added.
Omar said he will also raise key issues related to rail services during an upcoming function, reiterating the government’s focus on improving connectivity and boosting the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir. (NVI)
