Peshawar, May 10: At least 21 Pakistani security personnel have been left dead and three injured in an audacious attack by members of an armed group on a military camp in the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan.

The military camp in Fateh Khel area of Bannu district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province was first hit by a vehicle laden with explosives, apparently by a suicide bomber last night.

As a huge explosion caused by the vehicle hit stunned everyone, a large number of armed men entered the premises and fired indiscriminately besides detonating bombs.

Simultaneously, several armed attackers laid siege of the complex from all sides externally, and ambushed the security personnel trying to reach for help of those inside the premises.

The attackers also reportedly used drones in the attack.

The buildings inside the complex were destroyed due to the explosions.

“A suicide bomber and several fighters detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near a security post. Shortly after, multiple explosions were heard, and the security post collapsed from the impact of the blast,” said a police officer.

Even as the attack was underway, a group calling itself ‘Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan’ claimed responsibility for the assault.

It is said to be an alliance of a number of militant groups active in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

Images showed the complex full of rubble, with bricks, charred wreckage, and mangled vehicles scattered around the area.

A mass funeral was conducted today, with the 21 security personnel being laid to rest.

Three wounded people remain hospitalised.
