New Delhi, Aug 27 (NVI) Even as the extent of death and destruction caused by yesterday’s floods in Nepal keep unfolding, at least 290 Indians remain missing while 63 have been rescued.
The latest update regarding the fate of Indians was provided by the External Affairs Ministry as of 8 PM.
The Ministry spokesman said 290 Indians were “not contactable”.
He said 63 workers of Trishuli-I project were rescued and 21 were from Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, India sent two consignments of relief material to Nepal which is grappling with the mammoth challenge posed by the flood fury in central parts of the country, bordering Tibet.
The consignments, which were airlifted, included medicines and food packets, which were handed over to the government of Nepal.
“India remains committed to standing by Nepal and its people,” the spokesman said.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also held a meeting with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and other senior officials of the MEA, along with Ambassdors in Kathmandu and Beijing, on the Nepal flood disaster.
In a social media post later, Jaishankar said, “urgent efforts are underway to ascertain the status and well-being of all Indians in the flood-affected areas. MEA is coordinating with various Ministries, State governments, tour operators and project authorities in this regard. We are working closely with the Nepali side, both on this aspect and on the relief efforts.” (NVI)
