New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India crossed the 9 million-mark and currently stands at 90,04,366 after 45,882 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,32,162 after 584 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In the worst-affected Maharashtra, COVID-19 confirmed cases increased to 17,63,055 which include 46,356 deaths. The active cases in the state stand at 80,728 and 16,35,971 recoveries.

Coronavirus cases surge past 56.8 million worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): More than 56.8 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll is nearing 13,59,599, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 36.5 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

In the US, the number of coronavirus infections have surpassed 11.7 million while the number of fatalities due to the deadly contagion have crossed 2,52,500.

The US government will extend a ban on non-essential travel at land borders with Canada and Mexico until 21 December. The rules were first introduced in March to stop the virus’ spread, and will be in place for another 20 days. They were due to expire on Saturday.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have exceeded 5.98 million while the number of deaths have surged past 1,68,000 in the country.

Mexico passed the 1,00,000 mark in Covid-19 deaths on Thursday, becoming only the fourth country — behind the United States, Brazil and India — to do so.

Mainland China reported 17 new Covid-19 cases on November 19, up from 12 a day earlier, the country’s health authority said on Friday.

Meanhwile, Chinese President Xi Jinping is calling for closer international cooperation on making a vaccine for the coronavirus available, as his government announces that the vaccine developed by state-owned pharmaceutical company SinoPharm has been administered to 1m people.

Northern Ireland faces two weeks of tougher lockdown restrictions from the end of next week, as non-essential retail will also close.

Iran’s death toll from the new coronavirus outbreak has risen to 43,418, with 476 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Furthermore, Remdesivir, one of the drugs Donald Trump took when he developed Covid-19, should not be used in hospitals because there is no evidence it works, the World Health Organization (WHO) has advised.

14 people killed in UP road accident

New Delhi (NVI): Around 14 people, including six children were killed in a tragic road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh on late Thursday night.

The incident took place at spot on the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway at around 11:45 pm which falls under limits of Manikpur police station, according to the reports.

Notably, the accident occurred when a SUV collided with a truck which was parked on the highway. All the deceased were returning after attending a wedding function in Nababganj area.

Later, the area police recovered the bodies from the vehicle which was in a mangled state under the truck.

Following the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the accident and has directed senior officials to reach the spot and provide all possible help to victims, the Chief Minister Office (CMO) stated.

India’s COVID tally crosses 9 million; death toll tops 1.32 lakh

New Delhi (NVI): India coronavirus tally has crossed the 9 million mark and currently stands at 90,04,366, with a single-day rise of 45,882 cases in last 24 hours, Union Health Ministry said.

The country’s death toll due to the virus rose to 1,32,162, with 584 patients succumbing to the infection since yesterday

Notably, a total of 84,28,410 patients have been cured or discharged so far, while the active cases stands at 4,43,794, as per the ministry data.

With this, the national recovery rate stood at 93.58 per cent, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.47 per cent in the country.

In the worst-affected Maharashtra, COVID-19 confirmed cases increased to 17,63,055 which include 46,356 deaths. The active cases in the state stand at 80,728 and 16,35,971 recoveries.

Maharashra is followed by Karnataka (8,67,780), Andhra Pradesh (8,58,711), Tamil Nadu (7,64,989), Kerala (5,45,641) and Uttar Pradesh (5,19,148).

Meanwhile, the national capital has registered 5,10,630 COVID-19 cases, while 8,041 people have died of the virus in Delhi.

Over 12.95 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to November 19. Of these 10,83,397 samples were tested yesterday, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data.

Furthermore, the new coronavirus recoveries continue to overtake the daily new cases continuously since the past 47 days, the Health Ministry said.

Stranded Indian seafarer, who escaped pirates near Nigera, set to return home

New Delhi (NVI): A seafarer from Andhra Pradesh, who escaped Somalian pirates aboard a ship near Nigeria last year, is all set to return home as he was released yesterday after Foreign Minister S Jaishankar discussed the matter with his Nigerian counterpart Geoffrey Onyeama.

The Indian Embassy in Nigeria today tweeted on the development. The seafarer identified as Shankar Rao was stranded on the oil vessel ‘MT Apecus’ at Bonny Island near Nigeria since last year.

“Glad to inform that due to our sustained efforts, seafarer Shankar Rao, stranded on MT Apecus at Bonny Island since last year, was safely released yesterday. EAM @DrSJaishankar had discussed it with FM @GeoffreyOnyeama. We thank @NigeriaGov for all legal and security assistance,” the Indian embassy in Nigeria tweeted.

24-year-old Rao had also written to director-general of shipping in India, Amitabh Kumar, to help him out.

Five Indian crew members were kidnapped by the pirates on the oil tanker on April 19 last year. Shankar Rao hid in the engine room. The five kidnapped Indian were released after nearly two months on June 27 after spending 70 days in captivity.

India to send Sikh jatha to Nankana Sahib in Pak from Nov 27 to Dec 1: MEA

New Delhi (NVI): The Ministry of External Affairs today said that a Sikh jatha (religious group) from India will visit Gurdwara Nankana Sahib in Pakistan from November 27 to December 1 on the occasion of the 551st birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev.

While responding to a question whether Kartarpur corridor will be opened up for the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak, MEA spokesman Anurag Srivastava said Indian Sikh pilgrims will only be allowed to visit Nankana Sahib in Pakistan.

“It has been decided that a Sikh Jatha from India will visit Janam Asthan Gurdwara Nankana Sahib from November 27 to December 1, 2020 on the occasion of the 551st birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. This visit will be as per the 1974 bilateral Protocol on visit to Religious Shrines between India and Pakistan,” he said.

Srivastava further said that in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, all health-related Protocol will be strictly followed, and the size of the Jatha is, therefore, likely to be reduced.

However, the MEA spokesman didn’t elaborate on the opening of the Kartarpur corridor that is yet to be opened by the Central government. The corridor was closed on March 16 to contain the spread of Covid pandemic.

The government had also temporarily suspended the registration for Kartarpur Sahib pilgrimage done through a dedicated website www.prakashpurb550.mha.gov.in.

The corridor was inaugurated on November 9, 2019, to facilitate Sikh pilgrims from India who wanted to visit the shrine located in Narowal district of Pakistan. The shrine is a few kilometres from the international border.

On October 2, Pakistan had unilaterally opened the corridor to Indian devotees but did not get a response from India.

However, many Sikhs have been asking the Pakistan government to issue liberal visas, despite the opening of the corridor.

Earlier this month, India had condemned the Pakistan government’s decision of transferring the management and maintenance of the Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara to the administrative control of the Evacuee Trust Property Board, a non-Sikh body.

The MEA had also summoned the Pakistan High Commission Charge d’Affaires (CDA) and lodged a strong protest over the matter.

“It was also conveyed to him that this unilateral decision by Pakistan is highly condemnable and runs against the spirit of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor as also the religious sentiments of the Sikh community at large,” MEA spokesman Anurag Srivastava had said.

Pak court sentences 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed to 10 yrs in jail in 2 terror cases

New Delhi (NVI): An anti-terror court in Lahore has awarded 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind and Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed a 10 years prison term in connection with two terror cases.

Saeed, a UN-designated terrorist is already in jail since February this year, as he was sentenced to 11 years in jail in two other terror-financing cases. The JuD chief is currently lodged at Lahore’s high-security Kot Lakhpat jail.

Saeed and his two close aides – Zafar Iqbal and Yahya Mujahid – have been sentenced to 10 and a half years each. The JuD chief’s brother-in-law Abdul Rehman Makki was sentenced to six months imprisonment.

Hafiz Saeed is wanted on the most wanted list in India for planning 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in which 10 terrorists killed 166 people including six US citizens.

Notably, The US Department of the Treasury has designated Saeed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

The 26/11 mastermind was arrested in Pakistan in July last year in connection with terror-financing cases after international pressure built on Islamabad.

The global terror financing watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is has also been building pressure on Pakistan to take measures against terrorists using its territory to carry out attacks in India and other parts of the world.

PAGD a conspiracy of political parties against people of J&K: Naqvi

Srinagar (NVI): Terming People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) as a “conspiracy of political parties against the people of the J&K”, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today said that the alliance will prove to be a “dying declaration” for “dynastic and destructive politics” in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The people were deprived of political rights only because of Article 370 and 35A. The dynasty rule in J&K kept people away from the mainstream as well as unaware of the constitutional rights,” Naqvi said while addressing the party workers at Tourist Reception Center (TRC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Taking a dig at the PAGD, he said, “All the parties are contesting the elections including those who claimed that they won’t contest the polls unless the August 5 decision is reversed. The alliance is the death of politics in Jammu and Kashmir and the amalgam will try to keep J&K away from development and prosperity.”

The alliance is a conspiracy against J&K people and they’ve got engulfed into their ill-thoughts, he added.

“DDC election will send a clear and loud message that the people of J&K are now part of dignity, development, rights and all this will be fulfilled by BJP,” he said, adding that it was the time when BJP will make people understand that the time and atmosphere has changed and the people at present are happy and are looking forward.

He further said, “890 rules were not applicable in J&K including the no reservation for Gujjars and Bakerwals but following the abrogation of the Article 370 and 35A, the funds from the central government are directly being utilized in J&K.”

“Schemes are also being implemented regularly,” the Union Minister said, adding that the development with dignity is the way forward. “I assure you that all the problems and challenges people were facing earlier, will be eliminated in the times to come.”

On the issue of the eviction and demolition drive of Gujjars’ and Bakerwals’ homes in parts of UT, Naqvi said that no one can be allowed to disobey the forest land law.

“No one will force the Gujjar community to leave the forests. Whosoever is living within forests will remain there,” he said.

New Delhi (NVI): The defence cooperation and partnership between India and Bangladesh has made significant gains in the last few years, and the strategic partnership between the two countries can become pillar of regional strength and economic cooperation, a senior Defence Ministry official said today.

“This may result in a long-term strategic partnership in production, development and maintenance. It will be a win-win situation for both the nations to achieve their common objectives. The strategic partnership between India-Bangladesh can become a pillar of regional strength and economic cooperation,” said Raj Kumar, Secretary, Defence Production, Ministry of Defence.

Kumar was addressing a virtual session ‘India and Bangladesh-Make for the World,’ organized by FICCI, jointly with the High Commission of India, Bangladesh and Ministry of Defence.

The secretary noted that the close proximity of Indian shipyards to Bangladesh is an additional advantage for both the nations.

He said that India has a robust ship building industry with an ecosystem of world class public and private ship building companies. “The ships constructed by Indian shipyards are of global standards and are extremely cost effective. Our shipyards are also willing to partner with Bangladeshi shipyards for construction of platforms as per Bangladesh requirements through JVs, co-development and collaboration for both commercial and defence requirements,” he added.

Highlighting opportunities in the defence sector, Kumar stated that Bangladesh armed forces is looking for suppliers for its ambitious military modernization drive called Forces Goal 2030. Indian defence industry has been galvanized through progressive policies and procedural reforms, which has catapulted the industry to serve not only the Indian but global requirements as well, he added.

“India has a vast defence industrial base of 41 Indian ordnance factories, 9 defence PSUs, along with a vibrant private sector and over 12,000 MSMEs. Indian defence industries can offer various proven hi-tech platforms, systems, sub-systems in air, land, sea, and space applications. India can offer MRO facilities to Bangladesh and with its proven expertise in software, India can offer technological solutions in the digital field as well,” Kumar said.

India, he said, has also extended a defence line of credit of US$ 500 million to Bangladesh that is already operational. We are keen to work with Bangladesh for platforms like Akash, radars, mortars, artillery guns, ammunitions etc., he emphasised.

Also present in the session, Sanjay Jaju, Additional Secretary (DP), Ministry of Defence, said that the Indian defence sector has a lot of potential and further invited Bangladeshi companies to invest in this sector.

“We have opened up two defence industrial corridors in UP and Tamil Nadu and both corridors will leverage existing ordnance factories and private manufactures in the region. We invite investments from Bangladesh in these corridors and explore opportunities where we can co-produce and co-develop equipment for mutual use,” he said.

Ahmedabad imposes night curfew

New Delhi (NVI): Due to the rising number of coronavirus cases, the Ahmedabad administration has decided to impose night curfew in the city. The curfew will be imposed from 9 pm to 6 am.

The curfew will come into effect from Friday and will stay on till further orders.

The administration also stated that there are adequate number of beds available for COVID-19 patients in city hospitals.

Furthermore, the number of micro containment areas in the city saw a rise with 14 such areas added to the list, taking the total to 100, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said.

So far, Ahmedabad has reported 46,022 coronavirus cases with 220 cases being reported in the last 24 hours.

With five more deaths, the fatalities in the district rose to 1,949, according to Health Ministry data.
