State-wise details of Covid-19 cases in India

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed the 89 lakh-mark and stands at 89,58,484 after 45,576 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,31,578 after 585 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the coronavirus cases climbed to 17,57,520 followed by Karnataka with 8,65,931 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 8,57,395 positive cases.

Delhi’s air quality fall back to ‘poor’ category from ‘moderate’

New Delhi (NVI): The national capital’s air quality goes back into the “poor” category this morning after remaining in “moderate” level for past few days, with a change in the wind direction.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi recorded an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 272 at around 9 am, which falls in the ‘poor’ category.

The AQI at 305 was recorded in Anand Vihar, 334 in Dwarka, 195 in Lodhi road, 231 in Mathura Road, 301 in Bawana, 290 in Patparganj, 232 in Wazirpur, 290 in ITO, and 287 in RK Puram, all areas were found to be in the ‘very poor’ and ‘poor’ category.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

Earlier, the city’s AQI was recorded in the “moderate” category on Wednesday morning. The 24-hour average AQI stood at 211, which was 171 on Tuesday. However, pollution levels increased by a bit as the day progressed.

Moreover, the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ air quality monitoring agency, SAFAR said that, “Delhi-NCR’s air quality is likely to remain in the moderate and the lower end of the poor category on Thursday and Friday.”

SAFAR added that it may deteriorate to the lower end of the ‘very poor’ category on Friday and Saturday, as the favourable weather conditions created after rainfall is slowly retreating .

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the minimum temperature settled at 9.4 degrees Celsius this morning the lowest this season so far.

Londoners most fed up with city life amid coronavirus crisis: Survey

New Delhi (NVI): The virus crisis has made Londoners more disillusioned with city life than people in other major European centres, new survey suggests.

A survey of over 5,000 residents across London, Paris, Madrid, Berlin and Milan by engineering firm Arup showed that half of those questioned in the UK capital complained that amenities were too far away.

Arup’s survey was based on the concept that city dwellers enjoy a better quality of life when essential facilities are within a 15-minute walking or cycling distance from home.

According to the survey findings, Londoners are furthest from this ideal, as on average, they live a 23-minute walk or cycle away from essential services, such as parks, grocery shops, schools, medical facilities, leisure centres, gyms and cafes.

Whereas, the distance was just 13 minutes in Madrid and Milan and around 16 minutes in Berlin and Paris.

Furthermore, Londoners also have to travel the farthest to get to a park, field or playing area, compared with their European counterparts, the study indicated.

Three in five Londoners questioned said they have considered leaving the capital due to Covid-19, more than Paris (41%), Milan (39%), Madrid (37%) and Berlin (30%), said Arup.

Two fifths of Londoners temporarily moved out of the city at some point during the pandemic to live somewhere less populated, more than in the other cities in the report.

Meanhwile, European city dwellers generally have seen some improvements to life during the pandemic, including less traffic and a reduction of air pollution as well as having more time to spend with their children, said the report.

Malcolm Smith, Arup’s global master planning and urban design leader, said, “The pandemic has brought us closer to the vision of the 15-minute city as, for many, it has cut out the commute.”

He said, “It has shone a light on the importance of developing cities in smaller modules, with essential services concentrated around community hubs.”

New Delhi (NVI): The nation paid homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi today on the occasion of her 103rd birth anniversary.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were among those who paid tributes to Indira Gandhi.

Taking to Twitter, Rahul Gandhi shared a throwback picture of Indira Gandhi and wrote, “I pay my tribute on the birth anniversary of Smt Indira Gandhi, an efficient Prime Minister and form of power.”

“While the entire nation, even today, speaks of her impressive leadership, I always remember her as my beloved grandmother. Things she taught me inspire me every day,” he tweeted in Hindi.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said, “Tributes to former PM Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary.”

Meanwhile, the official handle of the Indian National Congress recalled her as a trail blazer, visionary and true leader.

“A trailblazer, a visionary, a true leader and a great daughter of our motherland, Indira Gandhi was much more than a Prime Minister to our citizens; she was the revitalising strength in their quest for greatness and prosperity. Today, we pay a proud tribute to India’s Indira,” the party tweeted.

Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917 in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad. She served as the first and only women Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977.

She was the third Prime Minister and the second longest-serving after her father Jawaharlal Nehru and then again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984.

Coronavirus cases surpass 56.2 mn worldwide; US death toll tops 2.50 lakh

New Delhi (NVI): More than 56.2 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll is nearing 13,49,339, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 36.1 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

In the US, the number of coronavirus infections have surpassed 11.5 million while the number of fatalities due to the deadly contagion have crossed 2,50,000.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have exceeded 5.94 million while the number of deaths have surged past 1,67,000 in the country.

India has added another 45,576 new cases of the coronavirus, taking its total infections to 8.96 million, data from the health ministry said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases in Germany increased by 22,609 to 8,55,916. The reported death toll rose by 251 to 13,370, the tally showed.

South Korea reported 343 new coronavirus cases by Wednesday midnight, bringing the country’s total infections to 29,654 with 498 deaths.

The country has kicked off a special two-week coronavirus prevention period on Thursday as the country’s daily infections tallies continued to mount ahead of highly competitive annual college entrance exams.

Furthermore, Mexico’s health ministry has reported 3,918 new confirmed coronavirus infections in the country and 502 deaths as of Wednesday, bringing the official totals to 1,015,071 cases and 99,528 dead.

The list of countries that have kept the novel coronavirus pandemic from their borders has reduced by one more: Samoa has recorded its first positive test for Covid-19.

New Delhi (NVI): India has registered 45,576 new infections of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall caseload to 89,58,484, the Ministry of Health said.

The country’s death toll has gone up to 1,31,578 with 585 fatalities reported within past 24 hours.

So far, 83,83,603 patients have been cured and recovered all over the country, while active COVID-19 cases remained below 4.5 lakh mark and currently stands at 4,43,303.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the coronavirus cases climbed to 17,57,520 followed by Karnataka with 8,65,931 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 8,57,395 positive cases.

Other states with a high virus hit included Tamil Nadu (7,63,282) Kerala (5,39,919) and Uttar Pradesh (5,16,616).

Meanwhile, of the total deaths, Maharashtra again tops the tally with 46,202 fatalities, followed by 11,578 in Karnataka and 11,531 in Tamil Nadu.

The total coronavirus cases in Delhi surpassed 5 lakh and stood at 5,03,084 with 7,486 fresh COVID-19 cases, while the death toll in the national capital rose to 7,943, the healthy ministry data shows

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, more than 12.85 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to November 18. Of these 10,28,203 samples were tested yesterday.

Furthermore, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal will hold the all-party meeting today to discuss the COVID-19 situation in the capital, as opposition parties said that they would raise issues like inadequate testing and press for proper enforcement of precautionary measures.

4 JeM terrorists killed, 2 SOG cops injured in encounter in Jammu’s Nagrota

Jammu (NVI): Four Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces early this morning near Ban toll plaza in Nagrota district of Jammu on Jammu-Srinagar Highway, security officials said.

The gunfight which started at around 5 am, also led to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar highway, they said, adding that 11 weapons were also recovered along with other explosives.

Army’s PRO is Udhampur identified the terrorists from Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit. “Pakistan based terrorist Group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) is based at Bahawalpur in Pakistan and is exploiting the International Boundary area in Punjab –Jammu sector to infiltrate maximum terrorists,” read one of the tweets by Udhampur based PRO.


Earlier, IGP Jammu also tweeted on the killing of four ultras. “Four terrorists have been neutralised and one police constable has been injured in an encounter at Ban Toll Plaza, Jammu with police, CRPF and Army. Area is being sanitised.”

Meanwhile, two special operations group (SOG) cops from Jammu and Kashmir police were also injured in the encounter.

The security officials also said that the gunbattle started near the toll plaza in Ban area of Nagrota when some terrorists, hiding in a truck opened fire at police and paramilitary forces after the vehicle was stopped for checking.

Later, the Army also joined the operation. The two SOG personnel injured have been hospitalized.

The injured personnel have been identified as Kuldeep Raj and Mohammad Ishaq Malik. Both have been admitted in GMC hospital in Jammu with injuries on neck and their condition is said to be stable, the officials said.

CRPF officials also said, “J&K Police and CRPF received input about the movement of militants from Samba sector towards Nagrota Toll Plaza. They were trapped and eliminated. Total 11 AK-47 rifles have been recovered.”

Western air commander visits frontline air base in Jammu

Jammu (NVI): Western Air Commander, Air Marshal VR Chaudhari visited frontline air base in Jammu and reviewed the operational preparedness, days after a huge flare-up at the Line of Control in J&K after Pakistan attempted a BAT (Border Action Team) like attack and shelled multiple sectors at LoC.

Air Marshal Chaudhari was received by Air Commodore Ajay Singh Pathania, Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station Jammu, on his arrival and was apprised of the operational readiness of the base and its ability to undertake the assigned operational tasks under their command.

The AOC-in-C also met and interacted with air warriors of the station and its lodger units during the course of his visit.

He lauded the focussed efforts put in by the station in maintaining proficiency in all roles envisaged and urged them to continue performing their duty with due diligence, PIB’s Defence Wing said in a statement.

The Western Air Commander’s visit to Jammu comes amid a rise in unprovoked ceasefire violation at LoC and the recent intense shelling in which five defence personnel and four civilians lost their lives. The Indian Army had also killed four Pakistani Army commandos in Kupwara’s Keran sector near LoC.

The SSG commandos, who wanted to carry out a BAT (Border Action Team) attack belonged to 2 SSG Unit located at Sharda Valley in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

According to some reports, around 11 Pakistan Army personnel are believed to have been killed in retaliatory action by Indian Army, besides the 4 SSG commandos.

The 11 Pakistani troops are believed to be killed by the Indian Army while blasting several Pak bunkers across LoC by using rockets and ATGMs (Anti Tank Guided Missiles).

Leasing model in Def acquisition may reduce short-term capability gaps: Navy

New Delhi (NVI): The Indian Navy is mulling to lease assets like trainer aircraft and light helicopters on a short-term basis to mitigate critical operational capabilities gap, the Vice Chief of Naval Staff said today.

While addressing the eSymposium on ‘Leveraging Leasing For Force Level Maintenance & Modernization’, organized by FICCI, Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar said that introducing leasing model in the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP 2020) is a path-breaking procedural change.

“It provides the option to reduce short-term capability gaps considering the long gestation period of ship building contracts,” he said.

“For Indian Navy, we will look towards leasing operational support assets and auxiliaries to enhance our operational capabilities and avoid huge investments in manning and maintaining them.” The Indian Navy is planning to lease certain assets in the medium term to mitigate critical operational capabilities gap, he added.

He further said that the Indian Navy may also look at operational enablers like utility helicopters and unmanned solutions for operational preparedness of the Navy.

Vice Admiral Kumar stated that future requirements of Indian Defence also include capabilities such as space-based surveillance, robust communication networks integrated with AI, modern aircraft, etc. “Capability building is a long term and evolving process that includes industrial capability, management of technology and budget for modernization,” he said.

Vice Admiral Kumar also said that they are also continuously working to identify and mitigate the capability gaps through innovative methods and one such option can be leasing of assets. To meet the emerging challenges and responsibilities, there is a wide range of operational capabilities envisaged, he noted.

Elaborating on the merits of leasing model, Vice Admiral Kumar said that it enables further focus on core competence, removes technological complexities, lowers manpower cost for maintenance thereby reducing the overall cost for acquiring an asset.

Highlighting the opportunity in leasing he urged the industry to have and maintain a long-term outlook in this sector. “If the requirements of the three services can be met through leasing provisions, it would be a win-win situation for the Indian industry and the armed forces,” said Vice Admiral Kumar.

The on-going modernisation process, he said, aims to create capabilities to accomplish a range of missions. A wide variety of such capabilities can now be covered through the provision of leasing and Indian industry can play an important role in meeting these requirements, he added.

Also present on the occasion, Gargi Kaul, Former Secretary Defence Finance, Ministry of Defence, said that the addition of leasing as a new chapter in the Defence Acquisition Procedure is a welcome step. She further added that though leasing in India is still low and there is a need to further modify the existing rules in the DAP.

Admiral RK Dhowan (Retd), Former Chief of Naval Staff; Chairperson, Society for Aerospace, Maritime and Defence Studies (SAMDeS) said that the Defence Acquisition Procedure will ensure a smooth transition through interim mechanism of leasing. We should aim for capacity building and capability enhancement of our armed forces, to increase operational efficiency through leasing.

SP Shukla, Chairman, FICCI Defence and Aerospace Committee and Group President (Defence, Aero, Agri and Steel); Member of the Group Executive Board, Mahindra Group highlighted that there are many countries which have their own leasing models and India should also develop its own model.

J&K DDC polls: ANC leader accuses BJP of creating troubles for PAGD candidates

Srinagar (NVI): Awami National Conference (ANC) Vice President Muzaffar Shah today alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was creating troubles for the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) candidates ahead of the District Development Council (DDC) polls.

He said the BJP was trying to stop PAGD candidates from contesting the polls. He also accused the returning officer of a district development council (DDC) constituency in Khanmoh of bias.

He said, “It is a conspiracy and BJP is trying hard to stop PAGD candidates from contesting the elections. The returning officer tried to reject the nomination of our candidate a few hours after accepting it.”

“The nomination of our candidate was accepted after scrutiny at 12:15 pm (on Tuesday). He was authorised to open a bank account and an expenditure register was also handed over to him. Then around 5 pm, he was called to the office only to be informed that his form was not accepted,” Shah said while addressing a press conference here.

“The same officer has earlier written accepted on his form, later prefixed ‘not’ to accepted and even tried to write ‘rejected’,” he added.

Shah was accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement (JKPMM) president Javaid Mustafa Mir.

ANC and JKPMM are both part of the PAGD and the amalgam had given the mandate to contest the DDC polls from Khanmoh constituency.

While urging Election Commission’s intervention, he termed it as “a blot on the election process”.

“This is a forgery. It is a blot on the whole election system and the chief election commissioner should take action immediately,” he said.

The DDC elections in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to be begin from November 28.
