New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed the 88 lakh-mark and stands at 88,74,291 after 29,164 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,30,519 after 449 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the coronavirus cases climbed to 17,49,777 followed by Karnataka with 8,62,804 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 8,54,764 positive cases.

Coronavirus cases surge past 54.9 million worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): More than 54.9 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll is nearing 13,26,768, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 35.2 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

In the US, the number of coronavirus infections have surpassed 11.2 million while the number of fatalities due to the deadly contagion have crossed 2,47,000.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have exceeded 5.8 million while the number of deaths have surged past 1,66,000 in the country.

Meanwhile, daily coronavirus infections in India fell to their lowest since mid-July, with 29,163 new cases reported for the last 24 hours, taking the total to 8.87 million, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 14,419 to 8,15,746. The reported death toll rose by 267 to 12,814, the tally showed.

South Africa on Monday recorded 1,245 new coronavirus cases and 73 further deaths. The caseload stands at 7,52,269, while 20,314 people have died.

South Korea will impose stricter social distancing rules for the greater Seoul area a month after easing them, officials said on Tuesday, warning of an even bigger crisis if anti-Covid-19 efforts fail to dampen a spike in new cases.

The tougher restrictions came as the daily case tally hovered above 200 for a fourth consecutive day, with a series of cluster outbreaks emerging from offices, medical facilities and small gatherings in Seoul and surrounding regions where around half of the country’s 52 million population live.

In a positive update, the Australian state of Victoria has recorded its 18th day without a new coronavirus case or death.

India’s COVID tally over 88.7 lakh with 29,164 new cases

New Delhi (NVI): India has registered 29,164 new infections of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall caseload to 88,74,291, according to the Ministry of Health.

This is for the first time in past four months when daily coronavirus cases are less than 30,000 in a day.

The country’s death toll has gone up to 1,30,519 with 449 fatalities reported within past 24 hours.

Notably, 82,90,371 patients have been cured and recovered all over the country, while active COVID-19 cases remained below 5-lakh mark and currently stands at 4,53,401.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the coronavirus cases climbed to 17,49,777 followed by Karnataka with 8,62,804 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 8,54,764 positive cases.

Other states with a high virus hit included Tamil Nadu (7,59,916) Kerala (5,27,708) and Uttar Pradesh (5,12,850).

Meanwhile, of the total deaths, Maharashtra again tops the tally with 46,034 fatalities, followed by 11,541in Karnataka and 11,495 in Tamil Nadu.

The total coronavirus cases in Delhi reached to 4,89,202, while the death toll in the national capital rose to 7,713 the healthy ministry data shows.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, more than 12.65 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to November 16. Of these 8,44,382 samples were tested yesterday.

Furthermore, Delhi Health Minister Sastyendar Jain yesterday said there was no chance of another lockdown in the national capital, adding that Delhi had already witnessed its third peak of COVID-19 infections.

2 suspected JeM terrorists arrested in Delhi

New Delhi (NVI): Delhi Police has arrested two suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists last night and foiled a major attack in the national capital.

The Special Cell of Delhi Police made the arrests to prevent a major terror attack in Delhi.

Both the terrorists, who were arrested from Sarai Kale Khan area of Delhi, are now being questioned by police officials.

“Two suspected terrorists have been apprehended along with 2 semi-automatic pistols and 10 live cartridges,” said police officials.

The terrorists, both residents of Jammu and Kashmir and in their early 20s, are linked to terror group of Jaish-e-Mohammad. They have been identified as Abdul Latif Mir and Mohammad Ashraf Khatana.

According to the officials, a trap was laid near Millennium Park in Sarai Kale Khan around 10.15 pm last night and the duo was held.

Moderna Covid-19 vaccine found to be 94.4% effective

New Delhi (NVI): According to data released by US-based Moderna, a Covid vaccine by the biotechnology company is 94.5 per cent effective at preventing coronavirus.

With this, Moderna Inc. has become the second US company to release data from a large study of its experimental vaccine.

“It was one of the greatest moments in my life and my career. It is absolutely amazing to be able to develop this vaccine and see the ability to prevent symptomatic disease with such high efficacy,” Dr. Tal Zacks, Moderna’s chief medical officer was quoted as saying by CNN.

According to reports, vaccinations could begin in the second half of December and are expected to begin with high-risk groups. They are expected to be available for the rest of the population next spring.

Another pharma company, Pfizer had announced last week that early data show its vaccine is more than 90% effective against the disease.

In Moderna’s trial, 15,000 study participants were given a placebo, which is a shot of saline that has no effect. Over several months, 90 of them developed Covid-19, with 11 developing severe forms of the disease, a CNN report said.

Another 15,000 participants were given the vaccine, and only five of them developed Covid-19. None of the five became severely ill, it said.

As per Moderna Inc. its vaccine did not have any serious side effects. A small percentage of those who received it experienced symptoms such as body aches and headaches.

Meanwhile, the company plans to apply to the US Food and Drug Administration for authorization of its vaccine soon after it accumulates more safety data later this month.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that he expects the first Covid-19 vaccinations to begin in late December.

CNN reported that there won’t be enough vaccine for everyone initially and that the health care workers, elderly, and people with underlying medical conditions, will get the vaccine first.

J&K DDC polls: 10 candidates withdraw nominations from Shopian

Shopian (NVI): Ten candidates have withdrawn their nomination papers for J&K District Development Council (DDC) polls from South Kashmir’s Shopian.

According to officials, on the last date of withdrawal today, ten candidates out of 91 for DDC Sarpanch and Panch seats withdrew their nominations from Shopian.

“One DDC candidate and nine candidates fighting for Panch seats have withdrawn their nomination papers,” they said.

DDC elections will be conducted in eight phases between Nov 28 and Dec 19; counting will take place on December 22.

Meanwhile, R R Bhatnagar, advisor to J&K LG and Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh today reviewed the security plans and preparedness in Central Kashmir for the upcoming DDC polls and by-elections for Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies (ULB) in a meeting.

The meeting was attended by IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, IG CRPF, Charu Sinha, DIG CKR, Amit Kumar, DIG CRPF South Srinagar, DS Maan, DIG CRPF, North Srinagar Dr. D.J Singh, DIG Sector Hqr, CRPF Ashok Samyal, SSP Srinagar, Dr. M. Haseeb Mughal, SSP Budgam Nagpure Amod Ashok, SSP Ganderbal Khalil Ahmad Poswal and Nodal commandants of Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal.

Bhatnagar said that they appreciate Jammu and Kashmir Police and other forces in maintaining peace, stability, and law and order in J&K.

He also reiterated the importance of maintaining a close watch on the inimical elements.
“The need is to maintain real-time coordination between different security agencies for the peaceful conduct of the elections,” he said.

DGP Dilbagh Singh, while speaking on the occasion said that there is a need to be more vigilant and cautious in view of the possibility of terrorists attempting to disrupt the democratic process in J&K, saying that continuous attempts are being made by inimical elements across the border.

He also directed the officers to devise security plans and depute the security personnel as per the requirement. He emphasized making the effective use of drones to monitor the situation in and around the polls stations.

Pak violates ceasefire in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara

Srinagar (NVI): Just days after a major flare-up at the LoC, Pakistani troops resorted to yet another ceasefire violation this evening in Tangdhar sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, defence officials said.

“Pakistan initiated an unprovoked Ceasefire Violation along LoC in Tangdhar Sector, Kupwara District today evening by firing mortars & other weapons,” they said adding that a “befitting response is being given” by the Indian Army.

Pakistan has been deliberately trying to push terrorists under this side of fence by firing with small and light arms. On Friday, which Pakistan shelled multiple areas along LoC, in which five defence personnel were killed while four civilians also lost their lives.

Pakistan resorted to the heavy shelling at LoC on November 13 after the Indian Army foiled another infiltration bid by the four Pak commandos in Kupwara’s Keran sector. While the four Pakistani commandos were killed by the Indian forces, some reports said that the retaliatory attacks by the Indian army eliminated 11 more Pakistani troops across LoC.

Yesterday, while paying tributes to slain BSF officer Rakesh Dobhal, who was killed during the heavy Pak shelling, BSF IG Rajesh Mishra said that Pakistan used heavy artillery and modern weapons while deliberately targeting civilians.

Covid vaccine alone will not end pandemic: WHO chief

New Delhi (NVI): World Health Organisation (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus today said that a vaccine alone will not be enough to end the Covid-19 pandemic as it would “complement” the existing tools, not “replace” them.

Taking to Twitter, Tedros said that a vaccine on its own will not end the pandemic and that the world would need to continue with surveillance, testing, isolating and caring for cases, tracing and quarantining contacts, engaging communities, and encouraging individuals to be careful.

“Since the beginning of the #COVID19 pandemic, we knew that a vaccine would be essential for bringing the pandemic under control. But it’s important to emphasise that a vaccine will complement the other tools we have, not replace them. #EB147 #ACTogether,” the WHO chief said in a series of tweets.

He added that initial supply of Covid vaccines will be limited, so health workers, older people and other at-risk populations will be prioritised. “That will hopefully reduce the number of deaths & enable health systems to cope, but the virus will still have a lot room to move. #EB147,” he said.

The WHO chief’s remarks came on a day when more than 54.3 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the disease, while the death toll is nearing 13,17,131. Over 34.9 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

Meanwhile, India today registered 30,548 cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall tally to 88,45,127, according to the Ministry of Health.

J&K: Grenade hurled at police post in Kulgam

New Delhi (NVI): Unknown persons hurled a grenade at a police post in Frisal area of Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir this evening, police officials said.

The incident took place at 6:12 PM. However, no loss of life or injury was reported, as the grenade missed the target and exploded outside the building of the police post, they said.

While taking the advantage of darkness, militants fled from the spot, they added.

Meanwhile, the whole area has been cordoned off and search operations have been launched to nab those behind the attack.

Haryana governor tests COVID positive

New Delhi (NVI): Haryana governor, Satyadev Narayan Arya, was admitted to Fortis Hospital on Monday after testing positive for Covid-19.

Arya, 83, complained of chest infection and has been admitted in the ICU.

Haryana Chief Minister M L Khattar in a tweet wished Arya a speedy recovery.

Earlier, CM Khattar, Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, some of their ministerial colleagues, Haryana Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta had contracted the infection and subsequently recovered from it.
