New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed the 85 lakh-mark and stands at 85,91,731 after 38,074 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,27,059 after 448 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In worst-affected Maharashtra, the coronavirus cases climbed to 17,23,135 followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Brazil health regulator suspends Chinese-made vaccine trials

New Delhi (NVI): Brazil has suspended clinical trials of China’s CoronaVac vaccine, long expected to be one of the first to be approved in the country, following a severe adverse event involving a volunteer recipient, health regulator Anvisa said.

The regulator, Anvisa, said in a statement that it had “ruled to interrupt the clinical trial of the CoronaVac vaccine after a serious adverse incident” on October 29.

It said it could not give details on what happened because of privacy regulations, but that such incidents included death, potentially fatal side effects, serious disability, hospitalization, birth defects and other “clinically significant events.”

The potential vaccine is being developed by Chinese biopharmaceutical firm Sinovac and in Brazil would be mostly produced by Sao Paulo’s state-run Butantan Institute.

Anvisa said in its statement that the event prompting the trial’s suspension occurred Oct. 29, without saying what transpired.

With the interruption of the study, no new volunteer can be vaccinated, the statement read.

Temporary halts of drug and vaccine testing are relatively common. In research involving thousands of participants, some are likely to fall ill. Pausing a study allows researchers to investigate whether an illness is a side effect or a coincidence.

Reportedly, CoronaVac is being tested in seven Brazilian states, plus the federal district where the capital Brasilia lies.

Last month, two drugmakers resumed testing of their prospective coronavirus vaccines in the United States after they were halted earlier.

No respite for Delhi as air quality continues to be in ‘severe’ category

New Delhi (NVI): The national capital continues to reel under air pollution as the air quality index stood in the ‘severe’ category for sixth consecutive day with the AQI recorded at 474 this morning.

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the AQI is at 469 in ITO, 489 in Narela, 497 in Sector 51, Gurugram, and 480 in Sector 62, Noida, all in the ‘severe category’.

As the national capital’s air quality deteriorated, visibility remained poor fed by smoke from farm fires in neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.

The city’s overall air quality index (AQI) stood at 487 at around 9 am, as per the CPCB data.

However, the AQI stood at 477 on Monday, the highest since November 3 last year when it was 494. Its 24-hour average AQI was 416 on Sunday, 427 on Saturday, 406 on Friday and 450 on Thursday.

An AQI between 0-50 is marked good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor and 401-500 is considered severe.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ air monitoring agency SAFAR said, PM2.5 has now become the lead pollutant instead of PM10 as a characteristic of wintertime.

Officials at the monitoring stations informed that, calm wind speeds were worsening the effect of stubble burning and a quick recovery is not possible unless the number of farm fires reduces drastically.

Furthermore, to tackle air pollution the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR from November 9 midnight to November 30.

New Delhi (NVI): More than 50.8 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll is nearing 12,62,622, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 33.2 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

In the US, the number of coronavirus infections have surged past 10.1 million while the number of fatalities due to the deadly contagion are nearing 2,40,000 in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed 5.67 million while the death toll has exceeded 1,62,000.

Australia has gone three days without any locally acquired cases of Covid-19. All cases have been detected in quarantined locals who have recently returned from overseas.

The World Health Organization’s chief on Monday asked everyone to keep fighting Covid-19, warning that while we may be sick of battling the pandemic, the virus is “not tired of us”.

Italy will ramp up coronavirus restrictions in Tuscany and four other regions from Wednesday to rein in the second wave of the pandemic.

Iran was one of a number of countries reporting a record rise in the daily number of coronavirus cases. It said the figure had reached 10,463 over the previous 24 hours, the first time the numbers for new infections had reached five figures.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has tested positive for coronavirus. Zelenskiy said he “feels good” and was self-isolating, adding on Twitter, “It’s gonna be fine!”

New Delhi (NVI): India’s coronavirus tally stands at 85,91,731 with a single-day jump of 38,074 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, Union Health Ministry confirmed.

The country’s death toll has gone up to 1,27,059 with 448 fatalities reported during the same period.

Notably, 79,59,406 patients have been cured and recovered all over the country while active cases stands at 5,05,265.

However, this is for the 10th consecutive day when the active coronavirus cases remained below 6-lakh mark.

In worst-affected Maharashtra, the coronavirus cases climbed to 17,23,135 followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Other states with a high virus hit included Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Delhi.

Moreover, of the total deaths, Maharashtra tops the tally with 45,240 fatalities, followed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, more than 11.96 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to November 9. Of these 10,43,665 samples were tested yesterday.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan reviews COVID-19 situation yesterday in 9 states, including West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala and expresses concern that winters and festive season can potentially threaten gains made against the virus.

India, Maldives sign 4 MoUs including Greater Male Connectivity Project

New Delhi (NVI): India and Maldives today signed four memorandums of understanding (MoUs), including the grant of $100 million by India for the $500-million Greater Male Connectivity Project that will link the capital Male with three islands.

The development took place during Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla’s visit to Maldives as he met his Maldivian counterpart Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed and discussed ways on economic recovery amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“In the last two years, Maldives has seen the fruition of key development cooperation initiatives taken during the State Visit of President Solih to India in Dec 2018 and subsequent high level engagements. The financial package of US$ 1.4 billion announced during the State Visit, as well as projects funded by the HICDP grant and cash grant announced last March have now become a reality for all to see,” FS Shringla said on the occasion.

“Since then, the Indian Government has provided additional assistance of US$ 500 million for the Greater Malé Connectivity Project. This project which will connect Malé with Villingli, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi through bridges and causeways, will become a new economic lifeline for Maldives. It will link capital Malé, with the new commercial port at Gulhifalhu, also being funded under and Indian LoC, and the Thilafushi industrial zone,” he added.

The Foreign Secretary was speaking at the handing over of Children’s parks for 67 islands in Maldives under cash grant projects, at National Stadium, Male.

Shringla, who is on a two-day visit, also met President Ibrahim Solih to review bilateral ties.

“We are committed to speedy implementation of the projects. We are already in the middle of completing procedures for the LOC US$ 1.2 billion projects,” Shringla was quoted as saying in a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs.

“The Covid pandemic has caused widespread disruptions, but I am happy that even Covid could not stop or slow down India-Maldives cooperation. President Solih has himself publicly pointed out that India has been the largest supporter and assistance provider in dealing with the pandemic. Last month India provided US$ 250 million financial assistance, as a concessional loan, leaving it entirely to GoM to decide its usage in accordance with its priorities,” he said.

The four MoU’s signed during Shringla’s visit also included cooperation in youth and sports affairs, setting up soil and plant testing laboratories, and establishing a drug detox facility.

Shringla also mentioned that India’s development projects in Maldives are demand-driven and will involve the Maldivian government at all stages. The tendering process and award of contract will also be done by the Government of Maldives, he said.

“We are committed to speedy implementation of the projects. We are already in the middle of completing procedures for the LOC US$ 1.2 billion projects,” he said.

On the occasion, Shringla also reiterated India’s commitment towards providing Covid-19 vaccine to Maldives when it is ready.

“Our Prime Minister has stated that India will produce an affordable and accessible vaccine for all our partners and friends and in this, as a close neighbour and friend, we will accord priority to Maldives. I am pleased to announce that whenever a vaccine is developed in India, we will share it with the Government of Maldives,” he said.

Srinagar (NVI): Jammu and Kashmir administration has sought explanation from Kashmir Bar Association over its constitution which states J&K as disputed area, while issuing three notices in this regard.

Moreover, the J&K administration has also prohibited Kashmir Bar Association from holding any elections till issue on terming Kashmir as disputed is addressed, according to officials.

In addition to this, the bar has also been asked to submit a certificate issued by the competent authority, its Article of Association, its registered office, executive body and validity of registration among other details.

The notices were issued by Srinagar District Magistrate Shahid Iqbal Choudhury to the president of the bar association. Apart from that, the district magistrate also imposed prohibitory orders in the premises of the district court complex in Srinagar.

J&K: BJP announces 1st list of candidates for DDC polls

Jammu (NVI): J&K BJP has announced the first list of the candidates for the upcoming District Development Council (DDC) elections at party headquarters at Trikuta Nagar here.

J&K BJP President Ravinder Raina made the announcement for the names of party leaders who are entrusted with the party’s mandate after marathon meetings held with all the senior party leadership, an official release said.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh, BJP National Secretary Dr. Narinder Singh, former BJP President Dy CM Dr. Nirmal Singh and other senior party leaders participated in the meetings.

In its first list of candidates, BJP has announced 35 candidates for DDC elections in Jammu region and 37 DDC candidates for Kashmir valley. Names for total 72 seats have been declared today.

DDC elections will be conducted in eight phases between Nov 28 and Dec 19; counting will take place on December 22.

Jammu (NVI): Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today released Shri Mata Vaishno Devi gold and silver coins ahead of Diwali for millions of devotees worldwide.

On the occasion, LG Sinha said he is fortunate to have got the opportunity to release the coins.

“Maa is worshipped lovingly and showers immense light, blessings and ultimate benediction upon the devotees, “he said.

“Few seekers are not able to travel to Vaishno Devi’s sunlit peak of mountain at Katra due to Corona Pandemic, so the Shrine Board has decided to make the coins available in Jammu and Delhi as well,” LG Sinha was quoted as saying by J&K Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR-JK).

“Maa Goddess’s prayer from the deepest core of heart brings bliss, peace and prosperity. She represents the absolute energy, the ultimate illumination and harmony for mankind and during these testing times, we all seek health and prosperity for the society,” the LG said.

He stressed that it is important for the people to choose the path of peace in the interest of humanity.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has developed 2gm, 5gm and 10gm gold and silver coins carrying an impression of the holy ‘pindies’.

The rates of the coins depend on the denomination chosen and the prevailing gold/silver rates. Currently, a 10 gm silver coin is available at Rs 770.00, 5 gm silver coin for Rs 410.00, 2 gm gold coin for Rs 11,490.00, 5 gm gold coin for Rs 28,150.00 and 10 gm gold coin for Rs 55,880.00.

These coins are available at souvenir shops at Bhawan, Jammu Airport, Katra, Kalika Dham Jammu and JK House, 5 Prithviraj Road, Delhi.

Arunachal school children to wear khadi face masks

New Delhi (NVI): As the Arunachal Pradesh government has decided to reopen schools from November 16, for the first time post COVID-19 lockdown, thousands of children will be sporting tri-colour Khadi face masks in the state, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) said.

The aim behind encouraging students to wear tri-colour face mask is to instill a sense of nationalism.

As many as 60,000 high quality Khadi Cotton Face Masks will be produced by KVIC for school children in Arunachal Pradesh, the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium said in a statement.

This is for the first time that a State government in North East India has purchased such a huge quantity of Khadi face masks for its students. The order was placed on November 3, and within 6 days, KVIC has supplied the requisite masks to the government considering the urgency involved.

The statement further said that, KVIC has provided, tri-colour cotton face masks to the state government with its logo suitably placed on the masks.  It has used double twisted Khadi fabric for manufacturing of these masks.

These masks helps retain 70 per cent of the moisture content inside while providing an easy passage for the air to pass through. Khadi cotton face masks are washable, reusable and biodegradable.

“The Government of Arunachal Pradesh has decided to open schools for class 10th and 12th from November 16, and also accorded approval for procurement of 60,000 Khadi Cotton face masks from KVIC for the school children,” the purchase order issued by the state government said.

KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena said the supply of face masks to Arunachal Pradesh was accorded top priority as it was meant for the students who will be taking classes from November 16.

“This is a prestigious order for KVIC and such big orders create additional job for Khadi artisans. We have supplied the order in just 6 days while ensuring the highest quality standards of face masks,” Saxena added.

Notably, KVIC has sold 23 lakh face masks in just over 6 months since it was launched in April this year. It has received several bulk orders including 12.30 lakh face masks from the Indian Red Cross Society, the ministry noted.

KVIC has also received repeat orders from Rashtrapati Bhavan, Prime Minister’s Office, several State Governments and Central Government Ministries and PSUs apart from the general public.
