AIPSN calls for transparent and reliable clinical trials of Covid vaccine

Representational image

New Delhi (NVI): All India People’s Science Network (AIPSN) has said that due process of scientific trials should be followed strictly and transparently for all Covid-19 candidate vaccines and treatment drugs, regardless of systems of medicine.

AIPSN, a network of 40 People’s science movements working in 25 states, has said that India must follow “transparent, reliable and scientific clinical trials protocols,” while developing the indigineous Covid vaccine.

It is pertinent to mention here that scientists working in the National Institute of Virology (NIV) under the ICMR and Hyderabad-based BBIL have developed an inactivated vaccine candidate, BBV152 COVID, using a virus strain isolated in NIV.

BBIL got approval for Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials on June 29 from the Central Drugs and Standards Control Organisation (CDSCO) as part of the fast-tracking of the process even while pre-clinical animal trials are still underway.

According to the submission of BBIL with the Clinical Trials Registry of India (CTRI) also under ICMR, the enrolment for Phase 1 was to begin from July 13th and the duration of the trial covering all the three stages was to be 15 months. 12 hospitals with widely varying track-record and experience in vaccine trials have been selected for the purpose by ICMR in an entirely arbitrary and non-transparent manner.

Indian youth help turn the tide against plastic

New Delhi (NVI): Tide Turners educates young people about single-use plastics, encouraging them to alter their attitude towards plastic consumption and spark behavioral change in their communities, primatologist Jane Goodall said while addressing a virtual crowd of young change-makers from India.

The Tide Turner Plastic Challenge is United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) global initiative to engage youth across India for addressing the issue of plastic pollution, which threatens life in oceans, rivers and on land.

On June 30, the first phase of the challenge in India saw the participation of nearly 1,27,000 youth from all corners of the country.

Jane Goodall, the UN Messenger of Peace said, “Every individual matters and makes a difference every single day, but it is up to you to choose the kind of difference you wish to make.”

With increasing use of single-use plastic in this era of COVID -19 pandemic this programme assumed even greater significance. The initiative also enjoyed strong support of the Government of India’s Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC).

According to India’s Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), around 26,000 tonnes of plastic is generated per day in India, 10,000 of which is uncollected. But for the thousands of young people who have completed the challenge, there is hope for a better future.

All participants had to undertake multiple levels of challenges. First, they had to audit their plastic footprint and take action to reduce it. At the next leader level, they were expected to influence and mobilize their institutions and communities for accelerated collaborative action.

At the final championship level, they were expected to initiate dialogues with authorities in schools, colleges, corporations and businesses and advocate practices to mitigate plastic pollution through embracing policies to reduce the use of disposable plastic on their premises.

In all, more than 1,700 youth qualified for the championship badge.

The Youth Summit was marked by the presence of special guests – from celebrity changemakers, to badge-holders from Kenya, Uganda, and Ghana – who shared their passion for the environment.

Actress and model Dia Mirza spoke about using her platforms to share messages about the environment with different audiences.

In India, Tide Turners is led by UNEP, with support from implementing partners: World Wide Fund for Nature India (WWF India), Centre for Environment Education (CEE), and the Million Sparks Foundation.

Since June 2019, 1,70,000 young people have participated in the Tide Turners challenge, earning badges made entirely from recycled plastic. The initiative operates in twenty-three countries in Africa and Asia.

Pakistan had 1288 temples in 1947, now only 31 are functional

A complex in Saidpur Village, which houses a Hindu temple, Islamabad, Pakistan (Source: @ArabNews)

New Delhi (NVI): In Pakistan, only 31 out of the 1,288 Hindu temples, which existed at the time of partition, are functional now, the Pakistan Hindu Council has disclosed against the backdrop of halting of a temple construction in Islamabad because of protests by extremist Muslims.

It has also come to light that Hindus are not permitted to worship at a 16th century Ram temple in Islamabad for the last seven decades, according to a report in the Arab News.

The newspaper quoted Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Hindu Council, as saying that 1,288 Hindu temples were registered with the Evacuee Trust Property Board and out of these, only 31 are functioning currently. The Board is responsible for the maintenance of properties abandoned by those who moved to India during partition in 1947.

“We should be allowed to rehabilitate our existing temples,” Vankwani added.

The newspaper also reported that in Islamabad, there is a tiny 16th century Ram temple but since 1947, Hindus have not been allowed to worship there by authorities.

Hindus used to travel from far and wide to worship at this Ram Temple, stay in an adjoining dharamshala (rest house for pilgrims) in a place now called Saidpur Village.

At present, tourists can visit the Ram Temple in Saidpur Village but idols have been removed and the shrine today is all but subsumed into a touristy strip of restaurants and handicraft stores, the report said.

The area, which once used to be surrounded by fresh water ponds considered holy by the Hindu community, now has a foul-smelling rainwater channel which flows through the village.

According to records dating back to 1893, a fair was held each year at a pond near the site to commemorate that Ram and his family had once sipped water from it, the report said.

Islamabad was purpose-built in 1960 on the border of the Punjab plains. It was in the same year that the Ram temple complex was converted into a girls’ school.

After years of protests by the Hindu community, the school was moved to another location and the temple finally vacated in 2006. But Hindus were still not allowed to worship there.

Sawai Lal, a Hindu rights activist, told Arab News, “The government has apparently preserved the site as heritage, but is violating its sanctity by allowing restaurants and shops to operate on the premises.”

Therefore, most of Pakistan’s minorities feel that the state has failed to protect them, and argue that it sometimes even tolerates violence against them.

In the recent weeks, temples have come into the spotlight after authorities in Islamabad allegedly capitulated to pressure from politicians, media outlets and fanatics to halt the construction of a new temple in the Pakistani capital.

In Pakistan, minorities make up a small fraction of the 220 million-strong Muslim-majority population. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who founded Pakistan in 1947 as a safe haven for the Muslims of then united India, had promised minorities that they would enjoy freedom of worship and equality without discrimination.

Referring to the halting of construction of the Krishna temple in Islamabad, Lal said, “We are feeling threatened after some fanatics tried to vandalize our temple site in Islamabad.”

He said there were currently no functioning Hindu temples for Islamabad’s 3,000 Hindus.

As construction began on the new temple in the capital last week, the hopes of the beleaguered community were revived, Hindu leaders said. But now, they await final approval from the prime minister so that construction can once more begin.

In additon, “Prime Minister Imran Khan has also made repeated commitments to protect Pakistan’s religious minorities,” said Omar Waraich, Head of South Asia at Amnesty International told Arab News.

“Prime Minister Imran Khan must lend his commitments to religious freedom for all some weight and ensure that Pakistan’s Hindus and other religious minorities are able to practice their faith freely and without fear,” Omar said.

Chinese took incredibly aggressive action on LAC: Pompeo

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo

New Delhi (NVI): Speaking on the ongoing India-China border tensions, US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said that the Chinese took incredibly aggressive actions on LAC and the Indians have done their best to respond to that.

While addressing a daily briefing, Pompeo said that he has spoken with his Indian counterpart, Dr S Jaishankar, about the border tensions several times.

Pompeo was responding to questions about the Chinese intrusion into Indian territories in eastern Ladakh.

He further added, “I put all this in the context of (Chinese) General Secretary Xi Jinping and his behavior throughout the region, and indeed, throughout the world,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s possible to look at that particular instance of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) aggression in isolation. I think you need to put it in the larger context,” Pompeo said.

He further stated that there weren’t many neighbouring countries of China that could satisfactorily say that they knew where their sovereignty ended and the Chinese Communist Party would respect that. “That is certainly true now for people of Bhutan as well. The world must come together to respond to this,” the US Secretary of State said.

The Indian and Chinese troops have been locked in an eight-week standoff in several areas in eastern Ladakh including Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley and Gogra Hot Spring.

The situation deteriorated last month following the Galwan Valley clashes that left 20 Indian Army personnel dead as the two sides significantly bolstered their deployments in most areas along the LAC.

However on Monday, the Chinese military began withdrawing troops from the Galwan Valley and Gogra Hot Spring after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held lengthy talks about the issue.
