PM Modi emphasizes on teachings of Lord Buddha on Ashadha Poornima

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the nation on Ashadha Poornima and emphasized on the teachings of Lord Buddha.

In an address on the occasion of inauguration of Dharma Chakra Day, PM Modi said that we need to follow the eight-fold path of Lord Buddha for the well-being of society and nation.

“I want to convey my greetings to all on the occasion of Ashadha Poornima today. It is also known as Guru Purnima. This is a day to remember our Gurus, who gave us knowledge. In that spirit, we pay homage to Lord Buddha,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi further added, “The eight-fold path of Lord Buddha shows the way towards the well-being of many societies and nations. It highlights the importance of compassion and kindness. The teachings of Lord Buddha celebrate simplicity both in thought and action.”

The lasting solutions to the extra-ordinary challenges can be achieved through the ideals of Lord Budha, which are and will always remain relevant, Modi said.

Narendra Modi also said, “Today the world fights extra-ordinary challenges. To these challenges, lasting solutions can come from the ideals of Lord Buddha. They were relevant in the past. They are relevant in the present. And, they will remain relevant in the future.”

Global corona cases rise to over 11 million

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases globally has increased to over 11 million, with over 5,23,000 deaths.

At least 5.7 million patients have recovered worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University statistics.

In the US, the total number of cases stand around 2.79 million while more than 1,29,400 people have lost their lives due to the deadly virus.

Brazil, the second most affected country from COVID-19 after the US, recorded 42,223 cases within 24-hours and surpassed 1.5 million mark. The country’s death toll stands at 63,174.

Saudi Arabia passed milestone of 200,000 confirmed novel coronavirus cases, weeks before the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The countries around the world including the US, India, Denmark, and Italy have started the process of lifting the lockdown by easing restrictions despite the number of cases continues to rise.

Meanwhile, emphasising on wearing of face masks and social distancing, the World Health Organisation’s emergencies chief Michael J. Ryan said, “we need to put up a fight now during a peak in the current wave of the coronavirus pandemic, rather than focusing on when a second wave might come.”

India’s COVID tally nears 6.5 lakh; death toll 18,655

New Delhi (NVI): The coronavirus cases in India saw the biggest single-day spike of 22,771 in the past 24 hours, taking the total number to 6,48,315, Union Health Ministry confirmed.

The death toll due to the virus rose to 18,655, with 442 new fatalities being reported in the last 24 hours,

As many as 3,94,227 patients have recovered all over the country. With this the recovery rate in India stands at 60.73 percent.

In Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases increased to 1,92,990, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,027,21 cases, and Delhi with 94,695 cases.

Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of fatalities at 8376, ministry said.

The death toll in the national capital rose to 2,923, while 65,625 patients in Delhi have recovered so far, the healthy ministry data shows.

The other worst affected states are Gujarat (34,600), Uttar Pradesh (25,797), West Bengal (20,488) and Rajasthan (19,052).

Currently, 5,635 beds are occupied in the hospitals out of a total capacity of 15,243 beds, 1,948 in the dedicated Covid Care Centres and 167 in the dedicated Covid Health Centres. Over 15,878 people are under home isolation.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the total number of samples tested up to July 3 is 95,40,132 of which 2,42,383 samples were tested yesterday.

Covid-19 cases surpass 8,000 mark in J&K with 170 fresh cases

Srinagar (NVI): The total number of confirmed Covid-19 positive cases today crossed 8,000 mark in Jammu and Kashmir as 170 fresh cases were reported including 10 Beacon men, four CRPF personnel and four minors.

Officials said that among new cases that were detected in J&K, 61 were tested positive at SKIMS, 11 at JVC Bemina and rest at other hospitals. “The total number of Covid positive cases has crossed 8,000. The new 170 cases include 10 Beacon men, four CRPF personnel, a doctor and four minors,” they said.

Among the 170 new cases, 128 belong to Kashmir division while 42 are from Jammu division, officials said, adding that the total number of positive cases in Kashmir has reached 6,327 including 3,721 recoveries and 105 deaths while the total number of positive cases in Jammu has reached 1,692 including 1,254 recoveries and 14 deaths.

The officials said that the total number of active cases in the UT is 2,825 including 2,401 from Kashmir and 424 from Jammu.

With 101 more recoveries, the tally of total recoveries in J&K has reached 5,075 which is 63.28 percent of the total cases.

Cases tested positive in J&K include 41 from Srinagar, 5 from Kulgam, 21 from Baramulla, 1 from Shopian, 21 from Anantnag, 24 from Kupwara, 5 from Budgam, 2 from Bandipora and 8 from Ganderbal in Kashmir division while 42 from Jammu include 13 from Jammu and two from Udhampur, 10 from Kathua, 6 from Samba, 3 each from Ramban, Doda and Rajouri and 2 from Kishtwar.

As per the daily information bulletin, 2,90,760 persons in J&K are under observation while 40,929 persons have been kept under home quarantine. Besides that, 2,825 persons are in hospital isolation while 39 persons are under hospital quarantine.

According to the bulletin, 2,02,112 persons have completed the surveillance period and 44,736 persons are under home surveillance.

So far, results of 3,85,501 samples are available out of which 3,77,482 stand negative while 8,019 have been tested positive. Among positive cases, 2,825 are active and 5,075 persons have recovered while 120 have died.

Odisha: Covid-19 test in private labs fixed at Rs 2,200

Bhubaneswar (NVI): The Odisha Government has fixed price for RT-PCR COVID-19 test in private labs for individuals at Rs 2,200, as per a notification by the State Health and Family Welfare department.

Four private hospitals in Bhubaneswar city have also been named in the notification, approved by ICMR for conducting the test.

The test can be conducted at the Department of Lab Services, Apollo Hospital, IMS & SUM Hospital, In DNA Life Sciences Pvt Limited (2 nd Floor, KIIT TBI ), and Gen X Diagnostics, Bhubaneswar.

The tests will be conducted under the supervision of RMRC, Bhubaneswar, the notification said.

Meanwhile, the total confirmed coronavirus cases in Odisha have climbed to 8,106 with 561 new positive cases in the biggest single-day spike so far, according to the state Health and Family Welfare Department.

Out of the new cases detected, 424 were reported from quarantine centres while the rest 136 are local contacts.

Among the fresh cases, 560 positive cases are reported from 19 districts of Odisha and 1 case is that of an NDRF personnel who had returned from West Bengal during Amphan duty.

With two more fatalities reported from Ganjam, the death toll from the disease has climbed to 29 in the state.

The number of active cases in the state currently stands at 2,567. As many as 3,534 patients have recovered from the disease in Odisha so far.

JEE and NEET exams postponed, to be held in September

New Delhi (NVI): Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank today announced that JEE and NEET exams have been postponed while keeping in mind the safety of students amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a video message, the HRD minister announced that JEE Main exam will now be held between September 1-6, JEE Advanced exam will be held on Sept 27 and NEET exam will be held on Sept 13.

The announcement comes a day after the HRD Ministry had formed a panel and asked the National Testing Agency (NTA) to give recommendations on the conduct of exams amid the ongoing pandemic situation.

“Keeping in mind the safety of students and to ensure quality education we have decided to postpone #JEE & #NEET examinations. JEE Main examination will be held between 1st-6th Sept, JEE advanced exam will be held on 27th Sept & NEET examination will be held on 13th Sept,” Nishank said in a video message.

This is the second time this year that these exams have been postponed this year. While JEE exam was scheduled to be held in April, NEET was to be held in May.

J&K: Govt employee arrested for ‘anti-national’ social media posts

Srinagar (NVI): A government employee, working in the higher education department was today arrested by Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Cyber Cell for running an anti-national campaign on social media.

As per the official release, a person identified as Tahir Nazir Shalla, working in the higher education department was arrested for posting the controversial stuff on social media, which as per the police was in contravention of social media policy for the government.

An official in the Cyber Cell said that the employee was allegedly running an anti-national campaign on social media and tried to create a fake narrative. “The accused was circulating highly seditious and provocative posts through his social media accounts, which were highly prejudicial to maintenance of law and order,” he said.

He said that the accused has been handed over to Police Station Sopore in northern district of Baramulla by Cyber Cell. “The employee has also been booked under relevant sections of law for further course of action,” they said.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Cyber Cell said that it has identified many persons who are misusing social media by spreading false propaganda against the government.

The statement further read that the investigation has been set in motion to identify other persons involved in similar anti-State campaigns on social media and spreading false propaganda.

Earthquake tremors felt in Delhi-NCR

New Delhi (NVI): A 4.5 magnitude earthquake was felt in parts of the Delhi-NCR region this evening with its epicenter at 63 km south of Gurugram in Haryana, according to National Centre for Seismology.

Delhi-NCR region has recorded some low-intensity quakes in the recent past also.

Meanwhile, an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 also hit near Champhai in Mizoram earlier today.

PM condoles death of Sikh pilgrims in bus-train collision in Pakistan

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over the tragic demise of Sikh pilgrims in a bus-train collision in Pakistan’s Punjab.

At least 19 Sikh pilgrims were killed today when the passenger vehicle in which they were traveling was hit by a Karachi to Lahore train- Shah Hussain Express- in Sheikhupura district, Pakistan, Geo News reported.

“Pained by the tragic demise of Sikh pilgrims in Pakistan. My thoughts are with their families and friends in this hour of grief. I pray that those pilgrims injured recover at the earliest,” PM Modi tweeted.

According to the news report, the railway officials said that the accident took place at a train crossing without a barrier and all the wounded have been shifted to a nearby hospital.

It was also reported that all the bodies have been shifted to the hospital and rescue operation has been completed. The wounded were given first aid by locals at the time of the accident.

All the dead are said to be from one family and were on their way home from Nankana, one of the pious Sikh religious sites while eight others were hurt.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has also issued a statement expressing grief over the loss of lives in the accident and directed authorities to provide best medical treatment to the wounded.

Chief Minister, Punjab, Usman Buzdar also expressed grief, saying that he deeply sympathises with the victims. He gave directions for provision of best treatment to the wounded.

Meanwhile, train accidents in Pakistan have increased in frequency in recent years, according to reports. Last year in November, more than 70 people died when a Karachi-Rawalpindi train caught fire during its journey.

According to the Dawn, more than 100 train-related incidents occurred in 2019 alone, with several resulting in fatalities.

Bangladesh COVID-19 tally surpassed 1.56 lakh

New Delhi (NVI): Coronavirus cases in Bangladesh exceeded 1.56 lakh after 3,114 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours.

In addition to this, 42 new deaths were reported during this period, taking the total number of Covid-19 fatalities in the country to 1,968, according to United News of Bangladesh.

The daily infection rate was today recorded at 21.26 percent in the country.

So far, 68,048 people have recovered in the country after 1,606 more patients were recovered during this period.

Against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 43.51 percent and the mortality rate is 1.26 percent in the country.
