About 10 mn people in India have won fight against Covid-19: PM

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that India is in a much better position today as the Government took effective measures on time and about 10 million people in the country have won the fight against Covid-19 due to these efforts.

The Prime Minister was speaking at a virtual ceremony while laying the foundation stone of AIIMS Rajkot in Gujarat.

During his speech, the Prime Minister remembered the frontline COVID warriors who risked their lives fighting against the pandemic and said, “This last day of the year is to remember India’s millions of doctors, health warriors, sanitation workers, and front line corona warriors.”

“I salute the frontline warriors who have given their lives fulfilling their duty. This year has shown that how effectively we can cope with the most difficult crisis when we are all united,” he said.

PM Modi further informed that the country is preparing for mass vaccination and the new year is coming with the hope of treatment.

“I’m sure people of the country would make similar efforts for mass vaccination as they had put in to contain the spread of the virus. Necessary preparations regarding COVID-19 vaccines are underway in India. Efforts are being made in various stages to make the vaccine reach every corner of the country,” he said.

PM Modi said the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) project in Rajkot will generate thousands of jobs, provide good health care and development of Gujarat.

“We could only establish six AIIMS after so many years of independence. In 2003, Atal ji’s government took the initiative to establish six more AIIMS. In the past 6 years, we have started work on establishing ten more AIIMS,” he said.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), a total of 201 acres of land has been allotted for the institute, which will be built at an estimated cost of around Rs 1,200 crore and is expected to be completed by mid-2022.

“The state-of-the-art 750-bed hospital will also have a 30-bed AAYUSH block. It will have 125 MBBS seats and 60 nursing seats,” the PMO said.

The virtual ceremony was also attended by the Chief Minister of Gujarat Vijay Rupani, Governor Acharya Devvrat and Minister of State for health, Ashwini Kumar Choubey.

New Delhi (NVI): The total count of Covid-19 cases in India surpassed 10.26 million and currently stands at 10,266,674 with 21,821 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The country’s death toll has gone up to 1,48,738 after 299 new fatalities were reported since yesterday.

Moreover, in worst-affected Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases surpassed 19,28,603 followed by Karnataka with 9,18,544 cases, and Andhra Pradesh with 8,81,948positive cases.

At 3.3 degrees, Delhi shivers at season’s lowest min temp

New Delhi (NVI): The minimum temperature in Delhi dropped to 3.3 degrees Celsius this morning, the lowest temperature recorded in the season so far, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

According to the IMD’s weather bulletin, the minimum temperature in the national capital is four degrees below the normal at this time of the year. “Icy winds swept through the city bringing the temperatures down sharply,” it added.

The Met department also informed that the mercury may drop further on New Year’s Eve and the extreme cold conditions are expected to improve in parts of the city from Friday onwards.

“On Thursday, the minimum temperature is expected to go down to around 3 degree Celsius. From Friday, however, the temperature will start increasing,” IMD said, adding that minimum temperature is likely to reach around 4 degrees Celsius bringing some relief.

The Met department said minimum temperature in Delhi and neighbouring areas will start rising under the influence of an ‘intense’ western disturbance which will also affect northwest India.

In addition to this, the weather department forecasted rain and higher minimum temperatures throughout the rest of the week between January 2 to January 6.

Furthermore, the fresh western disturbance is likely to hit the western Himalayan region, which may bring light rains and thundershowers to the plains, including Delhi, according to the IMD’s bulletin.

“Minimum temperatures over most parts of northwest and central India are likely to rise by 3-5 degrees Celsius for three days from January 1, it added.

Coronavirus cases surpass 82.6 mn globally; death toll tops 18 lakh

New Delhi (NVI): The global count of coronavirus cases has reached more than 82.6 million, with over 18,04,000 deaths reported. Over 46.5 million patients have been cured and recovered from the deadly contagion, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

In the US, the total number of coronavirus infections have reached more than 19.7 million, while the number of fatalities due to the virus have surpassed 3,41,900 in the country with 3,900 new deaths.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases has surpassed 7.61 million, while the country accounts for the second highest number of COVID-19 fatalities at 1,93,875.

The Health Ministry of Mexico registered 12,406 new coronavirus cases and 1,052 fatalities on Wednesday, bringing the total in the country to 1,413,935 infections and 124,897 deaths.

Spain also reported 9,860 new COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours, the highest number registered since the start of the pandemic. With this, the total number of infections stands at 19,10,210 in the country.

Meanwhile, in the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that further millions of people have to live under under the strictest tier 4 restrictions in from Thursday, alarm about a new strain of coronavirus spreading across the country.

Apart from this, Ireland will enter lockdown for a third time, as the COVID-19 spread threatens hospitals. The government will close non-essential services, limit travel and delay school reopening, Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin said.

India’s COVID tally tops 10.26 million with 21,821 new cases

New Delhi (NVI): India witnessed a single-day rise of 21,821 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tally to 10,266,674, Union Health Ministry said.

The country’s death toll has reached to 1,48,738 with 299 fatalities reported during this period.

Notably, 98,60,280 patients have been cured and recovered all over the country while active cases remained below 2.6 lakh mark and stands at 2,57,656.

However, the national recovery rate improved almost to 96 per cent in the country.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with total 19,28,603 confirmed cases which include 49,463 deaths. The active cases in the state stand at 54,206 and 18,24,934 recoveries.

Maharashra is followed by Karnataka (9,18,544), Andhra Pradesh (8,81,948), Tamil Nadu (8,17,077) and Kerala (7,55,718).

The national capital also reported 677 new COVID-19 cases in past 24 hours, pushing the tally to 6,24,795, while the death toll from the virus has reached 10,523 in Delhi.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, more than 17.20 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to December 30. Of these, 11,27,244 samples were tested yesterday.

Furthermore, the Delhi government today imposed a night curfew on December 31 and January 1 from 11 pm to 6 am to avoid spread of new COVID-19 strain during New Year celebrations.

New Delhi (NVI): The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) today announced that a night curfew is imposed in Delhi on December 31 and January 1, to avoid spread of new coronavirus strain during the New Year celebrations.

According to the DDMA order, the curfew in Delhi will be placed between 11 pm of December 31 to 6 am of January 1 and 11 pm of January 1, 2021, to 6 am of January 2.

“Not more than five people will be allowed at a public places and no new year celebrations events or gatherings will be permitted post 11 pm,” the DDMA said.

There will be, however, no restrictions on the interstate and intrastate movement of persons and goods during the night curfew.

Furthermore, the authority has also directed all District Magistrates of Delhi and their counterpart District Deputy Commissioners of Police and all authorities to ensure strict compliance with this order.

Earlier, the states of Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Rajasthan has also imposed night curfew to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

India to open embassies in Estonia, Paraguay and Dominican Republic

New Delhi (NVI): The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for opening up of three Indian Missions in Estonia, Paraguay and Dominican Republic next year.

The decision was taken during the Union Cabinet meeting today chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a proposal from the External Affairs Ministry.

“Opening of Indian Missions in these countries will help expand India’s diplomatic footprint, deepen political relations, enable growth of bilateral trade, investment and economic engagements, facilitate stronger people-to-people contacts, bolster political outreach in multilateral fora and help garner support for India’s foreign policy objectives,” read an official statement.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar tweeted on the development, saying that the move will expand India’s global footprint.

“Expanding its global footprint, India will open Embassies in Estonia, Paraguay and Dominican Republic. Our partnership has strengthened in recent years and resident missions will advance our cooperation further,” he tweeted.

“Look forward to their early establishment,” he said in another tweet while tagging foreign ministers of these respective countries.

Indian mission in these countries will also better assist the Indian community and protect their interests, the Cabinet said in a statement.

“The objective of our foreign policy is to build a conducive environment for India’s growth and development through partnerships with friendly countries.  There are presently Missions and Posts across the world which serve as conduits of our relations with partner countries,” the said.

“Enhancement of India’s diplomatic presence will, inter-alia, provide market access for Indian companies and bolster Indian exports of goods and services. This would have a direct impact in augmenting domestic production and employment in line with our goal of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’,” it added.

Udhampur-Baramulla rail link project: PM sets Aug 15, 2022 deadline

Jammu (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reviewed 11 projects related to 7 ministries including the prestigious Udhampur-Baramulla Rail link being constructed in Jammu & Kashmir and fixed August 15, 2022 as the deadline for the same.

The Prime Minister today chaired the 34th PRAGATI interaction with Union Secretaries of various Ministries and Chief Secretaries of States/UTs through video-conference.

Chief Secretary, J&K, BVR Subrahmanyam along with administrative secretaries of departments of Health & Medical Education, and Jal Shakti also participated in the video conference.

While reviewing the progress of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which will connect Kashmir valley with a railway line, PM Modi was informed that all the issues have been resolved and work is progressing smoothly.

Underscoring the potential of the project to exponentially boost Kashmir’s tourism and economy, Prime Minister fixed the deadline for completion of the project as 15.08.2022.

Reviewing the progress of Ayushman Bharat- Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) across the country, Prime Minister said the scheme not only provides financial relief but also acts as a safety net to the underprivileged families which would earlier be pushed into poverty when befallen by serious illnesses. Pertinently, Jammu and Kashmir has recently launched Ayushman Bharat- ‘Sehat’ scheme and extended free-of-cost and cashless healthcare benefits to all the residents of the Union Territory.

Prime Minister said that through the Jal Jeevan Mission- Har Ghar Nal Se Jal, every rural household in the country will be provided with a clean drinking water supply in adequate quantity by 2024. These efforts will lead to an improvement in living standards of rural communities and thereby must be taken up on mission-mode by all the States and UTs, he added.

It was informed that in Jammu and Kashmir, the mission has been completed in 2 districts and the rest will be completed by 2022.

Pak violates ceasefire, targets 3 villages along LoC in J&K’s Kupwara

Karnah (NVI): In yet another ceasefire violation, Pakistani troops today targeted three villages in the Karnah sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district along the Line of Control (LoC), defence officials said.

Pakistani Rangers resorted to unprovoked shelling in different hamlets of Karnah along LoC, they said.

Defence sources said Pakistan shelled Hajitara, Taad and Dhani villages. The shelling created panic among locals who were evacuated to safer places. Some of the mortar shells fired by the Pakistani army landed in some parts of affected villages, they said.

Defence sources added that the Indian Army retaliated effectively.

New Delhi (NVI): Sixth round of talks between the Central Government and protesting farmers were held today with a consensus reached on issues related to the environment and Electricity Act.

Following the meeting, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that “consensus on two of four issues” was reached.

However, the representatives of farmers who attended the meeting said that the demand to repeal the three farm laws recently passed by the Centre remains on the agenda.

Thousands of farmers have been protesting over the new farm laws for over a month now. They have also been protesting for a legal guarantee of MSP. Meanwhile, the next meeting is set to take place on January 4th. This was the sixth round of talks after a three-week hiatus.

Union Ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce, Som Parkash held the talks with the representatives of 41 farmer unions Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
