New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed 10.2 million and currently stands at 10,207,871 after 20,021 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,47,901 after 279 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with total 19,19,550 confirmed cases which include 49,255 deaths.

Active COVID-19 cases continue to decline in India

New Delhi (NVI): India has been reporting a continuous decline in active COVID-19 caseload as a percentage compared to the total positive cases, the Union Health Ministry said today.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Health stated, the share of total active cases of coronavirus has further shrunk to 2.72 per cent of the total positive cases and currently stands at 2,77,301 in the country.

“In the last 24 hours, a net decline of 1,389 cases from the total active caseload were registered in India,” it added.

The ministry also said, daily recoveries have outnumbered the daily new cases since more than a month now.

“20,021 persons were found to be COVID-19 positive in the past 24 hours. During the same period, 21,131 new recoveries were registered ensuring drop in the active caseload in the country,” it said.

The total recoveries are nearing 98 lakhs (97,82,669) and the national recovery rate has also increased to 95.83 per cent. With this, the gap between recoveries and active cases is consistently widening and has crossed 95 lakh and currently stands at 95,05,368.

Meanwhile, the country’s cases per million population is amongst the lowest in the world and stands at 7,397, the ministry said.

“The global average is 10,149 and countries such as Russia, UK, Italy, Brazil, France and USA have much higher cases per million population,” it added

According to the data, ten States and Union Territories contributed 72.99 per cent of the new recovered cases. Out of these, Kerala has reported the maximum number of single day recoveries with 3,463 cases followed by 2,124 people recovered in Maharashtra and 1,740 in West Bengal.

The ministry further said, “279 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours.”

Ten States and UTs account for 80.29 per cent of daily deaths. Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (66). West Bengal and Kerala follow with 29 and 25 daily deaths, respectively.

The daily deaths in India are on a sustained decline and deaths per million population in India (107) are amongst the lowest in the world. However, the global average is 224, the statement added.

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched India’s first-ever fully-automated driverless train operations on the Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro.

PM Modi also launched the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), dubbed as ‘One Nation One Card’, an inter-operable transport facility that allows users to pay for travel, toll duties, retail shopping, and withdraw money using one card.

The driverless train service will be available on Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line which connects Janakpuri West in West Delhi to Botanical Garden in Noida. This will be extended to Delhi Metro’s Pink Line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar) by mid-2021.

“The inauguration of the first driver-less metro train shows how fast India is moving towards smart systems,” Prime Minister Modi said inaugurating the ground-breaking project today during a virtual function.

He said, “The first metro in Delhi was started with the efforts of Atal (Bihari Vajpayee) Ji. When our government was formed in 2014, only five cities had metro services and today 18 cities have metro rail service. By 2025, we will take this service to more than 25 cities.”

“In 2014, only 248 kms of metro lines were operational in the country. Today it is about three times more than 700 kilometers. By the year 2025, we are trying to expand it to 1700 km,” PM added.

The Prime Minister said with the achievement of Metro Rail without a driver, our country has joined the select countries of the world where such facilities are available. He said a braking system in which 50 percent of the energy goes back into the grid when the brakes are applied are being used. Today 130 MW of solar power is being used in metro rail, which will be increased to 600 MW.

“This shows how fast India is progressing towards a smart system. The Delhi metro is now connected through National Common Mobility Card (NCMC),” PM Modi said on the occasion.

With these new trains, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will enter the elite league of 7 per cent of the world’s Metro networks that can operate without drivers, according to DMRC.

Talking about the Common Mobility Card, the PM said that providing the same standards and facilities for modernization is very important. The Common Mobility Card at the national level is a major step in this direction. This one card will give integrated access to the commuters wherever they travel, whichever public transport they take.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also attended the inauguration programme and the launch of fully operational National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) on the Airport Express Line.

Hundreds of UK tourists flee Covid quarantine in Swiss ski resort

New Delhi (NVI): Hundreds of British tourists have fled the Swiss ski resort of Verbier this week, breaking quarantine rules retroactively put in place to contain the spread of the coronavirus variant first discovered in the UK.

Following the detection of the new mutation of Covid-19 in Britain, Swiss authorities announced on December 21 that all people who had arrived from the UK since December 14 would need to self-isolate for 10 days from their date of arrival.

The new quarantine rules also applied to hundreds of British tourists who had planned to spend the Christmas break in Verbier, an alpine village located in the municipality of Bagnes in Canton du Valais

Swiss authorities managed to track down 420 visitors from the UK, who were told go into quarantine.

Around 200 of the 420 or so affected British tourists in the luxury Alpine ski station quit under the cover of darkness, according to media reports.

Hoteliers reportedly noticed guests had secretly departed when calls to rooms went unanswered and meals left outside doors were untouched.

Switzerland, which is facing its own surge in Covid cases, last week ordered the closure of restaurants, bars, cultural venues and sports facilities.

New Delhi (NVI): The government of Saudi Arabia today extended the ban on entry to the Kingdom through air, land and sea for another week, amid concern over new coronavirus strain.

In an official statement, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) stated, the Ministry of Interior said the kingdom is temporarily suspending all international flights — except in exceptional cases — for a period of one week, which can be extended by another week.

“Entry the kingdom through land and sea ports will also be suspended for a week, which can be extended by another week,” it added.

The decision was taken as a precautionary measure against the spread of the new variant of COVID-19, which had been detected in a number of countries, the SPA said.

Meanwhile, the exceptional cases would be exempted from the entry ban, and non-Saudi citizens are allowed to leave the Kingdom.

The Interior Ministry is also assessing the current situation and suspension of travel could be further extended, if necessary, the agency added.

Earlier on December 20, Saudi Arabia halted international flights and suspended entry through its land and sea ports for at least a week, after a new fast-spreading variant of coronavirus discovered in Britain.

So far, the Kingdom has registered 3,62,220 coronavirus cases, while the death toll stands at 6,185 in Saudi Arabia, the John Hopkins University data shows.

Coronavirus cases surge past 80.7 million worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): More than 80.7 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 17,64,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 45.6 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 19.1 million, while the number of fatalities caused due to the deadly contagion have exceeded 3,33,000 in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 74 lakh-mark and stands at 7,484,285 while the number of deaths have surged past 1,91,000 in the country.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s vice president Hamilton Mourão has tested positive for Covid-19.

Turkey’s government has introduced full weekend lockdowns and curfews during weekdays in an attempt to stem risisng coronavirus cases. Meanwhile, another 254 people have died in Turkey in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s death toll to 19,878.

The death toll in France’s hospitals and care homes has risen by 173 since Saturday. A total of 62,746 have now died from the virus in the country. Confirmed cases have also risen by 8,822 over the last 24 hours.

Furthermore, European countries have launched a massive vaccination drive on Sunday with elderly people and medics lining up to take the first shots to see off the pandemic that has claimed more than 1.7 million lives worldwide.

Saudi Arabia has extended a ban on people entering by air, sea and land for another week, amid fears about new coronavirus variants.

New Delhi (NVI): India witnessed a single-day rise of 20,021 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tally to 10,207,871, Union Health Ministry said.

The country’s death toll has reached to 1,47,901 with 279 fatalities reported during this period.

Notably, 97,82,669 patients have been cured and recovered all over the country while active cases remained below 2.8 lakh mark and stands at 2,77,301.

However, the national recovery rate rises to 95.83 per cent in the country.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with total 19,19,550 confirmed cases which include 49,255 deaths. The active cases in the state stand at 60,347 and 18,09,948 recoveries.

Maharashra is followed by Karnataka (9,16,456), Andhra Pradesh (8,81,061), Tamil Nadu (8,14,170) and Kerala (7,40,516).

The national capital also reported 757 new COVID-19 cases in past 24 hours, pushing the tally to 6,22,851, while the death toll from the virus has reached 10,453 in Delhi.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, more than 16.88 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to December 27. Of these, 7,15,397 samples were tested yesterday.

Furthermore, a two-day dry run for coronavirus vaccine administration program starts today in Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and Assam.

Pak forces now hunting down women protesting over Karima Baloch’s murder

Protests over killing of prominent Baloch activist Karima Baloch suspectedly by Pakistan's intelligence agencies.

New Delhi (NVI): Pakistani forces have launched brazen hunting for women in Quetta and Pasni cities in Balochistan who are protesting over activist Karima Baloch’s death, reports The Balochistan Post.

This is yet another attempt by Pakistani authorities to silence the voices over the mysterious death of Karima Baloch in Canada. According to the Baloch news portal, the Pakistani security forces raided the house of young activist Sheeraz Akbar who had led Friday’s demonstration against the alleged murder of Karima Baloch, in Pasni. Akbar was not in his house at that time, it said.

The forces threatened the family members of Akbar and enquired about a girl who had participated in the protest on Friday, according to the locals. The forces reportedly raided other places as well in the quest of the girl, TBP reported.

In another such search in Quetta, the security forces reportedly raided the house of the sister of Asad Yousaf and confiscated her mobile phone. They also warned her and a few others to not participate in any such protest in future, the news website reported.

However, the authorities have not yet commented on any of the two incidents

The protests over the death of Karima Baloch have gone beyond the borders. In yet another suspected political assassination carried out by Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, Karima Baloch was found dead in Toronto in Canada, hours after she went missing in mysterious circumstances.

Baloch National Movement (BNM), a pro-independent political movement, announced that it will carry out protests in America and Netherlands against the alleged murder of Karima Baloch. The demonstrations will be held in front of the Canadian embassies in both of the countries, reports TBP.

Karima, former Chairperson of Baloch Students Organisation (Azad), had taken refuge in Canada to escape the wrath of Pakistani authorities, especially the Army and its notorious intelligence agency ISI.

The leader, who was named by the BBC as one of the world’s 100 most “inspirational and influential” women in 2016, was last seen on December 20, 2020, at approximately 3 p.m, according to Balochistan Post.

New Delhi (NVI): Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has said that it is fully capable of starting a similar war in Pakistan’s Punjab province that Islamabad is trying to impose on Balochistan and other countries.

In a statement released to media yesterday, Jeeyand Baloch, the spokesperson of BLA, said that “Baloch Liberation Army considers the defence and liberation of Baloch nation its utmost responsibility”, reports The Balochistan Post.

“We cannot allow the enemy forces to run rampage against innocent civilians, women and children. Today’s attack was only a short trailer. If innocent Baloch civilians, women and children are not safe and continue to be targeted in Balochistan or abroad then the non-combatant citizens of the enemy state will also not find refuge. We have full capability of starting a similar war in Punjab that the enemy is trying to impose on Baloch nation in Balochistan and other countries,” Jeeyand Baloch was quoted as saying by TBP.

BLA’s stern warning to Pakistan government has come in the wake of mysterious death of Baloch activist Karima Baloch in Canada last week.

BLA also took the responsibility of destroying outposts of Pakistani forces in Bolan, and claimed it has killed 11 personnel and injured several others yesterday.

“The fighters of Baloch Liberation Army attacked outposts of Pakistani military in Jhalawan Thank area of Shahrag, Bolan and killed 11 personnel of Pakistani military,” the statement read.

The BLA spokesperson further claimed that multiple Pakistani security personnel fled the outposts leaving behind their weapons and dead bodies. “The outposts were under the control of BLA for more than two hours and the weapons and belongings of enemy forces were confiscated,” he was quoted as saying by TBP.

The news portal said that earlier, local authorities confirmed that a serious attack took place on multiple outposts of Pakistani forces around 5 pm (local time) on Saturday. The attack continued for multiple hours and backup forces tried to regain the control of the area late into the night, reports TBP.

It said that the authorities this morning confirmed that 8 personnel, including a junior commissioned officer at the rank of Naib Subedar in Pakistani army were killed and six others received serious injuries. The outposts were also completely destroyed.

Pertinent to mention here that Baloch armed groups like BLA have carried out several attacks in last two years on Pakistani security forces, destroying their outposts/camps in various areas of Balochistan.

According to The Balochistan Post, analysts believe the armed groups have changed modus operandi from carrying out distant attacks with minimum direct engagement to direct face to face gun battles. The dramatic transformation in tactics has led to increased casualties on both sides, TBP reported.

In its yesterday’s statement, BLA also said: “the uncivilised occupying forces have been completely defeated by Baloch freedom fighters on all fronts. Therefore, they have resorted to violence on innocent civilians, particularly women and children, and non-combatant political workers. Now their cunning acts are not limited to Balochistan and they have begun targeting Baloch refugees and journalists in foreign countries too.”

BLA is considered the fiercest armed group in Balochistan, fighting for liberation of the Baloch nation from Pakistan which has engaged in forced disappearance and mass killings of innocent Baloch people over the years.

New Delhi (NVI): Superstar Rajinikanth, who was hospitalised on Friday due to fluctuating blood pressure, has been discharged and is normal now.

A health bulletin issued by Hyderabad’s Apollo Hospital said there is “nothing alarming” about Rajinikanth’s health in the reports.

“All the investigations reports have come in and there is nothing alarming in the reports. The team of doctors will evaluate him this afternoon and take a decision on his discharge,” read the statement.

The superstar was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, following ‘severe blood pressure fluctuations’.
