New Delhi (NVI): Punjab government has made an announcement to impose a night curfew with immediate effect, from 9pm to 5am till April 30, amid rising COVID-19 cases in the state.

Furthermore, an order has been issued to ban political gatherings across the state till further notice.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had earlier warned of stricter restrictions if the COVID-19 situation in the state, which is reeling under a massive surge of cases and deaths, does not improve over the next week.

The situation will be reviewed again on April 8, and a decision on further curbs may be taken if the COVID-19 spread continues unchecked.

Meanwhile, 62 more people died from coronavirus in Punjab, while there were over 2,900 new cases in the last 24 hours.

With this, the infection tally rose to 2,57,057 while the total number of fatalities has reached 7,216 in the state.
