Income Tax Return filing deadline extended till December 31

New Delhi (NVI): The Income Tax Department has extended the income tax return (ITR) filing deadline for FY 2019-20 till December 31, 2020, for most individual taxpayers, from the earlier deadline of November 30, 2020.

The last date for assessees required to furnish audit reports on international or specified domestic transactions has also been extended to January 31, from November 30.

Furthermore, for individuals required to get their accounts audited, a new deadline of January 31 is applicable, instead of December 31.

The due dates have been extended in order to “provide more time to taxpayers for furnishing of income tax returns”, according to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the top policy-making body of the Income Tax Department.

The Income Tax Department acknowledged the “challenges faced by taxpayers in meeting the statutory and regulatory compliances due to the outbreak of COVID-19”.

In May, the government had extended the date for filing income tax returns for financial year 2019-20 to November 30, from July 31. It had also moved the last date to furnish various audit reports – including tax audit report – to October 31.

The Income Tax Department also extended the deadline for small taxpayers – – or those with a tax liability up to ₹ 1 lakh based on self-assessment – to January 31.

Srinagar (NVI): The meeting of “People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration” has started at PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti’s Gupkar residence in Srinagar and is aimed at evolving future strategy as to how the “fight for seeking Article 370 and pre August 19, 2019 position can be taken forward.”

The meeting is taking place a day after PDP chief said she will not hold the tri colour flag in her hands till the flag of erstwhile state of J&K is restored.

The top leaders who are participating in the meeting include Dr Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Sajad Gani Lone, M Y Tarigami, Omar Abdullah and Ravinder Rana.

Sources said that the conglomerate is likely to announce its chairman, vice-chairman, general secretary and others.

“Farooq Abdullah is likely to be announced as head of the group while PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and People’s Conference chairman Sajad Gani would be given important positions,” they said.

It is worthwhile to mention here that BJP and Apni Party are opposing Gupkar declaration.

Devendra Fadnavis tests Covid-19 positive

New Delhi (NVI): Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis today announced that he has tested positive for coronavirus.

Taking to Twitter, Fadnavis said, “I have been working every single day since the lockdown but now it seems that God wants me to stop for a while and take a break! I have tested COVID19 positive and in isolation. Taking all medication & treatment as per the advice of the doctors.”

In another tweet, the Minister said, “Those who have come in contact with me are advised to get Covid-19 tests done. Take care, everyone.!”

Earlier, several MLAs and Ministers from Uddhav Thackeray-led Cabinet were infected by the coronavirus. However, they got discharged after recovery.

Meanwhile, in worst affected Maharashtra coronavirus tally today increased to 16,32,544 with 7,347 new cases recorded in last 24 hours. The state reported 184 fatalities during the same period, taking the death toll to 43,015.

AstraZeneca resumes US vaccine trial, J&J to start next week

New Delhi (NVI): AstraZeneca Plc has resumed the US trial of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine after approval by regulators, and Johnson & Johnson is preparing to resume its trial on Monday or Tuesday, putting research into two of the leading candidates for a coronavirus inoculation back on track.

AstraZeneca, one of the leading vaccine developers, paused its US trial on September 6 after a report of a serious neurological illness, believed to be transverse myelitis, in a participant in the company’s UK trial.

AstraZeneca trials in the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa resumed last month even as the US Food and Drug Administration continued its investigation into the case. The vaccine is being developed along with researchers at Oxford University.

Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson paused its large, late-stage trial last week after a study participant became ill.

Both companies have contracts to provide vaccine to the United States and other governments if they are cleared by regulators.

The news signaled progress against the novel coronavirus that has infected more than 41 million globally, including 8 million Americans and comes 10 days before a US presidential election that may hinge on plans here to fight the pandemic.

PM Modi inaugurates 3 development projects in Gujarat

New Delhi (NVI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated three projects, including ‘Kisan Suryodaya Yojana’ for the farmers in Gujarat through video conferencing.

During the virtual inauguration, PM Modi launched Kisan Suryodaya Yojana, to provide day-time power supply for irrigation to farmers.

Under this scheme, farmers will be able to avail power supply from 5 am to 9 pm. The state government has allocated a budget of Rs 3,500 crores for installing transmission infrastructure under this scheme by 2023.

In addition to this, Prime Minister said, “I would like to congratulate the Gujarat government that this work is being done by preparing a completely new capacity of transmission, without affecting other systems.”

“Under this scheme, laying of about three and a half thousand circuit kilometers of new transmission lines will be done in the next 2-3 years,” he said adding that the scheme will also be implemented in more than a thousand villages in the coming days. More of these villages are in tribal dominated areas.

Apart from this, PM Modi also inaugurated a Paediatric Heart Hospital attached with the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Gujarat.

The institute is undergoing expansion at the cost of Rs 470 crores. After the completion of the expansion project, the number of beds will increase from 450 to 1,251.

It will also become the biggest single super speciality cardiac teaching institute in the country and one of the biggest single super speciality cardiac hospitals in the world.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister inaugurated Asia’s longest temple ropeway on mount Girnar. The 2,320 metre-long ropeway has a capacity to carry 1,000 passengers per hour. The project will initially have 25-30 cabins, with a capacity of 8 people per cabin.

It will cover a distance of 2.3 km in just 7.5 minutes through the ropeway. Moreover, the ropeway will also provide a scenic view of the lush green beauty surrounding the Girnar mountain.

After inaugurating the ropeway at Girnar, the Prime Minister said more and more devotees and tourists will now visit the destination.

“The rope-way started today is the fourth ropeway of Gujarat. To see Ambaji in Banaskantha, three more ropes in Pavagadh, Satpura – they are already working,” he added.

PM Modi further said, “Today Gujarat has got Suryodaya Yojana for its farmers, Girnar ropeway and a modern cardio hospital. In a way, they are symbols of power, devotion and health of Gujarat. I congratulate the people of Gujarat for all this.”

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and other ministers, officials joined the inauguration event through video conferencing.

India’s active COVID-19 cases below 7 lakh for second day

New Delhi (NVI): The active cases are less than 7 lakh for the second consecutive day in India and stand at 6,80,680. The active cases now comprise only 8.71 per cent of the total positive cases of the country, Union Health Ministry said.

India continues to report a trend of steadily declining active cases. This is a result of the successful TEST, TREAT, and TRACK strategy of the Union government implemented by the States and UTs, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

“The change in the active cases across the states and Union Territories has been varied, indicating different stages in their fight against the global pandemic,” it added.

Moreover, the declining trend of the active cases is complemented by the unbroken rising number of recovered cases. The total recovered cases have crossed the 70 lakh mark and stand at 70,16,046. With this, the national recovery rate has further improved to 89.78 per cent.

“A total of 67,549 coronavirus patients have recovered and discharged in a day while 53,370 new infections were reported during the same period,” it highlighted.

The ministry also said 61 per cent of the total recovered cases are from 6 States and UTs which includes Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

“Ten states and Union Territories observed concentrated 77 per cent of the new recovered cases in the country and Maharashtra has contributed the maximum with more than 13,000 single day recovery,” according to the health ministry data.

In the last 24 hours, 53,370 new confirmed cases were recorded, 80 per cent of which are from 10 States and UTs, the ministry said.

“Out of these, Kerala reported the maximum addition with more than 8,000 cases followed by Maharashtra with over 7,000 cases,” it added

So far, the total number of coronavirus cases in India has surged to 78,14,682. The death toll due to the contagion disease has increased to 1,17,956 with 650 new deaths.

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed the 78 lakh-mark and stands at 78,14,682 after 53,370 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,17,956 after 650 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

This is the second consecutive day when the active cases have remained below seven lakh. The recovery rate also further improved to 89.78 per cent in the country.

Low-intensity earthquake hits Himachal

New Delhi (NVI): An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 on the Richter scale struck Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district today, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

“Earthquake of Magnitude:3.2, Occurred on 24-10-2020, 10:34:29 IST, Lat: 31.35 & Long: 76.84, Depth: 7.0 Km ,Location: Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh,” the NCS tweeted.

However, there were no immediate reports of any loss of life or damage to any property due to the earthquake. Further details awaited.

Earlier yesterday, a moderate-intensity earthquake of magnitude 2.7 shook Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district.

The state is prone to earthquakes, light to moderate intensity quakes are regular as several parts of the hill-state fall under seismic zone five.

World Polio Day 2020: History, significance and theme

New Delhi (NVI): Polio is a highly contagious viral infectious disease that can lead to paralysis, breathing problem or even death, which has hampered the lives of millions of children across the world.

World Polio Day is observed on October 24 every year, to highlight the global efforts toward a polio-free world. Also, to mark the importance of polio vaccination and measures to eradicate it.

Established over a decade ago by Rotary International, World Polio Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.

Later, a resolution was adopted by the World Health Assembly in 1988 for the worldwide eradication of polio under which the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was launched.

Poliomyelitis, commonly known as Polio largely affects children under the age of five. It is transmitted through contaminated water or food, or contact with an infected person mainly through the faecal-oral route.

The poliovirus has three strains (type 1, type 2 and type 3), wild poliovirus type 2 was eradicated in 1999 and no further case of wild poliovirus type 3 has been found since it was last reported in Nigeria in November 2012. Both type 2 and type 3 strains have officially been declared as globally eradicated.

Every year Polio Day is celebrated with a theme and the purpose of the theme is different. This year the theme of the Polis Day is “Stories of Progress: Past and Present“. It has been specifically chosen to acknowledge the progress made in eradicating polis so far.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), polio cases have decreased by over 99 per cent since 1988, from an estimated 350,000 cases to 22 reported cases in 2017.

This drastic reduction is the result of the global effort to eradicate the disease. This year, only 3 countries in the world have reported the transmission of polio, which are Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

The day also celebrates progress and the people, volunteers, and local health workers, who make it possible by getting their own children vaccinated. It honours the people working to reach every last child until no child’s future is threatened by the impact of this disease.

Coronavirus cases exceed 42 million worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): More than 42 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll rises to 11,43,495, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.

Over 28.4 million patients have been cured and recovered from the deadly contagion globally.

In the US, the total number of coronavirus cases have reached more than 8.48 million while the total number of fatalities have surpassed 2,23,914 in the country.

Brazil registered 30,026 COVID-19 cases within past 24 hours and surpassed 5.35 million mark. The country’s death toll stands at 1,56,471.

France has recorded a total of 10,84,732 coronavirus cases, becoming the second European Union (EU) country passing the grim one-million mark after Spain.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Turkey has risen by 2,165 to 357,693 within the last 24 hours marking the largest daily increase since May 6, while the death toll in the country risen to 9,658.

South Africa recorded 1,897 new cases, bringing the nationwide number to 7,12,412. The country has the highest number of COVID-19 cases on the African continent and is the 12th most affected in the world after the UK, Mexico and Peru.

Argentina, the country of south America has decided to prolong its isolation and social distancing measures aimed at controlling the spread of the coronavirus until November 8, President Alberto Fernandez announced.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) called on countries around the world to take immediate action as several countries seeing an exponential increase in infections.
