Quebec stabbing: 2 dead, five injured in Canada, suspect held

New Delhi (NVI): At least two people have died after a man dressed in medieval clothes attacked people last night in the Canadian city of Quebec.

The man stabbed multiple victims with his knife. Two people have been declared dead, while at least five have been injured, according to the reports.

Quebec City Police Department (SPVQ) took to Twitter and asked people to remain indoors and be cautious till the suspect was not caught.

Reportedly, the attack took place around Parliament Hill area in the old Quebec neighbourhood.

The events seem to have occurred at different times of the evening in different sectors of Old Quebec. First reports of the incident came through shortly before 22:30 local time.

However, the suspect was finally located near Abraham-Martin Street in the Old Port. The police in Quebec City arrested the man and transported him to a hospital.

Taking to Twitter, the Police said, “Shortly before 1 am, the SPVQ (Quebec city police force) arrested a suspect, asking residents of the city to stay inside with the doors locked because an investigation is still ongoing.”

The suspect in his mid-20s was arrested near Espace 400e business-park in the Old Port.

Mild earthquake hits Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi (NVI): A mild intensity earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale hit Changlang district in Arunachal Pradesh today.

“The quake struck at 8.00 am at a depth of 10 km on latitude 27. 44 degree North and longitude 96.30 degree East with its epicentre at Changlang,” according to National Centre for Seismology.

However, no casualty or damage of property has been reported.

Earlier on October 9, an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale hit Tawang district of the state.

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed the 81 lakh-mark and stands at 81,84,083 after 46,964 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country’s death toll stands at 1,22,111 after 470 new fatalities were reported during the same period.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases increased to 16,78,406, followed by Karnataka with 8,23,412 cases, and Andhra Pradesh with 8,23,348 cases.

Under attack, France rejects Visas of Pakistanis

New Delhi (NVI): France has deported 118 Pakistani nationals while rejecting 183 Visitor Visas of Pakistanis, in a move seen as a retaliation for virulent attacks on French President Emmanuel Macron.

Giving out these details, Marseille-based Consulate General Of Pakistan said they are requesting France to allow Pakistanis temporary stay.

“183 visitor visa provided to our citizens has been found to be rejected by French authorities following the criticism by PM Imran khan. 118 citizen with proper documents were deported forcefully. We’re currently in touch with French authority to give our citizens temporary stay,” it tweeted.

“After cross-checking the list of deportees handed to us, we have found the name of Lt.Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha’s sister there. We’ve requested french authorities to provide her temporary stay as she wants to see her ailing mother-in-law, ” it added.

Pakistan, led by its Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been indulging in virulent attacks on Macron after he vouched for freedom of speech and denounced Islamist terrorism, which has been unleashed on France.

A number of attacks on French nationals have been witnessed in France lately by the Islamist radicals.

Coronavirus cases surge past 45.9 million worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): More than 45.9 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll is nearing 11,94,500, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.

Over 30. 2 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

In the US, the total number of coronavirus cases have reached more than 9.11 million. The total number of fatalities have surpassed 2,30,500 in the country.

Brazil remains number one COVID-19 affected country in Latin America with 5.53 million cases. The country’s death toll stands at 1,59,884.

France registered 35,641 new cases in a 24-hour span, raising the country’s total infections to nearly 1.37 million since the beginning of the pandemic.

Moreover, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced m England will enter a second national lockdown on Thursday as the UK has passed the grim milestone of 1 million coronavirus cases.

Austria will also go into a second national lockdown from November 2 till the end of the month to contain the spread of COVID-19. The total number of coronavirus cases in country stands at 104,925.

South Africa currently has the most COVID-19 cases in the African continent, which hit 7,25,452. The country also has the highest number of deaths related to COVID-19 at 19,230.

UK PM Boris Johnson declares month-long nationwide lockdown in England

New Delhi (NVI): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has again announced a month-long nationwide lockdown in England starting from November 5 till December 2, amid increasing cases of COVID-19 infection.

Johnson made the announcement in a virtual press conference from Downing Street, just hours after the United Kingdom’s coronavirus tally crossed one million-mark, according to the reports.

“From Thursday until the start of December you must stay at home, you may only leave home for specific reasons,” said Johnson, adding that, “Now is the time to take action because there is no alternative.”

Under the new restrictions, people will only be allowed to leave their homes for specific reasons, such as education, medical reasons, work or food and essential shopping, said Johnson.

Pubs, bars and restaurants will be closed across the country except for takeaways. Non-essential shops, hairdressers and leisure and entertainment venues will also be closed for four-weeks, he added.

However, during the lockdown, schools, colleges and universities will remain open, the prime minister said, adding that those who cannot work from home, such as construction or manufacturing workers, will be encouraged to continue going to their workplaces.

Moreover, different households will be banned from mixing, although support bubbles and childcare bubbles will remain in place. Also, gyms will be shut but people can continue to exercise outdoors, at most with one person from another household.

Johnson further said that after the lockdown ends on December 2, regions will go back to the tiered system.

“Christmas is going to be different this year, perhaps very different, but it’s my sincere hope and belief that by taking tough action now we can allow families across the country to be together,” he added.

Furthermore, the United Kingdom COVID-19 cases have surpassed one million and currently stands at 10,14,739 with more than 46,000 deaths.

COVID cases in India climb to over 81.8 lakh; death toll mounts to 1.22 lakh

New Delhi (NVI): The coronavirus cases in India saw a jump of 46,964 in the last 24 hours, raising the total number to 81,84,083, Union Health Ministry said.

The country’s death toll due to the virus rose to 1,22,111, with 470 new fatalities being reported in the past 24 hours.

So far, 74,91,513 patients have been cured an recovered all over the country and the active cases stands at 5,70,458.

This is for the third consecutive day when active COVID-19 cases in the country remained below the 6 lakh mark.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases increased to 16,78,406, followed by Karnataka with 8,23,412 cases, and Andhra Pradesh with 8,23,348 cases.

Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of fatalities at 43,911 followed by 11,168 in Karnataka and 11,122 in Tamil Nadu.

The other worst affected states are Tamil Nadu (7,24,522) Uttar Pradesh (4,81,868), Kerala (4,33,105) and Delhi (3,86,706).

The death toll in the national capital rose to 6,511, while 3,47,476 patients in Delhi have recovered so far, the healthy ministry data shows.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, a total 10,98,87,303 samples tested for COVID-19 up to October 31. Of these 10,91,239 samples were tested yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry said that the country witnessed a fall in daily COVID-19 numbers in the month of October. Also, its case fatality rate (CFR) has reached below 1.5 per cent and is continuously declining.

Tamil Nadu allows schools, colleges, cinema halls to reopen from Nov

New Delhi (NVI): Easing curbs further, Tamil Nadu government has allowed schools, colleges, cinemas, zoos and amusement parks to reopen from November.

Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami made an announcement to this effect after meeting with district collectors and health experts.

Schools, colleges, research and other educational institutions, and hostels would be allowed to open from November 16.

In regard with the schools, classes for standards 9-12 alone shall be conducted.

In addition to this, using upto 50 per cent seats, cinema theatres, multiplexes, zoos and amusement parks can resume functioning from November 10.

SOP should be followed, Palaniswami said adding the relaxations are not applicable to containment zones.

However, swimming pools, beaches and tourist places would continue to be out of bounds for people.

Greek PM declares month-long partial lockdown as COVID cases spike

New Delhi (NVI): Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis today declared a one-month partial coronavirus lockdown, shutting down restaurants and other leisure activities in Athens and other major cities.

The partial lockdown will come into force on November 3 and will last for a month, Mitsotakis said in a televised address.

Under the new measure, local areas will be categorised as either Surveillance or High Risk zones.

In Surveillance zones, a curfew will be implemented from midnight to 05:00 CET. Mask wearing will be required everywhere, both indoors and outdoors, higher education is to be conducted remotely and gatherings are prohibited.

In High Risk zones, the same measures will apply but all hospitality businesses, as well as theatres, museums, cinemas and indoor gyms, will also be asked to close their doors to the public.’

However, Mitsotakis stressed that contrary to the lockdown implemented in the spring, “we are not talking about a total freeze of everyday life, as shops and schools will remain open.”

The country of 10.7 million has so far recorded 35,510 COVID cases and 615 deaths, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Greece’s announcement comes after national lockdowns have once more been introduced in France and Belgium, while Germany has also opted for a partial lockdown.

Slovakia to test all citizens over age of 10 for coronavirus

New Delhi (NVI): Slovakia today began a programme to screen all its citizens, above the age of 10, for coronavirus with antigen tests in what would be a global first.

Some 45,000 medical workers, Army and police are being deployed to carry out the tests in the EU member state of 5.4 million people, collecting swabs at around 5,000 testing points, according to media reports.

Results will be given within roughly half an hour of a sample being taken.

People who test positive will have the option of quarantining for 10 days at home or moving into a facility provided by the government.

Those not willing to take the antigen test will have to self-isolate for 10 days or face a €1,650 (£1,485) fine.

Everyone tested will receive a certificate, and police will conduct spot checks to find anyone seeking to avoid the process.

The number of infections has risen steeply since the end of the summer, after the country came through the first wave of the disease in the spring relatively unscathed.

Notably, Slovakia would be the first country of its size to undergo nationwide testing, although mass testing has taken place in entire Chinese cities.

Furthermore, smaller European states such as Luxembourg and Monaco have also announced mass testing programmes.

So far, the country has reported a total of 55,091 cases of coronavirus. The death toll currently stands at 212.
