Islamabad, June 4: The Pakistan government is mulling restoring the six-day work week and abolishing the Saturday off-day after a formal approval is granted by the Cabinet.

The Cabinet Division has sought recommendations on the matter from all ministries, which would be referred to the federal cabinet for a final decision, as the five-day work week has led to low productivity in government offices and was not delivering the expected results.

Earlier, the country’s federal cabinet had approved two-day weekly holidays in the government offices in 2022 as part of an energy conservation plan as the country is still facing a severe energy crisis which usually spikes during the summer season.

The Cabinet Division will now deliberate on the issue of scrapping the current five-day work week after the Eid ul Adha holidays.

The previous Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government had given the go-ahead to restore weekly off on Saturday in government offices as part of its energy conservation plan amid a massive energy crisis, following protests by government employees against its earlier decision to restore a six-day work week which was taken in May 2022.
